- So this is why I haven't uploaded a video to RUclips since December! First off I was finishing my MZed course then this monster swallowed up all my time!
"Review of the Sony PXW- FX9: The Movie"? What sort of nonsense title is that? Well, it is almost two hours long which is over double the length of my previous longest review, but does it justify such a crazy length? Well, you can be the judge of that. I cover a huge amount of stuff and It also acts as a tutorial at times as I show you how to get the best out of the camera.
As always it is packed with silliness, great music, lots of information and opinion. It also has a narrative that makes the whole thing flow that you won't realise the time passing!

There are a smattering of strange encoding issues in certain bits where it looks glitchy. I don't know why. Please try and ignore it. I will try and get RUclips to replace it but I doubt they will and I don't want to re-upload it just to see the same thing.
This was recorded with different cameras at different times but not shown within the review in a linear way due to the structure, as in you see 0.5 (pre-release) firmware footage then 1.0 (release) firmware footage then back to 0.5 firmware footage. It's just how it had to be structured. It won't confuse you, it was just necessary due to the way this review morphed from being a much shorter pre-release review based on having it for just 2 weeks then having to change plans when the release camera came out at the same time I gave the loan pre-release camera back! I had to get a production version of the camera to then make the review work. It worked out for the best as I really got to know the second camera I used in this review.
I just wanted to point it out for one main reason and it is this; whenever you see stuff saying 1.0 firmware then the stuff you are seeing should be better mainly due to me knowing the camera much better due to having had much more time with it. For example, the introductory on-camera stuff of me in my edit suite (filmed in February with 1.0) has smoother bokeh change in the background when I move compared to my sum up in Richmond (filmed in November with 0.5) at the end despite being the same lens and f-stop. This is because I knew the settings to get smooth and consistent focus change even when really shallow and close to the lens.
I spent so much time learning the autofocus during the making of this review. It's not a case of turn it on and everything is perfect. It takes skill and practice! Slower speed and not using lock-on mode, but instead a slow sensitivity yields much nice results. Lock-on sensitivity on talking heads can be too sensitive to any slight movement which causes bokeh to change too much which can be distracting.
Oh and of course RUclips has killed the image with compression. I will make some untouched footage available to download in my blog post.
Brotha This is what I love and hate about my sony cameras they look like Green screen when not if you're at 1.8 2.8 3.5 aperture with auto focus. so crazy clients don't like sometimes. Go to 5.6 or 6.3 works more natural

@@philipbloom I think he is talking about the depth of field pop effect when the lenses are wide open looking unnatural or the blurry backgrounds looking so blurry it looks totally separate from the person so it looks like they were shot on a green screen background that was replaced.

They just closed Poland today, like everything, took back control of borders, closed schools, restaurants, pubs, malls! No foreigners allowed, even Poles coming back into the country are under a 14 day quarantine. I was about to turn on Netflix, but I'm guessing this will be much better. Thank You Philip for all the time you put in this film, waiting for my popcorn to pop now 🔥

At the beginning of this film, Philip explains his intention was to make not just a review but something that would be engaging for anybody, even some not interested in the FX9. Ok ,I do have interest in cameras and film but in no way is the FX9 a camera I would remotely think of buying. True to his word this really opened my eyes to the art of filmmaking. To me, is a great example of what separates a professional with someone who one day decided they are going to be a contest creator. The understanding of the weeks invested in producing this film is pretty much unfathomable for me. It allows me to switch off and enjoy what I'm seeing before my eyes. Anyone can record some footage but creating something of this depth, leaves me wondering how long do you need to practicing the craft of filming making to achieve this level of professionalism. The most amazing part, is it's for free.

Phillip, something I wanted to tell you, I have a Bachelor's and Master's in Art (I am a painter) so I see the world of film through the eyes of an artist by training (also a Master's in Media Communication) and IMHO your work is simply not just good videography (which it is!) but your work is moving works of Art, in one sense I would say it's "painterly", in the sense that I see that your filming as an Artist (your composition, lighting, etc) they are not clinical, cold, and technical, but visually rich like a well done painting. That, Phillip, is why some many people, especially in this field, are drawn to your work. You paint with film! So much so that people have described others' work as Phillip Bloom-esque!! keep up the great work, you are an inspiration to the rest of us. Blessings!

Phil Bloom’s desperate love sonnet to the Sony PXW-FX9. Story captures the journey of solitary DP on a quest to answer the eternal question: “Can you ever truly LOVE a camera - especially if the camera doesn’t love you back?”
Losing his mind and senses along the way, the hero arcs his character with a tremendous supporting cast - I mean cats. So moved, I felt the need to watch some scenes twice (it might have been I was having trouble understanding his accent). And the lighting - my god - he used LIGHTS!!!! Lots of them - some with COLOR!!! And the Bokeh! Superb!!! Bokeh-licious!!! Not a rotten tomato to be scene anywhere in this post modern Rom-Com adventure. The perfect antidote for the socially distanced in all of us. I tip my hat, sir. Well done!
I have a short attention span, I know nothing of video cameras, I'd never heard of the FX9 and this damn review lasted nigh on 2 hours. Yet...I found myself captivated, yes some of the terminology went over my head, I found myself frantically googling S-cinetone etc, but the imagery, the delivery and indeed, the story, I was enthralled. The best thing I've seen on RUclips. Bravo

To be honest I watched first 15 minutes and then I gave up because is a long video and require a lot of attention, but I came back after 4 days because I realized the amount of time, energy and passion you put in those videos. I adore your videos, your music choice and you are such a great inspiration for lots of people! This camera is very capable pro videocamera, made for pro people. Just finished watching from beginning to end. Thank you for making this movie! I’ve been highly interested in purchasing this camera. I switched from Canon DSLR’s to Sony mirrorless camera’s about 3 years ago because of watching your videos. I recently bought the FS5 mk II for my company but have been eyeing the FX9 since it started shipping. Thank you for all of the hard work you put into making this movie. 🙏🏼
Philip, capturing the ordinary and the commonplace like you have done to demonstrate here is of great value. Its nice to get the glossy commercial shots but I would hope others will be inspired to capture the natural world of humans like you have here.

