YES! Please allow Dynamic EQ Bass boost to be decoupled from the surround speaker boosting, in video games especially it does not work well and even for films it always sounds like overkill. I use to use Dynamic EQ before but now I have it off because of that reason.
Saw the new features but wasn't sure how best to take advantage. This cleared things up for me. Thanks!
With the experience of using Audyssey I think there are two ways to do it:
-You use the flat Reference curve without modification and apply Dynamique EQ for the boost (with reference level compensation at 0db or -5db)
or
-You choose an MV for example I listen at -13db almost all movies. then make a home curve, I use a tilt to make it sound good at -13db with a few db boost to the subwoofer. And set the Dynamic EQ to -15db. so that it activates only when the volume drops below -15db. so at -13 db it will not be active.
This method requires checking "Disabling auto-leveling
I will try a tilt of -0.5 because it follows the native curve of my speakers.
How much is your tilt set? for those who use it

I have been using a 1db Tilt since the day Multeq-X launched and originally added a 6db to the Subs to compensate for the drop in Subwoofer levels. With the recently added headroom expansion and the ability to deactivate auto-levelling for the Subs, I am finally happy with the 1db Tilt and don't have to add anything to the Subs anymore.
This is working perfectly for TV Shows, Movies and Games on my 7.2.6 system with no more fiddling around and micro managing required.
Need an Audyssey kindergarten version how to video for those of us who feel even more confused when attempting to watch these deeper dive videos. I have had the sample version of this on my laptop for longer than I have had my Denon X6700H but really have no idea how to make the most out of it so I am reluctant to pay $200 for the license.
You would get more results using the built in graphic EQ rather than tweaking in Audyssey then

Are we going to see an update with more selectivity around DEQ, ie turning off for surrounds and heights? Could be helpful for bass boost at lower volumes but the rears are too hot at lower volumes to the point where it clashes with the front stage.
I wish they would give us a heads up on when the sale will go off, $200 is too expensive, even $150 is too much.
Great video Joe. I’ve loved EQ-X since it’s first version and your videos have been immensely helpful! I’ve run it on a 4300h, SR7105, 6700h and now a 4800h. I just started with Dirac and want to A/B both systems but in terms of EQ-X it’s so capable, however I think many users aren’t taking full advantage of it

@@joentell on another note you mention you used a separate machine for Windows x86 and x64 apps. I’ve got both an Intel and M based MacBook Pro and installed Windows 11 Pro using boot camp with no issues and have no problems using EQ-X, REW and Dirac in the Windows 11 OS.

I have Denon x4700h and Marantz SR8015. I think this is great upgrade but only worthy in case they allow to use with multiple AVR for calibration.
I could calibrated my avr manually with REW better than the Audyssey.
Only Denon and Marantz are providing Audyssey with their avr but now they also offer Dirac Live.
Why any one should upgrade Audyssey over Dirac Live.

So weird what the custom curve implementation is, without disabling that feature. You’d never know the midpoint bass is being cut unless you measured it. The point of having powerful software is so you don’t have to spend all that time making it perfect on your own with measurements outside the software. Glad it’s well understood now, so you can trust the desired target curve is being implemented correctly.
I had no idea what was happening to the bass prior to this. I just knew it wasn't right so I didn't try to do any custom curves for bass in the app
@@joentell so I checked the override box on all speakers like suggested in the video. I then applied a house curve from 80hz down to 20hz with a 6dB boost. This is in addition to a 3dB tilt about the 1khz 0dB point. Dynamic EQ off. It sounds good. You can tell the previous generation software was sinking the 50-80hz dB while the lower end is boosted. Explains why movies were loud and music was lacking. So when adjusting sub trims I kept having to fight between music and movies. Now it seems good! This was a big update I think…
Does anyone have any example target curves/tilt curves that they like and want to share?
Not going to lie; it is hard to take advice from a company that has Midrange Compensation on by default and charges you to be able to turn that garbage off. I use Audyssey and love it, but I am on my 6th Marantz over the last 15+ years, and only in the previous 2 was I lucky enough to find on the internet to buy the app and turn it off. What I heard after I turned it off was so profound that I instantly got angry that nowhere in my Marantz is a setting that tells me that it was on or gives the option to turn it off without spending $20 AFTER I just spent 2k.
I hear you. I don't get why it's on by default either. Not a choice I would make.
In Small room maybe need to really down the 10hz bass gain if you wanna the very flat bass,

