    As someone re-watching this series in 2019 it's mind bending how relevant it is to the current state of affairs. This is a testimony to a well designed educational program but also to our inability to learn from the past and further driving the point home that many of us are stuck in cycles and ideologies that haven't evolved or changed since like the civil war. :::Slams head on desk:::

      It's honestly mind-blowing how well you can follow the thread to how we got where we are today just from this selection of US history. This narrative has been developing for 100's of years. And it really seems like it's coming to it's climax now, except for the fact that it's almost always seemed like it's coming to a climax. All I can say for sure is that the US is and always has been the strangest country in the world.

    In the latest episode of CrashCourse US History, John Green looks at some very recent history including Obama's election, some of his policies like the Affordable Care Act, the 2009 stimulus, and the continuation of the war on terror. If you still can't reconcile a history course teaching such recent stuff, just think of this one as a current events episode.

    • @Tobias-fe2hm
      @Tobias-fe2hm 6 лет назад +6

      @@uselessspectator9427 facts have no bias, the facts presented, known and those which you pay attention to make bias

    • @uselessspectator9427
      @uselessspectator9427 5 лет назад +9

      How did you select those facts, though?
      For example, let's say there's some form of war won. When recounting we can report how much the war costs in terms of dollars, we can recount how many lives lost, we can report how many lives saved. There's many, many objective facts. That doesn't mean there's no bias. I can focus on all the negatives or the positives to create a bias.
      Even if I show facts from 'all sides' I'm still discriminating between that I see as 'important information' and 'not important'. That is why bias will always exist. Saying something has no bias generally just indicates you agree or don't know enough context to realise what's left out etc.
      In relation to the creation of texts bias will always exist.

    In 2014, the US economy grew by roughly 2.6% while inflation was at -0.1%. Additionally, unemployment dropped below 6% for the first time since before the 2008 Recession. The federal deficit is currently experiencing a significant decline and is predicted to continue this decline for this year and the next year. Both the military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have officially ended and we haven't gotten into any other large scale conflicts since 2008. We are currently engaging in official diplomatic meetings with Iran and Cuba for the first time since the Carter and Kennedy Administrations respectively. To top it all off, in 2011, US Special Forces managed to finally kill the most notorious terrorist in history, Osama Bin Laden. All this took place during the Obama Administration.
    This is a Republicans idea of "destroying the country".

    • @samuelandrychowski1769
      @samuelandrychowski1769 9 лет назад +3

      ***** you mean the figure including underemployment? Is that what you're taking about? As far as I know, it's so me where around 11-12%. But that's not the figure I'm taking about. I'm taking about the basic unemployment rate.

    • @kingjonstarkgeryan8573
      @kingjonstarkgeryan8573 9 лет назад +9

      Pulling out of Iraqi caused Isis to rise, the reason the economy grew because Obama's anti-gun rhetoric scared gm owners causing them to buy more guns and ammo. Gun groups joke about Obama being the best gun salesman of all time because when people are afraid of losing they buy more of it. It was Bush who set the op to kill Osma.

    • @fahs
      @fahs 9 лет назад +16

      Where are you getting these numbers from? We are in a deflationary economic crises? These would be counter to every bit of literature on the economy out there. Have you been to a grocery store lately? As far as unemployment, you are referring to the U3 number, which is manipulated by the person giving the statistic. If you want to know what the REAL unemployment number is, look at the U6, which the bureau of labor statistics recently said was just over 19%. You really think the fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq have ended? HA HA HA HA HA!!! You cannot be serious. Diplomatic relations with Iran? Yes we are doing that and allowing them to build a nuke while we are at it. You must be on the payroll of MSNBC.

    • @samuelandrychowski1769
      @samuelandrychowski1769 9 лет назад +20

      fahs I got my statistics from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. I'm assuming you're referencing the underemployment rate. I already addressed this in a previous response but your were obviously too ignorant to read through the previous comments to realize that. The underemployment rate isn't the "real" unemployment rate. It's a different statistic measuring a different economic phenomenon. If I wanted to use underemployment I would've used it, not just the base unemployment rate. And I understand the fighting in Southwest Asia isn't over, but large scale American ground campaigns where hundreds and thousands of our soldiers get killed and wounded are, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. And we're not allowing Iran to make a nuclear weapon. It would be worse to isolate Iran like we were doing before because then we would be pushing them to acquire the materials to create a nuclear weapon. By maintaining diplomatic relations with them and trying to strike a deal, rather than just antagonizing them, we are making real progress to reduce the threat they pose. Diplomacy can go a long way. The point I'm trying to make that seems to be sailing right over your fetal alcohol syndrome riddled mind is that the United States isn't as bad as people think it is. It's not doing amazing and it's certainly seen better days, but it's doing okay and making a slow but steady recovery from the 2000's. Not that you would admit that. All you seem interested in is convincing other people how shit the United States is and how much fast it's going down the shitter just to stir up panic and fear. If I'm on the payroll of MSNBC, then you're on the payroll of Fox News.

