- Czechs and Slovaks were minorities with the Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empire. Even before the outbreak of the war they demanded more rights as industrious citizens but were often overheard. During the war, they decided to take matter into their own hands and fight. And that they did in many armies across Europe.

As a Czech I am happy to soo one person making this pun......😐😐😐

haha feck you
"Humbly report, sir: I am officially certified by a special commission as an idiot." (The Good Soldier Švejk)
the writer of the Svejk, Jaroslav Hasek, joined the Reds in the civil war. If caught by Legionnaires during the war, he would be shot on the spot as a traitor. (There was an explicit order for the execution of ex-AustroHungarian POWs who joined the Reds.)
I loved the part at the hospital for soldiers simulating dieseases. Their daily routine was hilarious.
I've just finished reading Svejk for the umpteenth time; it gets funnier every time you read it. Svejk as assistant to the chaplain is just sublimely funny.
A special episode about Jaroslav Haszek should be made
In a lunatic asylum, everyone could say anything that popped into his head, as if in parliament.
8:43 Joseph Stalin just a very unknown soviet politician
Diogo Carvalho yeah I don't think he'll make it very far
Stalin? Who's that?
jelena jankovic exactly
Wasn't he the guy who later cleaned toilets in the Kremlin?
betaich KGB inbound
My great grandfather served as a legionnaire in Russia. When he finally arrived home into a new sovereign state, it was four years after the end of the war. I am so grateful and proud about him and all those brave men in the Czechoslovakian legions.
Respect to your great grandfather, may he rest in peace. My great-grandfather served in "Rota Nazdar" in France.
My grandfather was an electrician. I found his helmet.
Greetings and thanks from former Czechoslovakia.
"When you can't go west, you go east until you reach the west." - Czech proverb
(it's not, looking forward to the next Czechoslovak special :))
I was always amused by the Czechoslovak legion as a Pole and cheered them all the way. It's a shame that we got into a war shortly after the war ended. Who knows what would've happened if Poland supported Czechoslovakia by the time of treachery at Munich.
indeed
It’s not difficult to predict what would happen if Poland supported Czechoslovakia in Munich. Both would be smashed and annihilated. Czechs and Slovaks escaped this by submitting to the Germans.
Summertime J I dunno about that, No-one will ever know.
Summertime J well not really. in 1938 Germans were not prepared to fight a war yet. And Poland had a large military by that time, not to mention small but very modern Czechoslovak army. Remember that Bohemia was largly fortified and was a really long border for the Germans to cross. If Czechs could hold the line, Poles could've invaded which would cause a confusion within the German staff. Not to mention (hopefully) the Uk and France's DoW on Germany
Battle for Silesian territory between Czechs and Poles was the biggest mistake after the Great war, which our nations made. I'm glad we're not making the same mistake as our grandfathers. It's just a shame what happened.
You guys need to hurry up with the story of the Czechoslovakian Legion. Its the stuff of legends. Respect from Romania
1:38 That is Vysoké Mýto :) my hometown
and my ancestor was in the Legion (he died in Italy)
ano je to krásně poznat :)
nope :) he died in hospital (I dont know which wounds he suffered or if some disease got him)
My ancestor (czech) was also on Italian front, unfortunately don't know what side :(
@Daniel de Bilek: Could have been both, no antibiotics at the time remember, and though medicine had greatly improved since the time of Napoleon deaths from infection were still common. One of my great Uncles suffered a relatively minor wound at Ypres, and died of gas gangrene (dont look it up, its ugly). Something preventable through antibiotics these days.
May your ancestor Rest In Peace
How is there not a movie about the Czech legion??
good question! i need to start writing a script
I think there is one in production. But I am not sure when will it will be released. It should be about their evacuation across the Russia.
That being said, there are a lot of books about legionnaires in Czech, since they were really popular after WW1.
care to share titles of those books pls?
There are.
There are for example:
Stopa legionáře
Návrat domů aneb cesta legionáře Václava Balcara kolem světa
Jan Šeba - Paměti legionáře a diplomata
Deník legionáře
and of course there (even though it's not stricly about czech legionnaires) is The Good Soldier Švejk
I am not sure how many (if any) of them are transalted into english. You migh have luck with some german translations (I assume you are german speaker from your name) but since i don't speak german, I can't really help you in this area.
