Glad to see the use of this tool in action. I may use the tool for some tricky or confusing spatial relationships when drawing, which I do freehand. Thank you.
Thank you so much Jason for this tutorial, full of great advice and encouragement. Can't wait to try this!
OH MY GOSH!!! This is genius! How did I not know about these before?
:) I'm going to have to block you from my tips - your too darn good as it is :)
Jason Morgan - Wildlife Art HAHAHA!! NOOO! You're where I learn all the best stuff!
Lachri Fine Art You and Jason sound like a "team" commenting and praising each others tips ;) Your secrets are safe with me though ;)
sniperwipers haha I'm genuinely excited about this, I can't wait to show my students. What I can't figure out is how I didn't know about these tools before. I always used a scratch piece of paper and made hundreds of marks on it as I worked. This will be so much better!
Lachri Fine Art These have been around for years :) I used to mark a piece of paper too lol now i just eyeball it :)
Jason Morgan is my favorite artist. I love everything about him and appreciate that he shares his talent with everyone. His instruction is always clear and encouraging and his work is so beaitiful.
I did my very first freehand portrait sketch from a BnW photo of Vincent Van Gogh today. I gave myself permission, since I did ok, to afford the divider I have been looking at for 4 months. I feel very ready. Thanks for this video. I am not a wildlife artist, but you have offered me a good bit of valuable info regardless! Thank you! It's not cheating! On the contrary! It is a tool that teaches! I deserve it because of a good first go on my own! They have been in use for centuries! YES!
The best of luck to you. Try to avoid too much self satisfaction. I don't mean to discourage, but by a little bit of criticism you can keep improving. All great Artists, Like Van Gogh were always dissatisfied : they strived for perfection. My high school mistress uses to say: "Good, better, best- never let it rest, until the good is better, and the better, best. Enjoy your new dividers!
We're can you buy this and how, much does it cost
This was my first ever lesson with Jason. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
Thanks for covering this. I mostly draw freehand but something like this could help tremendously with difficult scaling once in awhile. Just subscribed and enjoy your work.
If you don't want to change the size, then a common compass works better for this job, because you both take measurements and can use the graphite on the compass, to transfer the measurement you took, by marking your drawing with it!
Perfect! All in all, it is everything about coordinates on a plan.
Exactly.
Thank you for taking the time in demonstrating how to use the proportional divider. It was very helpful.
This tool is the missing link I've been looking for, thank you, my friend!
Thank you so much for this. In the past, I've made a grid on my canvas--but that tends to take a while... I will definitely be ordering one of these!
This is such a useful tool. I purchased one on amazon months ago. Hiwever, I was unsure how to use ot. So it's been in my art box collecting dust. Lol Thanks so much for showing me how to use this. I can't wait to try this tonight. It's amazing how simple it is to just "connect the dots".
Excellent instructions. I got myself the Derwent set and was looking for a sharper pointed one, when I ran into your instruction vudeo. Based upon your advice I definitely getting me a sharp pointed one, as the Derwent seems to be in the way a lot 👍🏻😀
I have the exact same divider and couldn't find anywhere how to use it. This was brilliant! Thank you so much!
my pleasure - glad you found it of use :) www.jasonmorgan.co.uk/
Brilliant have always used the end of my pencil and have never seen this device before will certainly see if I can source it in UK many thanks for all your help Jason you're a star!!
Super helpful. Thank you for doing a long version and not just a quick few points.
Wow! I have exactly the same tool as the smaller one you showed - the brand is Pixiss. It's really robust, it fell and the little points just stuck straight into the carpet!
My only comment is that I wish it had the proportions printed on the unit. It came with a sheet explaining that different holes are different proportions, from 5/1 down to 1/1. I think it would be handy to have them on the unit.
Oh, it also came in a set with a grid, greyscale tester and colour wheel - I'd be interested to see you do videos on these, too.
yeah...i'm buying some this week. I draw well enough, but this will speed things along more accurately. Thanks for sharing Jason
I've just ordered the Accurasee proportional dividers, but they'll take over a month to come from the US to the UK. I don't think I would measure as many points as you're doing, maybe just a few vital ones.
