On today's episode of Change Agents, an IRONCLAD Original, Andy Stumpfs sits down with Jimmy Hatch.
Jimmy Hatch is a retired member of the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, and is the founder of Spike's K9 Fund. Jimmy was critically wounded during his final combat deployment while searching for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. He credits a K9 named Remco with saving his life and the lives of several others during the firefight with Taliban fighters, though Remco was killed in the battle.
His organization Spike’s K9 Fund provides custom-fit ballistic vests, protective equipment, and medical cost assistance to working K9s.

Jimmy is by far one of the best interviews I have ever listened too... personable, funny, brutally raw and honest. And SO fucking passionate about his new mission.
After the retelling of stories so many times, I've seen most get retold and filtered into the cliche, "so there i was. the ultimate badass...". Not with Jimmy. His telling of the night he was shot was as self deprecating and honest as I have ever heard.
His honesty about his darkest moment and the heart wrenching experience of feeling his dog getting colder while cradling him during the ride out was so impactful. His ability to repurpose himself and find a new priority to have succeed is inspirational.

I have been around cadaver dogs and arson dogs as well as some K9 units, and they're all amazing. The cadaver dogs are amazing as they led us to the exact spot of the person we were looking for, and within 15' of the person under water, which was recovered 10' under the surface. I have friends that train service dogs for veterans, and those dogs are awesome as well!!

I hope you do a follow up with Jimmy. His book is amazing. I would love to hear more on his transition from warrior to Yale Student. Especially now that he has been there a number of years.

Im a huge dog lover, and have a huge amount of respect for both these special working dogs and the men they serve around and it absolutely boggles my mind how many ignorant idiots are in positions of power that refuse to give those dogs the bare minimum support because theyre clueless (and spineless) about how valuable they really are. I love to see more and more stuff getting out about how incredible these animals are, so they can get the support they deserve....not to mention the men and women they serve to protect, who certainly deserve more support as well. If I could go back in time and have listened to my Dad (who was an e-5 corpsman in the Navy) when he wanted me to go to the Naval Academy for school, I would...because I wish I would have so that I could have served as a handler, nothing sounds better to me than being able to serve with a special dog as your best buddy everyday.

My family owned a marina growing up. One summer, a girl got ran over while skiing and the prop severed her arm. The cadaver dog found her arm in 20 to 30 ft of water many hours later. Wild stuff. The girl did live btw

I just had an idea about using dogs for schools to help prevent active shooters I know a lot of people have issues with arms Guard's for schools but I believe that an officer and a dog would at least be a start

"Andy did you scream when you got shot?" -- "No. No, I'm more of a man than you." This is how brothers treat each other. Total admiration of each other's capabilities, but also totally relentless when it comes time to give each other shit. I wish more women understood this about men.

I am sorry, I see bad police miss use dogs and it’s made me resentful. Using dogs to violate people’s rights its hard to see how that makes are country safer.
Thanks for your sacrifice and working for a better world.

      Sorry you feel that way.
After 32 years in LE however, I have to disagree.
Of course there are bad Cops, but the rest of us can't quit over it. As a member of my Sheriffs Office Special Services, (SWAT/Bloodhounds), for many years, I have to wonder how many "police incidents" you've been involved in?... It's a nasty world on the streets of America, not just in foreign wars. And I've done both.
      The world we live in.
