Saw this (at least 10 times) in the theater when it was released, 43 years ago. My girlfriend and I, went every Sunday afternoon to the matinee and made out in the back row...We were 12, and I think it cost something like $1.25 to get in.
What makes this movie sweet is that we all have to compromise our dreams in some way. And no matter who you marry, that person will let you down and you will have to accept some things about him (or her) that you would rather not. But real love can withstand those tests.
The Lover gimmick is a mix of Gorgeous George and Ricky Starr, both of whom did effeminate gimmicks, but, were actually very skilled grapplers (Starr was a collegiate champion and didn't do his ballet gimmick in Texas, where he was known as a grappler).
When I was little, I thought that was Ric Flair.
Love the cast!
