Vader is an absolute powerhouse who’s main fuel is self-hatred, being “the chosen one” seems to always give him a leg up… But Maul has always seemed like the most “pure” sith, his hate and rage never wavered, he never seemed to lose momentum even when he was utterly destroyed by his foes.
I got to disagree on this one. It's in his name, Darth Maul, the dude was made to be a weapon and nothing more. His knowledge of the force, secret sith abilities, and sith history leaves a lot to be desired. I don't believe Sidious ever truly planned on him being his successor. Once Anakin popped up I think Sidious meant to make him his apprentice and groomed him for that role for years....which then begs the question of Dooku. Again I don't think Sidious meant for him to be his successor, but just another pawn in his plans. Dooku being Dooku however would never take to just being some dark jedi, he had to secure his place as the new sith lord, and Sidious took him on planning for Anakin to one day kill him.

I LOVE Clone Wars and Rebels! Still remember when Darth Maul had his final battle with Kenobi which didn't lasr long at all but was amazing nonetheless!
There's so many aspects, not even story lines, from Legends Disney could use and make Star Wars great again. Sith alchemy is high on my list of things I'd like to see explored.
So Disney took a lot from the old canon and transferred it to new rails. Here you have the surviving Boba Fett, and Travna with plans to fill the power vacuum in the galaxy, and the son of Han and Leia who turned to the dark side. And the cherry on the cake is the resurrected Sidious through cloning, who learned to drain the power from other Forceusers like the Sith from old video games. Here the question is how did they implement all this? (mostly not very well)
Sidious had many Sith experiments going on in the background. I wouldn't be surprised if ressurecting Darth Maul was one of them. Always loved this comic. Never got a chance to read it myself, but I remember seeing that panel, where Vader reveals the source of his hate. One of the most powerful lines ever from him IMO.
It's interesting because Maul had an indirect influence in the creation of Vader. Had Qui Gon not been killed, he may have been able to lead Anakin away from the Dark Side.

Can't believe Rob gave a mention to Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma. Let's go!!!!
Love that you’re covering EU content of Star Wars Vader absolutely was better and stronger than Maul in any aspect of combat but that lone spark of light was his greatest weakness as Maul points out. The only reason I think Maul does as well as he did is because, as you said, Vader isn’t as fast as he was. In the EU it’s described how Vader in his early years had to completely rebuild his fighting style from the ground up to compensate for his cybernetics. And this is a early version of Vader who’s nowhere near as strong and refined a duellist as he would later become. Vader in ROTJ when he’s described to be at his peak and supposedly “80%” of Sidious would crush Maul with no effort. Please keep covering Star Wars, so much good content and characters that are lesser known, especially in the EU!
Agreed. I’d argue that Maul is the single worst duelist for Vader to fight, just the hardest fight for him to take and he still won. That’s terrifying hahaha. Legend.
It was mentioned in the Legacy era by the Emperor's Hand Lumiya that indeed getting machine components inside his body Vader wasn't a proper Darth Lord .
I love it when you cover Star Wars content! I would really enjoy it if you covered Charles Soule's Darth Vader run (2017) as it is an insanely good story and arguably the best Star Wars comic run. (Also, you should remember that this is a "legends" comic and does not fit within the canon of Star Wars which was reset in 2013)
Yeah Rob really should have made it known that this was Legends. It's a story that came out long before even George brought him back in Clone Wars, so that really messes with things. I'm not even sure Rob's aware because he seemed to reference both Canon and Legends stories when talking about the characters, and they do differ (although not a lot) across the different continuities.
Maul and Nihilus are the two most absolutely underrated Star Wars villains of all time. Maul would crush Vader in a lightsaber battle and Nihilus would crush everyone in an all out force battle.
Without question, this is exactly how this fight would’ve ended. Yes, Darth Mail may have more hatred in general but Vader’s hatred has a focal point in himself. I would argue that when you have a focal point with the force it allows you bolster your own power or your “foundation” in the force. With maul it’s like spreading yourself to thin by hating everything. Mail was defeated before this started, Vader just needed an opening
11:35 Technically he would always have that potential, I feel he'd continue to be too focused on the martial arts/lightsaber forms aspect of being a Jedi.