      Samuel Andrychowski While diplomatic meetings are been hosted with Iran, today at 6pm EST we will hear the results. I predict, they are going to ask for an extension until June maybe July. At the same time, the government in Iran keeps on slaughtering homosexuals and killing women who they believe are unworthy.
      Cuba said they are not doing anything until the entire embargo is lifted and the US returns Guantanamo back to Cuba... and Obama promised closing Guantanamo back in 2008 as part of his presidential campaign and he has done nothing but releasing prisoners recaptured or killed again in the battle field. Just this week the US said is going to start drone bombing Iraq again to try to get rid of ISIS and just today the US was accused of killing Iraqi civilians in drone strike.

      If the economy was in such a good shape, why did the US lost their credit rating from a AAA all the way to an -A since 2011?

      Only when the republicans regain control of congress and put a stop to increasing the debt ceiling the nation credit rating begin to improve. For the government unemployment drops when people stop collecting unemployment, not when they get a new job.
      Obama took care of doubling our national debt from 8 Trillion dollars when Bush left office and collected from almost the birth of our nation to a whopping 17 Trillion and counting... and all by himself with the help of the Democratic (Progressive) party.

    I like the fact that this video isn't one sided. It's such a relief to hear someone talk about politics how it actually happened and not with partisanship. We need the government to stay more to the center for everyone, work for the people. We need an even amount of freedom and help from the government for people in bad situations. I lean more right because of my belief in gun rights and less government but everyone has their own beliefs and we all need to come together to keep our country for the people by the people.

    I'm sorry Obama, but to curb the "squabbling" one has to be neutral. Neutral does not reside on the left hand side of the room.
    And for all of you that say Mitt Romney would've done a better job, probably not and/or the same quality as Obama.

    • @mysterioace2544
      @mysterioace2544 10 лет назад +3

      I think the "squabbling" will not stop even if the president was to be of neither party and only playing the role of referee in congress and senate. A multiparty system might work better with at least three major parties.
      That is what we have had in Finland for a while until it became four major parties with four minor parties making for a total of eight parties. With this system we have always had at least 3 parties forming a coalition, and at the moment have 5 parties in government (one of them left this spring).
      The reason I think it might help is that having so many parties in the Finnish parliament has deradicalized the parties to an extent that at best we have had the far right and the far left in the same coalition with the centrist parties in the opposition. Furthermore, the parties play ball to get things done because they know that if they don't compromise from time to time, alliances can be made against them and their voters may switch parties. After all, they have a lot of options to choose from.

      Believe me, the multiparty system does not work. There is so much vote splitting it's crazy. Here in Canada, the conservative party (our version of the US republicans) won a majority of seats with less than 40% of the popular vote and now they have absolute power over all of Canada even though most Canadians hate them and their policies. I'd much prefer the two party system.

    • @mysterioace2544
      @mysterioace2544 10 лет назад +1

      coolgy67 I believe the problem there is with the voting system, and I would assume the system in place is the one known as "winner takes all", which causes serious distortion in multiparty systems.
      In Finland however we have a system whereby the country is split into several geographical areas with each area receiving seats in accordance to the area's population. For example the city of Helsinki has 24 seats, and each party is allowed to run up to 24 candidates for the seats in Helsinki.
      When voting happens, we also have a counting system where each vote is not only a vote for a candidate, but a vote for his or her party. How it works is that the most voted person in each party gets the full amount of votes the party received, the 2nd person gets half, 3rd gets a third and so on. While this system has issues with charismatic vote-magnets being able to pull idiots along with them into parliament, it still secures a parliament which roughly follows the actual voting patterns of the voters. Indeed, only the Pirate Party gained the threshold 0.5% you theoretically would need for a seat without gaining one in the last elections.

