I'm from Ontario. Half Irish in heritage. I search RUclips for old time Appellation music, and Acadian music. This is without a sliver of a doubt the cleanest , truest , best old time music I have ever heard picked and sung in my life. Anyone that likes old time music should hear this. Those who have never heard old time hill music should have this as an introduction to it. Thank you , that was privilege to listen to.
Keep those old songs alive Mr. Hicks. We need more people like you and Matt Kinman, who are not letting the old classics be forgotten. Thanks for all you do.
Love love your music man, a heck of a lot better than the crap I hear on the radios these days that's for darn sure. In a hypothetical way imagine if you lived during the 30s, 40s, and so on and released your music, it would be played country wide on the grand ole opry station and they would all be huge hits. Crazy to think how the times and ppls taste in music have changed, it's a crying shame.
Commie Tipton, a banjer picker from Townsend, TN. once played for me a tune called Bill Carbon. Not having a recorder I didn't get it. I can't seem to find anyone who knows this tune. Are there any banjer pickers out there who know this tune?
I believe he is using triple C, g-C-G-C-C (5th thru 1st); albeit tuned down 2 half-steps to f-A#-F-A#-A#. Then all of the fret work and main melody notes are found on 3rd string open, 3rd string 3rd fret, 2nd string open, 2nd string 2nd fret, 3rd string second fret, and first string 5th fret.

Slightly different version than i'm familiar with, likely a result of it being sung on the high seas and altered through spoken history.
Awesome, when does the CD come out?
Great song and well played! What tuning is this played in?

ChampionofNorthHuron Whoops! That note saying "first string 5th fret" should have said 4th string 5th fret.
Shane, if I recall correctly, the tuning is GCGCD, pkayed somewhere out of the third fret so it sounds weird and Old Englishy.
clifton what kinda banjo is that?
Weymann "Keystone" model, circa 1900.
Do you have a Facebook?
Who made your banjer?
