    WARNING: Charcoal foundries can reach temperatures in excess of 1,000ºC, which is well above the melting point of hobbyists. This project should only be attempted with adequate knowledge and training, proper protective safety gear, and in a fire resistant area with adequate ventilation. The sparks flying from the foundry can ignite fires, and the fumes from burning dross can be toxic. Use caution and common sense. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

    Project inspired by:
    This foundry is an original design, which comes after months of experimenting, and over 10 different prototypes. The functionality is founded on ideas I collected while searching the internet for foundry designs.
    Background:
    For as long as I can remember, I've been intrigued by the idea of melting metal and making things with it. The problem has always been that it was out of reach or required really expensive equipment.
    In this project I experimented with 10 different prototypes, to develop a reusable backyard foundry that melts aluminum soda cans easily and safely. I tested different refractory recipes, different containers, different setting for blowing air, and different types of makeshift crucibles.
    I tried various ratios of portland cement, sand, perlite, plaster of paris, water, and even kitty litter. For containers, I experimented with clay pots, plastic buckets, no container, cinderblocks, and a galvanized steel pail.
    I ended up favoring the galvanized steel pail, and a mix of 50% plaster of paris, and 50% play sand, by volume, which was inspired by a video by NightHawkInLight "How to Make a Soup Can Forge" bit.ly/IBSoupCanForge
    Depending on where you get, or find, your materials the cost can range anywhere from $5-$25 per unit. With the materials I used, I was able to make 2 units for under $40 ($20 each). Even on the high end, this is probably one of the cheapest, reliable, backyard foundries that can be made.
    I used mine to melt soda cans, and extract the aluminum for future metal casting projects. All the soda cans came from a local recycling depot. I bought back 30 lbs from the depot to avoid having to drink gallons and gallons of soda. :) I stored the ingots in various forms, which you can see in the next video, and tried a cool technique for making a little sword by pouring liquid metal into a bucket of sand. I'm planning to make a project video on how to do that in the near future.
    Thanks for watching, and please share!! :)

    Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" Bud, just saying this out of concern for you health, Both the bucket and the two Ubolts you used for the handles to the lid (And the ubolts for your soda can mini bbq) are galvanized, which means it's got a layer of zinc over top, I am a master galvanizer, as well as a hobby level blacksmith, these traits do no DO NOT mix, Heating galvanized metal releases toxic metal vapors into the air, and can lead to heavy metal poisoning and all sorts of other medical complications, Plenty of welders are familiar with this, and sometimes exposure is worse than others, but this can be lethal, Especially if you pass out in the presence of the vapors and continously inhale, But even one good lungful can lead to days of diahrea, and seizure like tremors, And a dizzyness that feels like it might be for life.
    Don't take chances with your health, if you insist on using it anyways, wear a well fitting dust mask and sand it off with very coarse sandpaper, the particulates will be big enough to be trapped this way, whereas burning it off makes the particulates too small for all but the best filters.
    Other than that, you have made an excellent forge, And I am excited to see your molding process.
    Also, the use of a 1 inch black iron pipe is safe and very recommended as it is the metal closest to the coals.
    Thumbs up this comment for top comment so he, and anyone else thinking to take on this project sees the safety message.

    • @wyattedwards9178
      @wyattedwards9178 9 лет назад +1

      What happens when you sand it

    • @anvilbound705
      @anvilbound705 9 лет назад +5

      Smaller particulates means more exposure, It's the same logic for drugs and medicines alike, They have more surface area witch can then be absorbed more readily, sanding it is not great for you, but can be easily countered by trying not to breathe it, or using a mask.
      Which is why I recommended a coarse grit sandpaper. Zinc is a useful metal, and in small doses your body even needs it, but in your lungs or eyes it can be deadly.
      I've had about as much exposure as can be tolerated by a human of my size after a zinc explosion, Zinc burns are not pleasant, nor is heavy metal poisoning, Both of which I suffered through, but I still fear zinc vapors much much more.
      You can weld it in open air if you absolutely must, but a good lungfull can and will kill you.

    • @peanshor
      @peanshor 9 лет назад +1

      Would there be any issues if I substitute the bucket with a stainless steel stock pot? There would be a thicker layer of the plaster/sand mix. Also, what type of respirator mask would you recommend? Hopefully something that is sufficient with a low price tag.

    • @anvilbound705
      @anvilbound705 9 лет назад

      They come in packs with multiple, you don't need to get a crazy expensive one, Just the circle clothy ones are about three for a dollar, Or even a damp rag while sanding the galvanizing off, Just to avoid the dust.
      As for the stainless steel, It'll rust out at those temperatures eventually,(yes, even though it is stainless) but part of the process for the first firing is the curing of the plaster/sand and removing the moisture, putting a barrier in between that might lead to problems, but It might be fine, Assuming you meant to leave it in, and not just for forming the refractory

    My son and I traveled to Lowe’s yesterday and bought everything we needed and built this last night. It turned out great and most of all I spent quality time with him. It’s amazing how 30 cans made such a small amount of pure aluminum. Can’t wait to get more cans. Mixture was off a bit. Our sands might be different tho. Had to use more Plaster than Sand. Also, I found that a 1 1/4th” holesaw worked much better than the 1 3/8th” the video says. At 1 1/4ths of an inch the metal pipe thread right into the side of the bucket with more grip and can be screwed into for a better hold.

    Hey! Nice video but you forgot a very important detail!!!
    You say it does'nt matter if there still is soda inside the can but it actually does!
    If you put liquid inside molten metal, it will make steam bubbles and can explode, splashing some 660c° molten aluminium all around.
    So, if you want to melt aluminium safely, put cans in oven until there is no more liquid inside and wear a face protection.
    Please like or something, so people can see this and don't get injured please.

    I have a few suggestions for the next upgrade to the foundry. First, you can try adding Perlite to the refractory lining. it's expanded rock and is highly heat resistant. second, when you melt cans down the slag on the top has entirely too much aluminum still in it. you can use ordinary non iodized table salt as a flux to produce more aluminum from the cans

    • @rachelnacey1766
      @rachelnacey1766 7 лет назад +3

      Jaden CM no, it is like pouring water into hot grease on steroids. The water will instantaneously turn to vapor and if you are putting a can with moisture into the rest of the molten aluminum you can potentially have molten metal spatter violently up to 5 ft away, just like if you spill it on concrete which may have moisture.

    • @jadencm4862
      @jadencm4862 7 лет назад +1

    • @rachelnacey1766