This concept for the source of Darth Vader's endless hate and rage, being generated by his own self loathing and hate at how easily he knelt to the emperor, how quickly he gave into the dark side, how easy it was for him to slaughter younglings, how he betrayed everyone he loves. Even the concept of his meditation, it's just him sitting there dwelling on how he betrayed everything and threw it all away. It's even foreshadowed in clone wars... his regret for slaughtering the Tusken Raider's. It even make sense why the Emperor did not want Darth Vader to fight Obi-wan, because that lasting link to his old life made his hate burn hotter while Vader desired nothing more then to kill him.

Truth be told, we had a definite answer in Episode 6 (which I'd consider much more "canon" than the comics). Palpatine wants luke to take Vader down and be his new apprentice. Why? Because Vader is in fact a shell of himself, weakened by the machine parts and age. This was easily proven by Luke succumbing the the Dark Side a bit when Leia is threatened and easily overpowering Vader in his anger. Note that this is a Luke who's not had nearly the same amount of training and experience Vader had had over his life.
13:45 Wait, you stated at 00:05 that this took place BEFORE ep4. As such, Vader hadn't yet killed Kenobi so there's only supposition in play that Vader COULD kill Kenobi.
It's the "hint of light" still in him, comment. Darth Sidious senses that in Darth Vader and always has to be sure Vader is still on the Dark Side. Even though Vader is in service to the Emporer, he still thinks for himself, and that stands as a lasting threat to the Darkside of the force.
If we are talking in terms of potential in Legends Pre TCW Retcons And Tie Ins both The Skywalkers, The Mereks, The Solos, And Dooku had higher potentials then Mauls in the force but in terms of being more in tuned with the dark side itself Maul is more fitting to be Sidious apprentice then all of them because he has much less light and grey in him then those others do not to mention he was Sidious first force sensitive lacky so he holds a special place in Sidious twisted heart yeah.
What always got me with Anakin is how intelligent he was as a kid. He made C3PO and fixed everything as a slave kid. But, as he aged it seems like that level of intelligence was dropped off in his character. At least in the movies it seems to dissipate as he aged and he was manipulated by his emotions but his intelligence never picked up on what's going on.
I think that's the point. How an otherwise powerful and intelligent person, can break and bend to their emotions if they have no true or good father figure and aren't taught how to deal with their emotions but to just suppress them, can cause so much damage and be such a threat to life, society, the future etc
the 2d micro series clone wars he built his OG jedi fighter with a hyper drive. Had it looking similar to his pod racer. as compared to like the other jedi fighters which needed their own space ring.
@4:45 Vader wins. I feel like The Force Unleashed game really showed it best, both in the prologue Jedi Hunt, but also the bad ending fight against the very heavily damaged Vader keeping himself going off pure rage. He's a beastly fighter, and hunted down and killed swaths of Jedi during his years in the suit, Masters included. Maul is agile and an excellent fighter to be sure, but he has been humbled multiple times over including by Palpatine himself that he is not SO excellent of a fighter that he will even be favored against other experienced fighters. Anakin was arrogant, Vader is calculating and experienced. I don't think there is any canon which favors Maul over Vader if both are in their prime.
Id say given what happens in Clone Wars with Maul’s return, Vader would totally remember everything about him. He deff doesn’t have the same history with him as Obi Wan lol
As one who has never read the comics but meticulously watched ALL STAR WARS CONTENT REPEATEDLY, it's interesting seeing Vader slay Maul instead of Kenobi. But I agree - Vader would have defeated Maul. Absolutely. Maybe with less difficulty than here. Vader was ALWAYS more force proficient than Maul. Maul was blinded.
Just to point out, it's not Maul's nature to be like that. He was molded from a very young age. Pretty much tortured and forced to fight to survive. Sidious created a monster. Maul is a very compelling character, we were lucky that Lucas decided to bring him back. Also, Vader knew Maul was alive, I think. I don't actually remember a scene with both of them in TCW, but he would know. And they saw each other, i think,t in Rebels, but this seems before that. It might be hard for you because I know you're not so deep into this like you are with super heroes, but I would love if you covered more Star Wars comics. Edit: just realized this is not from that continuity.
"This guy was like people on Twitter. He was mad about everything." Heh, great analogy, and a very accurate one. 😄 As for which one wins...Vader every time.
Mauls mother is the only one as strong as the emperor too. If maul as he got older learned some of the dark side magic too he'd be even more powerful And vader didnt take out obi won yet. Or ever really.