    "You must buy Obamacare." Finally, it has been said. A music teacher of mine who is self-employed doesn't have or want health insurance. He and his family are all in excellent health and he sees no reason to pay for something he won't use. As of May of this year, it will be more expensive for him to *not* pay for it, as the fines are going to pile up. If a private company were to threaten you with financial ruin for not buying their service, they would be breaking the law. When the government does it, it's fine?

      so your teacher doesnt want affordable healthcare incase for example he gets cancer, hell a broken hip could ruin your whole life in america as in most countries its a few weeks off work followed by a year of rehab all for free. just to be clear you realise most countries in the world have national healthcare which is free to everyone in the country which is paid for by tax. the fact americans dont want universal healthcare is just plain retarded.

    • @SpectacularName
      @SpectacularName 9 лет назад +6

      I never said that there wasn't any danger in what he was doing, I was just saying that it's wrong for the government to force him to pay for something that he won't use. Given his limited income, Obamacare isn't particularly affordable either. I take some issue with your perception that because that's the way it is done in many other countries, that we should do it too, as if America has no economic or social differences when compared to Canada. Don't get me wrong though, I think that it makes sense for us to go the route of universal healthcare, but forcing people to pay for it isn't something I think America is ready or willing to put up with yet.

    • @sc2starkey
      @sc2starkey 9 лет назад +3

      whydidyoudothatkarl although affordable is the title of the bill it does not exactly mean it will be as such. I dont see how it can be cheaper by adding more middleman. Choosing to be apart of a expansive national healthcare system should be just that, a choice. If it is so great why is there a fine for not doing it? If it is so wonderful why do we have to punish people who don't join it? I'm not saying being forced into something means its always bad but when you don't have a choice you should always question why.

      Why just S.E. Asia? Why not all of Asia? But, yes, I agree with your point. Most western textbooks are written with a European bias and as a result, they never cover Asian history to an extent that is respectable to its sheer size. Just China alone is a massive undertaking to learn about, with respects to India. I currently live in S.E. Asia, Singapore, and have learned an incredible amount since then that isn't in any western textbook. I've learned about the Siamese empire (maybe once or twice) of Thailand, the Cham people of Vietnam, Gajah Mada of Indonesia, and Naresuan. All of whom have impacted the world to an extent that I deem important to learn about. So, a lesson on Asia would be great.

    • @Ashadow700
      @Ashadow700 10 лет назад +1

      I was limiting myself to S.E Asia just because all of Asia is so huge, I don't think it would be possible to cover it all properly in one series. I mean, they could probably make a whole series about the Middle East or Russia alone, so talking about them, as well as India and China in one go just doesn't really seem possible.

      ***** I can understand him not going over every issue, especially the ones that will probably be drowned out in the history books (no one remembers that it was Wilson who segregated the military and set civil rights back 50 years, after all, so there's no reason to cover it) - My complaint was more that instead of going over the negatives, he just sorta glossed over them and said he was doing a heck of a job, which by all available metrics is just one big cover up for a failing administration.
      After he covered both the good and bad for President Bush rather fairly, I thought we'd see the same for President Obama, but I guess not.

      I have quite a few socialist views myself, but as an American, I can say with confidence that our country has wavering faith in it's government. Having said that, I'm sure that said faith varies by region and individual, but I have rarely meet anyone who is satisfied with our current government (For those that I meet that care).
      As far as socialism is concerned, it goes against the ingrained principle of american "independence". Also, we still have a bit of a phobia towards non-democratic views, despite being a republic. We also care quite a bit about our own opinion's and view's, which are often fueled by the two things I just mentioned.
      What's wrong with socialism? Nothing out of the ordinary, it's just not popular in the US.

      Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.
      ~Alexis de Tocqueville

    • @JinwooYoon1217
      @JinwooYoon1217 10 лет назад +12

      Reaper Kira Actually, democracy has quite a lot to do with socialism, depending on your country. Let's say you and a handful of people are working the same job from the same company. In this job, you do the hardest work or perhaps you simply work longer. Socialism would say you deserve to be paid more since you worked longer and/or harder (This is based on Marxist theory, by the way). Just that mentality alone would prove that socialism is not about "restraint and servitude".
      Of course, working for a wage in and of itself would probably be considered a socialist way of life based off Tocqueville's definition of socialism (Restraint and servitude). In fact, if you honestly believe socialism is so different, the idea of living off a wage (Which a HUGE majority of people do) should disgust you immensely, and you should be taking active steps into seeing to it's end. This is also true to any government based program for the sick or the poor, as that too is socialist (A program/industry ran and controlled by the government).
      Your free to not like socialism as much as you want, and I'm not arguing the pro's and con's of socialism vs democracy. However, saying "democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality" is simply incorrect. In fact, as pointed out by the comment above, they have the tendency to go hand and hand.

