  • This movie is garbage but its good. This is my second favourite adaptation of Author Conan Doyle's story. I like ideas presented in the film, it differs from the source material and goes along on it's own way. Its dark and graphic with some generally good scenes, which involve bad dinosaur puppets or CGI.

To add up to my first comment, this movie really nailed the entire “prehistoric plateau” tone and atmosphere. The fact that it all takes place not in a Amazon-like jungle adds to a suspense and atmospheric tone, as it mimics real Jurassic period environment. Not to mention the entire sub-plot with a advanced civilization that ones lived on the plateau and built their city there (obvious nod to the Indian tribe from the novel), but were driven out by the so-called “Neanderthals” aka those people wearing dinosaurs skull-masks (another nod to monkey tribe from the original novel), which is kinda a concept for Peter Jackson’s Skull Island plot from his King Kong’s remake, basically premise is the same about traces of ones great civilization that co-existed with dinosaurs but perished and now there are only savages and ruins left. And that movie was shot in 1998, soooo… The entire “evolution” concept for dinosaurs is also something to be found in both early 1996 Jackson’s plan for remaking Kong and in 2005 movie. So technically this The Lost World movie predated those ideas :\
Another interesting concept is the T. Rex. Sure it looks goofy and strange with a big hands and raptor’s like body, but it deliberately stalks main characters from the moment they crash into the plateau and teased multiple times before it finally appears in full. Also, dinosaur roars in this move are distorted and do not sound like a typical roars in media, so it also can add up to a scare factor. Overall, creators 100% nailed the atmosphere of a B-horror movie adventure and even added up some unique and really disturbing moments, and there are NO way we will get The Lost World adaptation that gory and disturbing now, even 2001 version was pretty light on that stuff. This a unique adaptation, not a great movie by itself, but an interesting experience. I really hope that more people in the future can appreciate this adaptation for what it is and why it was done the way it was.

IMO this is the second or the third best The Lost World adaptation. The only movie beside 2001 version that nailed scary part and even created its own unique atmosphere. Also this T. rex is one of the most terrifying dinosaurs created for movies, not even joking. There is something uncanny in his bad CGI + animatronic motions. Not to mention Summerle death that was unbelievably gory for a TLW adaptation and was shot pretty well, props to screenwriters and Bob Keen for this. Also interestingly enough this is the first adaptation to include John Roxton as a character since original 1925 movie (1960 and 1992 versions completely ignored him) AND make him a main villain, which is actually pretty clever and interesting decision. David Nerman nailed the part. Overall movie is not that good, but it’s also a unique horror flick with interesting twists and turns for a classic Conan Doyle’s novel adaptation. And, like I said, probably my favorite adaptation next to the original 1925 version and 2001.
And this all comes from a guy who actually liked and adores The Lost World novel since early childhood many years ago.

I like your opinion and agree with all you've said. I saw this movie as a kid and it was terrifying!

Damn this is a blast in the past for me, I had a vhs when I was a kid and my mom would always get me dinosaur movies. I eventually decided to watch this one and I remember at the time it being very different then Jurassic Park and it sorta creeped me out. But about like 30 minutes ago a part of my head just activated and I started to think about it, so I find myself scrolling through a huge Wikipedia page of nearly every dinosaur movie under the sun, and I knew as soon as I saw the name it was it (although there are like 10 other lost world films) so just to be sure I was right I clicked on this vid and sure enough it was, Thanks.

I actually agree with you. This film's bad, but it's not THAT bad.

It's bad but even the worst film could be worse. There's no end to the nameless issue movies have and it's psychological hard to describe 'badness' as in a bad movie.

1:26 Also that is a spooky dinosaur concept. I would LOVE to see that in a horror film...

I thought this was an am review of the 2001 make. That was a good B movie and highly well-made. This 98 indie flick is a bomb. Defending the effort is sad. I made something this bad in middle school, overall this entire feature is childish. It's sad how people root for a bad, weak movie instead of allowing it to be forgotten. Hell, the director might even want to redeem himself by making a more mainstream or thorough production.
