Between Chiayi and Yunlin counties, head east from Meishan Township #梅山鄉 along County Highway 162A for about 15 minutes, and you will come to the foot of Taiping 36 Bends #太平三十六彎.
Climb the 36 hairpin bends up to 1,000 meters above sea level, and you will arrive at the hometown of the Taiping - Japanese colonial era novelist Chang Wen-huan #張文環. In recent years, there have been active efforts to transform Taiping into a literature and arts village.
After staying in Taiping for a day, continue east toward the Alishan region to the village of Ruili. This small town surrounded by mountains has rather unique geological landscapes and beautiful bamboo forest tea gardens.
Summer nights in the Alishan National Scenic Area are filled with the glow of dancing fireflies. These two small villages - Taiping and Ruili -also shine with graceful and soothing humanity and natural brilliance.
