Bart just taught me how my brain works. I’ve been putting myself down my whole life because of my adhd and how I knew I learned different from normal kids. I knew I had ADHD but never diagnosed. I was a psychology major and learned that way I have border ADHD. My parents still don’t understand why I am this way. I’m super happy to hear someone explain how my brain works and people with same symptom. Taika will be fine. he has great parents that support & understand him. Thank you Bart & Geo 💕

Second that, I always thought it was weird I had to be eating something or moving or doing multiple things in intervals just to get one task done 😂

Bart described it perfectly. It’s my superpower, I can focus on many different things at once while still thoroughly completing each task .

as a fellow person with ADHD i related so hard and tbh i need my parents to hear this episode. i worked so hard to get a degree in natural science to pursue a medical career but i felt so empty and unfulfilled after what should’ve been my biggest accomplishment so far but i felt empty. my parents always tell me my art or things i desire aren’t going to make me money or a stable career even my therapist says so but i feel so heard and seen and it gives me hope for myself in figuring out what i want to do in life. ty bart ❤

These episodes are awesome! Love having Geo ask and poke around to understand Bart; and, Bart explaining his views on variation, harnessing one’s “gifts” (I’d like to call it, despite inherently being neither), I thought was beautiful!

Question for Bart, do you ever feel like you’re in your head so much that you start to almost disassociate? I relate to a lot of what you were saying and just wondered if you delt with something similar? Love the podcast guys, I remember watching your skits back in elementary school when I definitely shouldn’t have been🤣 but it’s crazy too see how far you’ve come. Very proud of you giys

Fellow ADHD person here and I feel so seen and validated by the way Bart is describing his experience. I can totally relate to learning the one thing and then it growing into 10 variations of things. And I completely feel you Bart on needing to do at least 2-3 things so I can focus on one. When you asked Geo if it made sense, I answered yes so hearing her "whaaaaat???" cracked me up 😂😂😂thanks for this podcast!

Taika just brought a whole new meaning of "boys will be boys" for me. The stereotype (often pretty true) where guys just do stupid shit for fun with seemingly no reason besides entertaining ourselves never really leaves you. We've had this since we were children, but simply learn that there can be consequences for our actions and we have developed our critical thinking to know the possible outcomes of certain decisions, which can dictate what we decide to do. Taika is obviously still young, so the critical thinking isn't all there, but the way Geo was describing how he said "i just wanted to see what would happen" was so funny to me. Children are just real life intrusive thoughts.

I also want to touch into the ADHD topic a tiny bit. I turn 19 in 3 weeks just for a gauge of my age. I'm not diagnosed with adhd, but I've noticed over the years that I do have some qualities that a person with adhd might have (again, i'm not medically diagnosed so i can only assume). It's difficult for me to keep my attention focused on a task and even just when im standing, I constantly pace in random patterns and move a lot. I had some issues with this in school where my teachers only "negative" thing about me was that I would get off task. About 7 years ago in a summer tutoring program I was given detention for drawing on my water bottle (this is still stupid to me as I wasn't distracting anyone or causing any issues). Seeing Bart explain his perspective of ADHD, something he's had to deal with for so long, is very warming and relatable. A lot of what Bart says makes a lot of sense and it brought a different perspective to how I view ADHD.

Just want to pop in with my opinion oh ADHD and meds. I was diagnosed pretty late, in my mid 20s, but by this point of time i had been creating systems for me to be able to perform tasks since i was a kid. Both my parents are super progressive and allowed me as a child to figure out my hurdles in my own way, and because i was never forced to live within neurotypical systems and structures, I've been able to live a relatively successful and stress free life even without meds. I understand the need for medication, especially for adults who don't have ADHD friendly jobs, but I really appreciate this current generation of parents like Bart and Geo, letting their kids explore the way their brain works. Like my parents didn;t even know what i had, they just thought i was a strange kid and they just let me be strange my whole life and that's really helped me so much.

Working with young children, it’s crazy to see how little children’s attention span is. It literally can be for 30 seconds. I’ve learned that repetition is so important. Having a structure and repetition daily can help so much. Visuals can be beneficial as well. Along with doing activities that consist of moving around and then zoning down to focusing paper work, x- repeat.

I think that I have ADHD. I am 99.9% sure. I want to talk to a psychologist to see if I have it. I also feel like Adhd is a blessing and a curse. There are days I can hyper-focus and other days where I get so bored and try to get into the next thing. But for me, I believe that I have the inattentive version. But yeah, I won't find out until I go to my doctor and request to go to therapy later this year...

My son was diagnosed at 5 years old. So many teachers told me to medicate him 😒 Long story short he’s doing ot therapy once a week and at a new school were they have him in a classroom with accommodations. I’m worried though when he goes to middle school.

At Fit Learning, we totally do reps in short periods of time and build it up. For example, he could be writing letters for only 15s, and then gain access to reinforcement and eventually we’ll increase the time and increase his attention Span

Geo and Bart, when he goes to school speak with his teachers. You don't have to tell them he as ADHD. Just let them know that he is not purposely not paying attention. They will work with him. My son is 12 and has gotten much better at learning when he is drifting away and not concentrating and brings himself back

Most doctors won’t try to diagnose childhood ADD/ADHD until around 1-3rd grade. There are some severe kids who are very obvious and doctors will diagnose much earlier. For the most part, kids Taika’s age have a shorter attention span and some don’t. I really would wait a little longer when he really starts having to focus for longer periods of time. Many teachers aside from the parents, will catch it also. Mommy and daddy always know best, but wait and see. If he was to have it, work with him if possible rather than drug him up, especially if he’s not as severe. Most kids will grow out of it surprisingly. Chill on the vaccines too, those are known to cause it.

The clearest example is that all of that is hereditary. If one parent has it, there will be a child that has it if both parents have it, whether you're looking at a fun little smorgasbourg of the rest of human evolution because our species isn't turning around from this, we just need to find a way to work with it instead of make it work for the system that clearly it doesn't work for
