The reason why bugs "like" light, is because they instinctually orient themselves by the light of the sun.
If the light is very close to them, they just fly in circles around it, getting closer and closer.

I put a fluorescent shop/drop light in my chicken coop thats on the back of my barn under a 20x30 open shed. Glad I caught your video, great idea. My version would have probably made my chickens legs tough to eat from all the jumping around for bugs hahaha.

Have you tried a shallower version? Maybe so that the holes are closer to bottom, like about an inch or two above the water. Do you think that the chickens would stick their head in the hole and eat the bugs out of the water? I picture placing it in the pin away from the roost so that while they sleep it collects, and when they wake up it is self serve. No need to dump all the time. Just would need to change the water maybe once a week.

Good ideas. Also, I wonder if a $2 walkway solar light would be enough light?

+Brian Rica - Where did you find a translucent bucket and lid? Awesome idea. Thanks!

That is a blue bucket from Lowes (with Lowes advertising on side). The color of the bucket does not matter as long as light can come through the holes.

Have you thought about making an earth battery to power the light?

Not very cost efficient, eh? Electricity vs. small amount of bugs.