There are as well some english books about legionnaires on amazon but from the names of the authors it seems that they are not autobiographies.
In the past we are enemy but now we are friends now .Welcome form Hungary
Poland sends their gratitude as well. V4
Let's call our wars a brother-bonding ^^;
V4 is a good thing.
Traitors and land thieves...nohing more.
Péter Németh, each nation should be ruled by its own people. So should Slovaks rule themselves. The southern border magyar villages that remained in Slovakia are unfortunately a mistake of Trianon, but the rest of the land belongs to Slovaks, as it did since Great Moravia, wouldn't you agree?
@@enlightenedterrestrial his name isn´t slovak he´s probably romanian and means transylvania
My grandfather was a Czechoslovakian legionary, I still have his medals at home.
+Martin Vargic , Important thing is that you still remember him. ;-)
Regards from France to the badass Czechoslovak soldiers !
Regards from Czech republic to the French army, because "No France No legions :)
Viva la France !
Great to see this video. My Grandfather was in the Legion. Rudolf Pelikan. He is mentioned in the book 'Legionari s lipovou ratolesti 1' 2013 - an account of 16 Generals of the Czech Legion.I still hear of stories of the Legion from my Father. Thank You
Thanks for remembering him.
My ancestors were not mentioned at any publications as they were common soldiers and Your comment makes me a bit envy, to be honest. Non the less your grandfather was a hero, and You should remember him as such.
Hi Mario, They were all heroes and without them there would not have been the creation of Czechoslovakia. They should all be honoured especially in this year of the Centenary!
Awesome .. !!!
I look forward to another heartfelt greetings from Slovakia
Dnes je 28. října. Dnes je to 100 let . Hoši děkujeme!
My great grandfather served in the Czechoslovak legion. He was conscripted to fight in the Austrian army in 1914, was captured by the Russians in the summer of 1915 then joined the legion in 1917. In 1918/19 he fought against the Bolsheviks across the trans-Siberian railway on the way to Vladivostok. I never knew him, and my family rarely talks about him. But I find his story so incredibly fascinating. He was just the son of a horse trader in a small town called ‘Troubilice’ in Moravia, but he ended up fighting through the karpaty of Slovakia against the Russians, then he fought in Ukraine against the Austrians, and finally fought the bolshevieks in support of white Russia.
I just wanted to share the experience of a man who went through it all. I think it’s important. His name was Josef Veprik
Regards from Serbia to our brothers in Czech Republic and Slovakia! Slava bratri!
Alex Jack Slava aj tebe :)
Pozdrav od Slovaka iz Srbije :D
every slav is our brother, even russians... not very liked brothers and certainly not the "Oak" of our family like many people say... but brother neveretheless
Thanks to our Slovak and Czech brothers from Serbia!
We remember your help!
hello bro
My great-grandfather was a Czech officer who fought at the Italian front - for the Austria-Hungary. Interesting fact is that he was proud of being Czech, but at the same time he also fought for his country which at the time was the empire. He and many of his borthers-in-arms felt the same way. His name was Theodor Slechta, his memoir (Sam v pozaru svetovem) has been published fairly recently (prepared for publication by his son), it's an interesting read, however it's written in czech only. :(
The Czech legionars are traitors my opinion
@@stevensamuels4041 oh yeah, they're such traitors for not wanting to be subjects of the empire.
Proud to be grandson of Czech legion soldier! Pity my grandfather died 20 years before I was born, so I never met him.... but I went through all his war diaries when I was teen..... fascinating first hand stories from the siberian oddysey
The story of the Czech legion during the Russian Civil War has been the number one video I have been waiting for.