I have zero chance of owing or even having the need to use an FX9, but that doesn’t matter as I watched this video because it’s 2-hours of Philip and his masterpiece way of creating a story within a review. Dear Philip, I‘ve been waiting for this film quite A while... and finally..... bravo, hats of!!!!! You excelled my expectations! Thank you so much! Funny coincident, Your Review and my own fx9 came on the same day. Waited for both quite a while. Despite the fact, that I have to take care of my kids now, as all schools are closed, I could be having a lot of time to get to know the fx9, because all my jobs have been canceled or prosponed for the next weeks. 😩 but I will use that time to spend more money I guess. You made me want the sigma 105. by the way I just bought the sigma art 24-70 emount lens. Works also great with AF and gives me a nice zoom for documentary work with the beautiful shallow depth of field of 2.8 on a full frame sensor. The focus by wire is ok, the close focus on the wide end is gorgeous and the best: it is parfocal. Definitely a recommendation used either fx9.
Well, I wish you and all other freelancers to stay healthy and that production brake in our business will end quite soon.

That autofocus is game-changing! Thanks for the monster review. This is the ultimate camera where the image overwhelms the specs. I truely hope Sony brings this Venice colour-science through to all their new cameras - so much better than their previous colour-science.

Many thanks for the time and love you put into this Phillip, a top notch review. Iam lucky enough to own a FX9 and have still yet to master using the camera handheld coming from using a DSLR so iam interested in a quick workflow on how to use catalyst but the tip on having dedicated buttons between high and low ISO base rates is a great idea. Still so much to learn to get the best out of the camera but the night time footage you got of Richmond at night was just magical and makes me want to visit The White Cross next time iam in the UK. I will be definity be experimenting more with both Slog 3 and S-cinetone combined with white balance as i have yet to master this and am a big fan of gorgeous colours. Thanks again and please ignore the negative comments as they obviously have too much time on thier hands. You are a true master led by your passion for filmaking. :)

Such an impressive work Philip ! When I saw few years ago your review of the Digital Bolex, and that one of the FS7, I never thought you could do even better work. That review was very informative for someone like me who has always shared your love for Sony cameras. I am so impressed by the beauty of the cinetone curve, and your autofocus tests were informative ! They will definitely save me a lot of time when I will rent that camera. I don't like how Native E Mount glass responds when it comes to manual focusing, but that autofocus function will make them work great. So happy about that, until now I was only using my A7RII for interviews because of this !

Amazing stuff. I have to say I do like the colour science on this camera even more so than the FS7 which is saying something. Glad to see that you've got over the back issue that was troubling you too! Keep on rocking!
I’m a year late, but I recently bought an old Sony DSR390 off eBay and have become kind of obsessed with the ENG form factor. This camera has some similarities to that and it’s interesting to hear your perspective specifically since you’ve worked with ENG cameras so much (love those old photos 😁).
Though I do not have the budget for this camera yet, I still watch, I've always enjoyed Philip Bloom video, be it review or documentary. He is one of my favourite that I follow. Its the way he tells the story without being too fanciful and showy, always using gears and tools necessary to enhance the story, down to earth and his willingness to share, his love for cats is a bonus as I have a rescued cat and share the same sentiments. Thumbs up Philip, great job and great content as always !

Marvellous Philip. A wonder to watch from start to finish. I hope Canon will send one of their C500MKII to test. Hopefully Wex (where I work), will get one of these in as a demo unit as it would be a pleasure to have a go on it, even if it is just in the shop floor. Hope your happy with your new purchase.

This was amazing, Philip. Amazing. I can only imagine how exhausted you are after this review but I have to be honest and say I hope your future reviews at least tickle the runtime of this one. Not only is this the definitive review of this camera, but also a 2 hour long movie that I greatly enjoyed. I am a bit of a camera nerd so I may be a skosh biased there. Fingers crossed we get more like this, good sir. Well done.

I'm so glad you left in all those parts where things went different then wanted. Like the autofocus and the talk about lenses when the shop window lights went off. All those tiny things made is really fun to watch and keep watching even though I have nothing with camera's
Ps what is that happening in the overcloud shots. It's as if the clouds are added in post, they seem to be moving or so?

I just finished the film on my other account (my partners) and I can’t thank you enough! I love the fact that you run these cameras hard through their full paces. I’m shopping hard for my next camera system and this helped me immensely. I nearly rented a FX9 for a job before watching this and I’m glad I went with the BMPCC 6k (it was a stock footage job). But as for a camera system I will own this gave me a real perspective on what and how I need to analyze. Thanks mucho Philip!!
