  • The name Jeremiah, derived from Hebrew ("Ir-me-yahoo") and Latin ("E-anemias"), means "The Lord exalts" or "The Lord establishes." Jeremiah was set apart by God for a special purpose before his birth. Born in Anatot, near Jerusalem, to a priestly family in the Southern Kingdom of Judah, Jeremiah's life and ministry spanned 40 years, beginning in King Josiah's 13th year. Known as the "weeping prophet," Jeremiah interceded for Judah, warning of disaster due to idolatry and social injustice.
Despite persecution, including being thrown into a pit, Jeremiah remained steadfast. He prophesied during Judah's decline, overlapping with contemporaries like Ezekiel and Habakkuk. His messages often paralleled Ezekiel’s, despite their separate locations-Jeremiah in Judah and Ezekiel in Babylon.
The Book of Jeremiah is the longest prophetic book, detailing Judah’s downfall and Babylon’s invasions. Significant events include Jerusalem's destruction in 586 BC and multiple exiles to Babylon. Jeremiah’s prophecies were not only for his time but also for future generations, containing warnings that extend to modern descendants of Israel.

Was prophesying in Palestine? How, since ISRAEL was the nation's name until after the 2nd Temple was destroyed?

Prophecy in the Hebrew Bible and subsequent traditions occurred in the geographic area historically known as Israel/Judah, which later became administratively labeled *Palestine* by external powers. The name changes reflect political shifts, not a discontinuity in the region’s religious significance. Thus, prophesying is tied to the land and its people, transcending evolving geopolitical labels.

So, while biblical prophecy occurred in the land of Israel/Judah, later historical terminology sometimes referred to the region as Palestine. The usage of the term depends on the historical context.

@@BibleepicTV That is a WEAK excuse. The nation of ISRAEL was not renamed Palestine until AFTER AD 70. I think you have revealed your antisemitism in your anachronistic choice of names.

So, when discussing prophecy, it is accurate to say that biblical prophets prophesied in Israel or Judah, not in what was officially called Palestine by the Romans after the Second Temple’s destruction. However, some may use Palestine as a broader geographical reference without meaning to contradict historical names.