None of them know how to truly balance the force. Anakin slash Vader was ment to be the strongest and balancing the force by being part of both sides. He is the reason why the Jedi fell and the empire rose and he is also the reason the sith fell and the empire lost.
Only Vader could hate himself so much, it outweighs the hate his opponent has. Dude is the literal personification of the uno reverse card.

NEVER IN THE STARWARS UNIVERSE HAS THERE EVER BEEN A TRUER STATEMENT...😎🤘💥💯💯💯
If we are talking in terms of potential in Legends Pre TCW Retcons And Tie Ins both The Skywalkers, The Mereks, The Solos, And Dooku had higher potentials then Mauls in the force but in terms of being more in tuned with the dark side itself Maul is more fitting to be Sidious apprentice then all of them because he has much less light and grey in him then those others do not to mention he was Sidious first force sensitive lacky so he holds a special place in Sidious twisted heart yeah.
I really hope you cover more starters stuff. The discussions are awesome
I love the Star Wars comics.
Nice to see these star wars comics vids
What always got me with Anakin is how intelligent he was as a kid. He made C3PO and fixed everything as a slave kid. But, as he aged it seems like that level of intelligence was dropped off in his character. At least in the movies it seems to dissipate as he aged and he was manipulated by his emotions but his intelligence never picked up on what's going on.
I must emphasize there is a difference between emotional intelligence and applicable intelligence
I think that's the point. How an otherwise powerful and intelligent person, can break and bend to their emotions if they have no true or good father figure and aren't taught how to deal with their emotions but to just suppress them, can cause so much damage and be such a threat to life, society, the future etc
Also he no longer has natural hands to be accentuated with the force
the 2d micro series clone wars he built his OG jedi fighter with a hyper drive. Had it looking similar to his pod racer. as compared to like the other jedi fighters which needed their own space ring.
Revenge of the Sith Novelization by Matt Stover.
Palpatine always knew how to use Vader weakness against him"that was always his advantage.Mail was just a bonus ✌🏻
Vader can survive for minutes with his life support turned off, and retain functionality/mobility. Aaron and Gilles both display this.
Id say given what happens in Clone Wars with Maul’s return, Vader would totally remember everything about him. He deff doesn’t have the same history with him as Obi Wan lol
please more star wars content in the future please
I wouldnt mind more star wars content
this comic was made before Desney owned Star Wars
As one who has never read the comics but meticulously watched ALL STAR WARS CONTENT REPEATEDLY, it's interesting seeing Vader slay Maul instead of Kenobi. But I agree - Vader would have defeated Maul. Absolutely. Maybe with less difficulty than here. Vader was ALWAYS more force proficient than Maul. Maul was blinded.
Love the star wars videos bro u gotta make one about the tales of the jedi comics from the 90s with exar kun ulic qel droma and vodo baas
"All I'm surrounded by is fear... and dead men."
Ahh star wars tales classic and solid should be brought back in some form but i wont hold my breath
"Myself."
I felt that one...
I would be down for you to cover more legends comics
It's time for Star Wars to dabble into some multiverse 😌
- Darth Vader vs Anakin
- Jango fet vs Boba Fet
- Obi-wan vs Palptine
I love darth maul he was my favourite in the clone wars
this question was answered in rebels. maul don't stand a chance
I'm begging you, please cover the star wars infinities comics!
"This guy was like people on Twitter. He was mad about everything." Heh, great analogy, and a very accurate one. 😄 As for which one wins...Vader every time.
Brightburn Request👿Beyond Omega Level: Kulan Gath!
“…he was like people on Twitter. He’s mad about everything.” 🤣🤣🤣
Mauls mother is the only one as strong as the emperor too. If maul as he got older learned some of the dark side magic too he'd be even more powerful
And vader didnt take out obi won yet. Or ever really.
None of them know how to truly balance the force. Anakin slash Vader was ment to be the strongest and balancing the force by being part of both sides. He is the reason why the Jedi fell and the empire rose and he is also the reason the sith fell and the empire lost.
Stormtroppers only miss their target when their targets are important movie characters. In universe they are supose to have good aim.
@Dm_ComicsExplained. no thanks scam artist
Maul always made a great punching bag. Only makes sense for him to get beat down again.