    I've been on a Crash Course US History binge and... it would appear that we have run out of US History. Think enough time has passed for a US History episode 48? :D

    Mr. Green, you should keep making more of these films at the end of every president's term, extending this series up till the day you die. It would make an amazing series, showing not only the history but your changing views and outlook over time, as you get older and wiser.

    'Things that Congress used to be able to hash out back when their business was governing not ideological rigidity'
    He's hit the nail on the head there. I'm from Scotland and I spent the last two summers in the US and what struck me is most people support what their party say BECAUSE it's their party (particularly Republicans). Rather than analysing the policies first THEN choosing what party to support they blindly accept whatever their party say - which seems intrinsic to their identity. It's an irrational way to think and it holds America back. I found it shocking, but it explained a lot.

    i take universal healthcare over what we have in america now any day. i would like to go to the doctor or dentist and get a simple check up with out having to pay like a bajillion dollars. we are like the only ones in the west that are considered a 1st world country but a citizen cant even go to the doctor with out going damn near bankrupt. maybe obamacare is not the system we need exactly but i do sincerely think america would do well with universal health care. as with all presidency, there has been highs and lows with obamas presidency, but i'd much rather obama than bush. he's the one who took us to the shitter in the 1st place. makes you wonder if Gore was the better option

We would have lots more money and lives now if that was the case... That would be nice...

      The problem isn't entirely insurance. Plenty of countries have pitiful insurance but our medical costs are absolutely astounding. This is in part greed and part high cost of actually being a doctor or dentist.

    • @JakeHRogers
      @JakeHRogers 10 лет назад +10

      I live in the UK where we have the National health service and can get treated for free. It's a fantastic privilege but if any country wants to set up something like this you have to acknowledge the unbelievably high cost to set up and maintain - which means your tax bill will go through the roof.
      Ultimately you have to decide as a people - low taxes or free healthcare? (Healthcare would be my choice)

      brandon idgaf If they'e already paying too much tax and they wanted a national health service then they would need to make cuts elsewhere. That's the trade-off, it is an extremely costly service to have.

    The US military budget should be cut substantially. Its ridiculous that making tanks and starting wars is more important than social programs and infrastructure.

    • @Lotusflowerful
      @Lotusflowerful 10 лет назад +3

      Regardless of the subject, when making a claim it's stronger if you substantiate it with evidence and reasoning. Your claim implies all sorts of smaller ideas. A smaller budget means a smaller military, therefore the US military should be reduced. The US military budget causes the US start wars, and starting wars is bad. Money cut from the defense budget should be put towards undefined social programs and infrastructure. Social programs and infrastructure are a better investment that making tanks because...

      I think it's pretty obvious that a country that spends more on a standing military than the rest of the world combined while not having a functioning Universal Healthcare System, like every other industrialized nation, is doing something wrong.

      Hmm, here is a thought for you. Our government spends more than the top 26 spend on their defense combined and 25 of those 26 are our allies. Cutting the defense budget to be spent on ANYTHING improving our country would be a better spending of that money.

    You know what else the Founding Fathers would be amazed by?
    "What, there is now a treatment for Cancer? And diabetes? And ingrown toenails?"
    When they were around the extent of medical intervention was amputation then prescribing rum and bed rest. They weren't even paid to wash their hands. The Founding Fathers weren't for expenditures on healthcare as _there was nothing to spend it on_.
    Also back then, people were paid a living wage, to cover the expected expenses of their entire life.
    That is no longer the norm, the lowest wages (which huge proportions of the population are on) are not enough to raise a family on and put enough away for a pension. Wealth is so concentrated towards the top this is why there is a demand for welfare.

    • @DirtyOdin64
      @DirtyOdin64 10 лет назад

      Except that Keynes wouldn't even want his name in a foot note when describing this current economic model. The only thing comparable is the belief that government must be involved in the economy.

    • @rastaman24211
      @rastaman24211 10 лет назад +5

      Luke Shows He is actually right, though not for the reasons he may think he is. Keynesian Economics has been discredited for about 40 years now. This is because one of the key things the entire theory hinged on was the Phillips Curve which was disproved by the monetarists during the stagflation of the 1970's. There is New Keynesian economics which is a current school of economic thought and prescribes much of the same policy recommendations for the economy, however the reasons for which it prescribes those policy recommendations are very different from Keynes's reasons.