My great grandfather fought in Czechoslovak legion in Russia. He was lower officer and went with his brothers (troop) across hole Siberia to Vladivostok. Than they wait for transport and finaly in 1920 on ship Mount Vernon across the globe back home. We have photo from Vladivostok (troops with Mount Vernon) and his saber. When i was kid, i had no idea about history, but my grandmother told me stories about her father. From that moment i am obsessed for history especielly history of Czechoslovak legions. I am really proud on him and on hole Czechoslovak legions. They don´t hesitate to fight for freedom of our nation and than against Bolsheviks. They were true heroes, but under communist dictatoroship after WW2 it was banned to talk and write about it. But stories survived and were told to another generation and i will continue with that and one day i will tell story to my children about their great ancestor.
My mother came from siberi a with Czech legions to Czechoslovakia,, so we are eye grateful for that!!!
As a czech guy all I can say, beautiful. Well explained sir.
08:39
That's the most...casual way of discribing Joseph Stalin
I love it!
When 2018 comes will you do a special episode about the Little Entante?
Vaginavigator 69Dawaj Well, that was after the WW1
Góbi K. Pig Strong 9323 Still possible, they will do a bit of aftermath. It's needed to fully explore The Great War.
Thank You from Czech republic :)
Ooooh, can't wait to see that other special!
Thank you for this great episode👍 ! Kind regards from Slovakia
Proud to be Czech!!
AgtfCZ I'm proud my ancestors could fight along yours! P.s. Your fellow Slovak brother here ;)
Kristian Sommer til next time my Slovak brethren. -a Czech in texas
me too but I think I'm Slovak. I heard the Slovak population in the Austro-Hungarian Empire was oppressed by the Hungarian administration there which is why so many Slovaks left for America.
Proud to be Czechoslovak !
Hello Im From Slovakia 🇸🇰
As Slovak I am proud of all of them. All of those Legionaries were dying for us. Slovaks, Czechs and many others.
Just because of their sacrifice we have now our states.
Only thing I am sad about is everyone are calling those legions "czech" and they forget about Slovaks and Czecho-Slovaks legions ....
And even Austrian polish soldiers from galitzia
Thank you for making this episode guys, I really like WW1/19th century history and as a czech this video means a lot. I would also like to ask you, whether you would consider making a video about all the different armies in the Austro-Hungarian empire, as most czech and slovak soldiers actually stayed with the empire to the bitter end ( including my grand grandfather who nearly died at the italian front).
+SniperiusForever that's probably something for a Czechoslovakia special.
SniperiusForever yeah agreed on that :) so we can see landwehr and honvéd units too
You're right.
In the Austro-Hungarian uniform, 175,000 Czech and 50,000 Slovak soldiers were killed. In the Legions: 5,000.
Austria's biggest submarine ace Zdeněk Eugen Hudeček was Czech.
Super! Jsem na tom s předkama podobně :)
My both Czech/Bohemian great-grandfathers from my father's side fought in the Great War for Austria-Hungary too, one ended up as a pow somewhere in Russia until the end of the war and the other was a dragoon who fought in Italy and Romania, where he often "worked" as a translator because he was fluent in Italian, German, Czech and Russian. :D
Also fun fact, when 11.11.1918 happened, my great-grandfather sent a postcard home saying that although he would prefer to meet his family he misses, he must now help his Slovak brothers fighting the Hungarians on the new border. :)
Ironically enough, isn't it?
Really looking forward to the next part! Please make it as long as it is possible for you. This historical moment is mostly forgotten even in our country and it definitely deserves more attention.
I have been waiting for this episode for quite a while. Thank you!
I have waited so long for some Czechoslovak special. Great job guys
Been waiting for a video about Czechoslovak Legions. Thank you for doing this.

Augh you guys are wonderful. You predict what we thirst for. It's glorious.

Great job TGW channel!
Something I like about the channel and it's community is the diversity, people from all over the world watch, almost as diverse as the war itself.
We like that too.
Another great video keep up the great work!!!
My great great grandfather who was a Czech immigrant to the U.S. and was a trainer for the us army he trained pilots in a J-N4 Jenny

Thank you for the awesome informative video! Concise & captivating
Thank you Indy!!
Excellent history lesson. I can't wait for the continuation.
Great teaser for the future special
Oh god! I did wait a long time for this!