Do you know the impact of headroom expansion if no subwoofer is configured? I played around with it yesterday, Audyssey wants to boost some frequencies and sets a headroom expansion of 3 and 3.5 to the front speakers. Therefore the trim is raised by 3 and 3.5 (total values +5 for FL and +5.5 for FR). Other speakers get no headroom expansion. But doesn´t this cause an issue in the total balance? The fronts are much louder in this setup by raising the trim, or?
This should be included with my Denon X6700h. You'd think for the $2500 I already spent, it would be and I don't believe I'm the only one that feels this way...
So the mobile app I purchased doesn't actually do what it should. I'm not trusting audyssey again. You can easily add your house curve to the json and just boost your sub trim. I'm a bit tired of having to do all this fiddling to just get simple tone controls.

Yeah, I hear you. That mobile app was not made by Audyssey. It was made by Denon and Marantz (D+M)

Audyssey XT32 is useful but if you have the Cinema 40 or X4800H (And anything above, of course) you need to invest in the official 100 USD MultiEQ-X Mic and the 200 USD MultiEQ-X software (Especially now with the 1.6.X version) You wont believe how much better the measurement is. If you only invest 300 USD more, you get something many people say is superior to Dirac Live and lets your speakers sing a league above. Best 300 USD you can invest in your home theater. Do not skimp on it!!!

Direct/Puré Direct doesn't allow the receiver to use the sub, like in a 2.1 stereo setup. At least not on my 2400H receiver.

Yes it does. Change LFE to Main + LFE.
Nobody or at least very few people need a mac version of Multeq-X LOL. Everyone who has access to a mac typically has a windows machine lying around somewhere. If you dont know how to run a VM on mac then you probably shouldn't be playing with this software either. I bet the percentage of people with windows machines who have a spare mac hanging around is a much much smaller number. LOL

MultEQ-X couldn't run on a VM on Apple Silicon last time I tried. It needed to be on an Intel Mac. The newest Macs are a different architecture.

@@pumpituphomeboy I would rather not have to use that though. It's 2023. I'm developing an app that's cross-platform and even works on mobile. I'm sure our team is much smaller than Audyssey's.

I don’t understand this statement saying that nothing is done from 80 - 500 hz. MultEQ mobile app allows you to modify the adjustments to a certain frequency range. Many guides suggest limiting correction up to 500hz. Did I mishear and this is applied using the AVR calibration vs MultEQ mobile app? Is this documented anywhere?
Did you watch this in its entirety? We explained what happens when adjusting the bass target on the Editor app. Audyssey by default level matches around 1khz for the main speakers and 80hz for the sub. So if you make the bass higher at 80hz using the target curve on the editor app, it will compensate by lowering the gain on the sub so 80hz matches 1khz on the mains. MultEQ-X allows you to disable that behavior. If you don't want to buy MultEQ-X, you can adjust the curve on the Editor app, but make sure to compensate for the level matching by turning up the sub gain.
Is it possible to follow-up on the answer to disabling the surround boost mentioned at 54:00? Really wondering if this is coming or not.
I think the sourrand boost its becouse when audyssey set the level speakers, it does to have exactly the same spl level in every speakers, the thing is that our ears shape, make the sound in front of us more audible than the ones on the back, they don't worl as a microphone works (360° same level), so that boost helps having the feeling to have the same level in every speakers. Before audyssey I always was setting +1db in my rear speakers.
Dynamic EQ is awesome, the whole point of the feature is that when you can't have consistent volume levels it will still make the tonality consistent. Treble boost is required for this effect, you can see it in the equal-loudness contour (or Fletcher-Munson curve). Weird hearing from an Audyssey employee that he doesn't like it. Trying to replicate the boost with a house curve will only make it sound right on a certain volume level, when you have to dial it down the bass again sounds dull.
It would be a real shame if they decided not to give us the option to disable the surround boost. It totally ruins gaming! I have to turn Dynamic EQ off during gaming otherwise when I spin the camera I can hear everything get way louder behind me.
I can see why someone might like it. I don't. I want the bass to decrease when I reduce the volume. My brain understands that's how volume works and I'm ok with it. If I want better bass, I have the luxury to just turn it up. In a car, I need to use the loudness function sometimes, because the bass is just lost in the road/engine noise.
The problem is that DynamicEQ's sliding scale is reliant upon the content being mastered for reference level (where DEQ is essentially disabled). If it isn't, the scale is inherently wrong. So if, for instance, the content is mastered so that it needs a 8dB bump in volume (as often happens on streaming), DEQ doesn't have a way of knowing the content's deviation from reference. Worse, the DEQ offsets you can apply are only for content mastered at TOO HIGH a level, not too low. That's why people hate Disney mixes that do this.
DEQ made a lot of sense in the DVD days when content was being mastered at the right level fairly consistently. As it is now, even physical media is mastered at wildly different levels, with no metadata (like DialNorm back in the day) to tell the system what the actual mastering level was so DEQ can compensate.
Just use a different preset? One with your curve and one without any custom curve, etc.?

