They wound up doing it this way because they did not have the money for stuntmen and choreographing complex fights. But the minimalism winds up being extremely effective. A lesson to be learnt by all the bloated blockbusters.

The lack of focus on the actual violence itself also fits extremely well thematically.
Never a direct eye on the violence itself, just the aftermath - which is almost entirely representative of Joe. Joe's character is literally a portrait of the repercussions from traumatic brutality.

KentAllard How do you know that this is true? Because if you watch We Need to Talk About Kevin also by Lynne Ramsay, there’s no violence either. I think it’s clearly intentional

  • @chrisossu2070

What's interesting is that none of the violence happens fully on-screen. It's always out of focus, off-screen completely, or it cuts immediately to the aftermath.

she was probably working for the same pedophiles as the guard but people like seeing revenge stories when men get killed, they tend to be more squemish towards women so it was probably a film making choice to have Him kill the men but leave the woman. The kid in the beginning was probably left alive because he was just watching the door, he immediatly helped Him, and him being outside the brothel implies he's not on the same level as the guys inside. It's the same with drug dealers, they use kids to keep watch and alert the dealers to any police but they're not really part of the gang and dont do much besides call an alarm.

I actually bought the novel this is based on and the dvd of this the day after seeing it streaming on my iPad. I’m a book person so I usually like the books better, but in this case, the movie is MUCH better than the novella. It’s short, you can read it in an afternoon. But one of the things it does talk about is how all the young girls have “big sisters” who look after them (keep them drugged up and compliant), most of them are ex-sex workers who aged out of the prime market. So the lady here is probably Nina’s assigned Big Sister who feeds her drugs, makes her pretty, cleans her up between clients... whatever’s needed to make her sweet and presentable. There weren’t too many places where I felt like the book went into more detail than the movie, but I do remember that part since I’d wondered about it when I watched the movie. According to the novel rules, she is not a madam, she has people to answer to and would get in a LOT of trouble if her “sister” wasn’t perfect at all times. They actually present them as kind of victims themselves, as they Big Sisters often started as Little Sisters like Nina, get horribly addicted to drugs and don’t feel like they have a lot of other options in life. Obviously it doesn’t excuse what she’s doing to Nina though. The pedophiles though... they’re just bad and they deserve the hammer of justice coming down on them via Joe. ❤️

He doesn't kill women. It's not like that is explicitly said but you can easily walk away from this scene knowing that. It's just a part of Joe's character

The music here reminds me of Blue Velvet by Bobby Vinton and how it was used by Lynch, cheesy and safe... makes the scene more uncomfortable. To me it works.
