Prior to coming to Ponkan, we had heard that the people living on either side of the river came from different hometowns: Zhangzhou #漳州 on one side and Quanzhou #泉州 on the other. Their personalities and philosophies are therefore somewhat different, but they are all devout believers of Mazu. As such, the lives of people in Beigang and Xingang also both revolve around their respective Mazu temples.
Beigang’s temple lies on a road frequented by tourists, and the market next to the temple is a place bustling with locals.
Xingang’s market is also tucked away behind its temple. The two small towns are separated only by a river, yet their foods, tinged with their respective hometown flavors, are completely different.
This time, Avian and Kennie visit Mazu temples, decipher food secrets, and interview people from different industries to explore the ways in which Beigang and Xingang are similar yet different.

The casual manner and often irreverent humor of the two guides combine with deep historical knowledge and palpable love for Taiwan to produce a cultural documentary that is frequently both enlightening and engaging, instructive and poignant.