Such great instructions, I remember this from way back in high school. So glad to re-learn something. Also what's great is I have a granddaughter that loves drawing also, well actually I have 5 out of my 7 that love it. I see the one I mentioned every week day tho, so I'm excited to help her get her proportions correct also. I'm compilimg a list for all of my grand girls for Christmas & this will defiantly be on it. Thank you again, your a marvelous instructor!
The new full length drawing video is ready for you to all watch on RUclips (FREE) hope you find it useful :) ruclips.net/video/lV7lbMghrs0/видео.html
It's fascinating watching you work.
I know in Britain they have reintroduced the beaver and the otter, but I never thought they'd go so far as to reintroduce the rhino into the south welsh valleys. Useful video. Thanks!
Your video’s are the most helpful ones I’ve seen for beginners, thank you :)
What an amazing tool! Didn't even know this existed. Thank you so very much
This is such a great video Jason thankyou! Like you say its so easy for our eyes to be tricked and a gadget like this is a great way of getting proportions right. I dont think its cheating, and if it's good enough for the great masters then its good enough for me! Lol
I get miffed by those finger - wagging purists who say its cheating... when you look at the stuff they do quite often they could do with a little tutorial like this! So thanks Jason for another cracking tutorial!
( I've been using my kids old school compass but maybe I will order the one you are using. Good bit of kit!👍
Glad I discovered you today. Thank-you for sharing this information, as it is very helpful, indeed.
Superb!
Thanks for this video and many greetings from Brazil! 🇧🇷
Gr8 video, I've been trying to use the 'accurasee' divider using the traditional straight arm method, without much success ... duh! As a drawing newbie this method will be really useful to help train my eye/hand co-ordination & build confidence. Thxs heaps for gr8 vid.
Faith Ellis glad you found it of use :)
Jason Morgan - Wildlife Art Is there a trick to holding the divider, any particular angle etc? Each time I check my measurements they're different and I'm not sure why.
Faith Ellis not really, just make sure its tight enough and held in place.
Great tips, I use the proportional divider along with a chart for more complicated portraits. Just getting back into drawing after having put it aside for far too many years. I'm loving colored pencil work (with Faber Castell) at the moment, but have recently seen some of the white on black medium that i am looking very forward to trying at some point soon. Still going through all of your RUclips video's.....I'm definitely a fan :)
Awesome tutorial! Thank you for sharing.
Good demonstration. I appreciate all your tutorials. Thanks! Judi
Thank you so much Jason for this excellent tutorial. It is such a useful tool and I am so pleased I bought one:)
Isn't this a very long process next to using a projector? What are the situations when we would need to use this instead of a light box or projector? Forgive my ignorance. Yeah, I'm buying one on your suggestion because you're the genius!
Leah Allen the proportional divider can be used when working from life, which you cannot used a projector or light box for.
What a great idea. Thank you so much. May I ask what kind of mechanical pencil you use? Size?
Hi Jason this is very insightful, I'd like to see a video in how to transfer a drawing into canvas. Cheers.
Thanks so much for that! Very helpful. At last I know how to use these things and they will be a big help in my drawing.
You are an amazing artist and instructor
Excellent demo
Thank you soo much! Great tool!
This is great! I came across this video while trying to learn more about a Fibonacci Gauge, which I hadn't heard of until recently. Now I think I will also be learning more about and using a Proportional Divider. Jason, do you have any experience with a Fibonacci Gauge?
Wow thanks . Ordered mine 😁
This is great i need something to scale images from the iphone to any size paper.. not tracing but a way to help me scale
I've been wondering what a proportional divider was and how it is used. Thank you.
ordered this due to your demonstration.. thanks!
Thanks for this wonderful video.
I really enjoyed this video and I think I will be drawing better now. Pat Napper
Very helpful to get exact size of points or a rough closeness
Thank for share this video i watch it to the end and lean a hole lot thank you Jason Morgan.
Very clever. I like this.
thanks Jason for this tutorial now i can use my derwent tool :) really helpful tutorial !
awesome tool... but very fragile. I open the package and left it on my table as I prepare my paper and material. accidentally knocked it down tips broke off. bummer!
Thanks Jason, I ordered it!!
this is the best tip ever!
Thanks for sharing Jason
Can you use the tool to make the hippo much bigger?
Thank you for tutorial !
I find a centre point on the image and it is much easier to measure everything out from there, especially to enlarge the image.