This was a very informative video. I've heard about the Czechs that fought for Russia but not the rest of the allies. Nicely done.
Thanks for reminding this great piece of history. And by the way, great pronunciation of czech words and names.
Great special! thx. Shall look for that exciting story conclusion; all new info to me!
Excellent!

I want to thank you Indy and the Team for making this amazing, and interesting video about my country, its past and their accomplishments. Thank you very much and "Na shledanou." (Tra: Bye) 🇨🇿🏛
This is very interesting, I'm Czech but never really understood this situation with Czech legions, thank for your docs, I love your channel 🙂
Sorry should have said Czechoslovak legions, omlouvam se Slovenskym pratelum
Thank you/Dakujeme Great War crew. I raise a shot of slivovitz to you ...Nazdravie !
Battle of Zborov, only 6km from where I live. Makes you appreciate this channel even more so, coz I never knew about such a battle
No lie the foreshadowing near the end of the video had me at the edge of my seat, can't wait for that Special :D
I love how this channel talks about these topics so impartially, but still manages to do justice to the subject
Thanks for making this video, the Legionaries are proud part of our nation's history
Thank you very much Indy :) I am from Slovakia
Na památku našich padlých bratří v československé legii. Jejich statečnost bude zapamatována a jejich oběť nebyla marná.
Když vše vypadá ztracené, stoupáme jako fénix z popelu, abychom byli silnější než kdy jindy.
@Vilém Plaček Ale hovno. Keby sem nedošli komunisti bolo by to lepšie.
@Vilém Plaček Nie, ale ani my by sme nemali štát ani národ, z nás by boli Maďari a z vás Nemci
Ničíš pamiatku Masarykovi, Štefánikovi, Benešovi a všetkým čo prispeli k tvorbe republiky včetne legionárov. Zisti si niečo o prvej republike a potom hovor či by nám bolo lepšie.
@Vilém Plaček Nebola by
My great-grandfather was in the Czechoslovak Legion, he served in France. but somehow didn't returned home as he stayed in France, that's why I'm french :)
great video
This series exposes so many aspects of the war that one rarely (if ever) sees in the history books.
I had no idea! Interesting!
wow cant wait for part two
Late to this Special, but - My! Fascinating stuff that I was completely unaware of, which is unusual for me and WW 1.
i love this channel
Hey Indy and Gang, thank you for this really interesting episode! As a Slovak national myself and a guy interested in History, this was really awesome episode to watch for me to say at least, and I have learned a lot about these brave lads in Czechoslovak Legions as well. My question would be if you could do a special episode about General Milan Rastislav Stefanik as this guy was without any shreds of doubt the most important Slovak that has ever lived and basically thanks to him we have a nation. His Bio is extremely interesting as he was Astronomer, Pilot, General, Inventor, Diplomat, General, Minister, and so on :D ... So I am sure there would be a lot to cover and I would find it extremely interesting to see it from your point of view. Anyway, thanks for these cool episodes and I wish you and the team all the luck with future episodes.
best episode so far
Can´t wait for part 2
Awesome to see this, my family came from Slovakia which was part of the AH Empire at the time and I'm glad to see the Slovaks (and Czechs etc) get recognition
Češíííí a Slováciii, čaaaau :P
Nazdar.
Ahoj :D
Rota nazdar :D :D
Zdar!
Criss Drnek zdar!
My mothers mothers father was a legionare on eastern front. The picture of him is still hanging on the wall at my dads house. Unfortunatly I don't know the whole story since my mum has pased away in cancer a few years back. Zdar vsem slovanum, germanum i frantikum!
Totally Cool!
Wee, finally! \o/ I've always wanted to hear Indy pronounce the names :P Also holy crap, the moving image at 6:02 is creepy!
pretty cool, two persons with the same name as me in one episode. I do not think that has ever happened anywhere in my life. Plus its a great episode like usual
Hi Indi, brilliant work, so interesting and much clarity.
Please can you make the maps a bit bigger, as some areas are difficult to read, to see original locations, thanks.🎥🎓🌎🎓🎩
Can't wait for the new Czechoslovak vid coming soon!
Waiting for the second part :)
