I... I want to try and explain why I cried to this. To who? I don't know, but I have to put this to words. I am good at math, I've always been good at math. I'm good at things where patterns and problems and solutions are king. I've figured out that I rely on my pattern-seeking thoughts, the identification of what is "natural" and "following the rules of the system". My studying consists mostly of interrogating my math homework for the why, the flow of the equations and theorems and all of that. I don't study to memorize, I study to watch variables act out a practiced sequence of moves that always evaluate to "true". So why do I cry with this video? Why is it that the crescendo of the waltz gives me goosebumps and frission out of mind? Because along each and every frame of this movie there are two truths: A threefold symmetry is maintained with colors all in synchrony just like a practiced dance, and there is a promise, a narrative absolute that whatever is done, it will return to perfect simplicity. And oh, what a narrative ride that is! The triangle is separated, diced up, sometimes entire sections being flung out into the ether. The triangularity is traded away for a hexagonal symmetry, similar but not the same. The music dictates this movement, and all seems lost as colors are shuffled and reorganized into something a less whole, less regular, less triangle. But it's so beautiful, it's a tragedy with dulcet tones reassuring me that all is well, all is good, that my friend the triangle will reappear. And they do! often as a center to a far more complex structure, but my friend reappears with almost a wink as it is subsumed by the larger orchestration. The finale, with countless kites of color stretching the limits of symmetry to something I almost can't reassure myself. Is there symmetry? I can't tell from a glance. I know it must be, that we will return, but I don't believe... And then, and then there are subtle triumphant musical notes as the mass of kites shift with great effort, beyond what I could imagine, into a snowflake so resplendently colorful. Tell me, can you imagine a colorful, symmetrical snowflake anywhere else? A pure geometric beauty, wrought only out of the three primary colors? And in such a quick turn of events, I can see it, my friend returning. Chaotic and regular, unexpected and consistent, am I talking about a geometric animation or my own existence on this wild world? The music returns to its origin as the triangle is made whole without injury from its amazing transformations. I see patterns every day in my life. I see chaos that is utterly structured. I am never promised that it will all be ok. But I cannot help but cry for my friend the triangle as he is returned safe, secure, and enlightened. I cry for Notes on a Triangle, every time, because there is nothing else in this world that can talk to me in a way that mathematical transformation can. By symbolism, I am told that no matter what, I am a triangle. I am a chaotic, structured mess of colors and sounds and transformation. But I am ok.
I saw this beauty for the first time in 1991, at my school, in a presentation made by the documentary filmmaker Mario Grasso, renowned for those years in my country. Today, I saw it again since my father has recorded that event on VHS, and I felt the same emotion and surprise as when I was 9 years old. Beautiful! Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Beautiful! One of my favourites of all times!! Together with dance squared, fiddle de dee . hen hop, le merle, stars and stripes and others... Watched them over 1000 times since 1972 when I saw them first time at high school and fell in love with these experimental shorts. I have them all in my 16mm and VHS collection.... another I love is this weird short Angel... LOL
link123triFoRce Yes, a lot. All the 70's decade. Haven't heard about Boards of canada... those are scottish I believe.. but more from 80's, 90;s upwards...I see in google.. will listen to them ...
This animation - namely, its wonderful score and my memories attached to the total work, but also the imagery - has brought me to tears at times. Thank you.
+Tim Oakrie You joke, but Mitsubishi's logo is actually from the emblem of two Japanese clans that the company's founder originally worked for. The name means 'three-pronged water caltrop'.
+Holgast you fucking waste, how the fuck can you say something so stupid? do you brush your teeth with ass in the morning? that's not the real reason, trust me, I like Subarus you fucking shit.
***** The actual animation wouldn't be that hard to do by hand. The beauty in this short is the choreography, which a modern computer based animator would *still* have to figure out in his/her head.

You seem to like the 70s a lot, have you heard of Boards of Canada? I think you'd love their sound!

It's so unbelievable. They made every frame by hand.
I have this song more than 10 years .I see it in the TV .Then I look for it.Good job for sure.
It's by far my favorite movie about triangles!

Huh. Didn't think anyone else felt this way. The music feels weirdly melancholic - a simplicity that makes you sad.
This seems like the kind of thing you show to children in darkened classrooms to get them to fall into existentially uneasy slumber
Watching this takes me back to when I lived in the UK. *clutches her blanket like her life depends on it*
[screams geometrically]
Yes
Ramiel waifu - best waifu!

Behold, the birth of a thousand logos. #graphicdesign
+Matt Jensen that is exactly what i was thinking all throughout the video. "this would be a damn nice logo"
+Matt Jensen 1:08 is where Mitsubishi got their logo
+Tim Oakrie You joke, but Mitsubishi's logo is actually from the emblem of two Japanese clans that the company's founder originally worked for. The name means 'three-pronged water caltrop'.

All done without computers

It's all about the timing.
Probably done without a computer 💻 or maybe not

Wow
Someone needs to remake this.
Honestly, unless you're talking about the audio quality, I don't think it needs remaking.

Oh, ok. Yeah, that would be interesting. :)
I'm thinking about doing a sequel to this.