Look again there is marked dots on image
He seems to utilize division of thirds of the target to keep reference
Thank you so much!! This was an awesome tutorial!!
How do you decide where to move the red part that controls the holes on the divider that in turn widen or narrow the pointed ends.
Olynda Walker on the dividers the hole at the top is one to one ratio. Each of the other holes let you reduce or enlarge. They are usually marked as to how much the change the ratio
good info. easy to understand
I have had. One and was not using it correctly. Thank you!!
Great video. LOVE your Welsh sing-song accent, God bless. Very close, but you could have come even closer by going INSIDE to work volumes. For example, the left hind leg on the animal itself is more rumpus- some thing like a French "ballon" wine glass. Yours is more elongated- more like a tall Champagne flute. In which case, all I can say is Cheers! Thanks for posting.
whats the diffirence between this method and copying exactly. you wont bother measuring if you start copying at the first place
I love to paint and DO NOT like to draw. This is great, Thanks for sharing. 🤗
Jason, where can I buy a pair of the Acurasee dividers in th UK?
I’ve tried to buy them from the US and they want a fortune for shipping and handling.
Why are they so expensive anyway? They’re only plastic.
Lawrence Fairbairn sorry no idea.
great tool for see proportions....nice
Thanks for this. I have the same dividers.
I have ordered one I didn’t even know they existed, I’ve been drawing freehand all my life but often run out of paper because of not getting the proportions correct.
INCREDIBLE FOR DRAWING
This is awesome thanks for the video
exelent teacher great lesson
Could you go over the other dividee mibe is metal and has circles lines abd on the other side says planes solids. Just got it. And how to use the scales
Would you say you prefer this method over gridding? If so why or why not?
Myself I think this is superior to gridding. First of all you don't have to draw the grid (or 2 grids if you dont use photoshop). No worrying about erasing the grid if it is still showing. And when you draw a square on a grid if the piece isnt that large it is hard to see where to place a line and it makes a huge difference. And if you make a mistake in measurements on a grid the whole thing goes arseways
I want one ASAP going to look on the net tomorrow. :)
Have you use a ruler to enlarge and down seize images its popular in op
Jason I live in Sweden. Do you think They have the proportional divider available here. If not where can I order and How much is it. Thank you for The nice tutorials.☺
+Cecil Tan I am getting some more shipped over from USA right now :)
thank you for this, could you choose an easier subject for a beginner like me! thanks
I wonder if this will work on portraiture. I'm dreadful at that.
is it available for international shipping? Im from Italy..
the best drawing tool ever made
goes back to ancient Greece.
would like to see one scaled up to a large size from the small photo like up to a A3
Thanks Jason, now i know where i went wrong, and i allowed my eyes to overrule my brain, and i have no idea where my hands came into the story.
Can you do a video on how to measure proportion using a pencil?
hi, what about when the picture is one size and i want to draw it in a large image or big pice of paper? what should i do?
Denia Massetti you set the pivot point farther down and you’ll enlarge the measurement. Measure the source image with the small side and then place your reference marks based on the large side of the divider
thank you sooo much found a friend in art
Thanks for posting. ✌️
Jason, do you know if I can by this on line her in Europe ? I live in Italy, can't find it on amazon. Do have the Derwent version, but it's not accurate on small works, as you point out.
An other good video, admire your work!
make one out of hard cardboard yourself cheaper still good
Use old plasric rulers!
Thank you for your demonstration HOW TO DRAW A RHINO
Are those points strong or will they break on fist fall?
There are some made with metal if you're concerned about the durability.
Thanks so much
Thanks!
Pat
With same size you dont need proportional divider, just ordinary divider.
Great video
Thanks, this is great!
Why can't we get this tool in the UK ,
For Under £12,
Just purchased that device why haven't I discovered this before!!???
it's a great tool to have acurase is very affordable.
Would this work on an actual rhino?
HI Frank, not sure what you mean ?
Just an amusing idea. A very large divider being held up to a Rhino...but being very careful not to poke it! Might make a good cartoon?
Frank Blangeard ha I'll let you try it 1st
Frank Blangeard yeah if ya wanna get close enuf to there butt!!
yes, you can use it to measure anything in life, also. Mine came today with simple instructions for how to do so-unless you were joking.
