Phase B or the steeplechase rounds from the British Riding Club’s Long Format Two Day Event that was held for the first time in May 2015 at Princethorpe College near Rugby. Pigeon was feeling a bit keen and jumped really well when I didn’t interfere (which I did on the second circuit). Nothing to add from phases A-C to my poor score from the dressage and show jumping. Fortunately there were lots of penalties in the dressage (quite a harsh judge) and plenty of cricket scores in the show jumping. A clear cross country (slightly over the optimum time) and strong scores from the other West Oxfordshire/South Warwickshire riders put our team in 6th place overall. I am looking forward to going to this event again next year when I am sure it will be greatly improved upon after their inaugural event!

Hi, just wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the steeple chase part of the 2DE? My friend is doing it for the first time and asked for my help but I've never done it so don't really know! Is there an optimum time or? Also what size are the fences? Are the like standard racing hurdles?
By the way I love watching you and pigeon!

This is only the second time I have done a long format event but the roads, tracks and steeplechase isn’t that complicated really. You get an optimum time for each phase, and use your stopwatch to check you are not going to be over time (you are not usually penalised for being under, lucky for me). Phase A is your warm up roads and tracks (so a slightly quicker time designed to trot and canter - Pigeon did not want to trot though so ours was more of a canter and gallop for three minutes under). Phase B is your steeplechase (fastest time as you are meant to be in a steady gallop and jump out of stride - it was two minutes at this comp and the fences were not big and easy to brush through [it was the same jumps for the 80, 90 and 100 classes]). Phase C is a cool down roads and tracks (so a longer optimum time as you are encouraged to walk and trot - Pigeon did not want to walk though so ours was more of a trot and jog, and again we were three minutes under). You usually have to trot the last few metres of Phase C so the vets can check your horse’s soundness as you enter the 10 minute box where the vets will also monitor the horse’s heart-rate and recovery and check for any cuts and scrapes before confirming you are fit to go onto to Phase D, the cross country. On Phases A and C there should be markers every one kilometre. What we usually do is take the optimum time deduct two minutes then divide by the number of kilometres so you can check your time at each marker and go faster or slower if you need to (we then write the times elegantly on our arms - two day event fashion tip). As you take two minutes off you also have that bit of wiggle room to play with. Much will depend on the horse… the sooner you get to the ten minute box the longer you have to recover before the cross country but if you go too fast you will have less fuel in the tank for the cross country course! Thanks for watching… wish your friend good luck from me. I hope you both have a great weekend :D xx