@@pb24dagrk My bass sounds so much better with EQ head room. Not even using a curve. I don’t feel the need for dynamic EQ as much. My test material is the race scene from Ready Player One.
Two years roughly after the introduction of the software and still Audyssey can't explain succinctly what are the additional features that a user have that make $200 difference. Still waiting for an actual useful tutorial. The criticism is NOT for you Joe! It's for Audyssey. Your videos are in general brilliant and very useful. Keep up the good work 👍
Wow, it's been 2 years already? If you know how to make correction filters in REW, then you can use your AVR as a MiniDSP. The app I'm working on makes that easy to do without REW, but it's not quite ready yet. That's why I haven't made a video about MultEQ-X yet since I have an easier/better method I'm working on.
@@joentell Yes I know you are making an app and we are waiting desperately for it! 😁 I am using REW quite a lot but as you said it is extremely time consuming when you try to implement filters etc. with AVR. Regarding the need of a useful tutorial I mentioned didn't mean it to come from you but when a company rep comes to "explain" the usefulness of a $200 product someone would expect to understand immediately what additional power the users have. Similar video was uploaded by audioholics with same outcome. Bottomline is, please finish your app!!😁
@@HarryM2022 Here it is. If you already use REW to make correction filters, you can import that into MultEQ-X. You cannot do that otherwise. You need to exclude the measurements taken so that you can just use your AVR as a filter bank. Think about it as a huge MiniDSP. You must do the measurements for each speaker, but then exclude the measurements taken, otherwise Audyssey will make an automatic correction to flat first. We don't want that. We want a blank slate.

So what you are saying is using the iOS and Android app and all the things I learned about that with curve is worthless and messes up the overall curve if you level upp the curve for more base? I´m new to Audyssey and Denon, used Onkyo on my last AVR. What I don't like is that Audyssey is so short on base level and seems like you need software for 200$ do get more punch in your system. As it is now I feel like my speaker system output half of the power it can do.
For us that are new and novice to this, when can we just use the app and what is the best practice for certain solutions.
On my last Onkyo AVR I could set higher or lover bass and tremble on every channel independently, is there such a feature that I missed with Denon and Audyssey?

Yes, the $20 app does not do the curves for the sub correctly. It's crazy if you ask me. You're right to be confused because if something doesn't work as expected, it adds another layer of complexity. It's already complicated enough with everything working as expected. If you're ever in the market to have someone do a calibration for you, I offer remote calibrations. It's expensive, so I understand if it's not for everyone. joentell.com/booking
Can you use a UMIK 1 with MultEQX or do I need to purchase their calibrated mic?
You can just use the mic that comes with your AVR. If you want to use REW for a manual calibration, you can use a UMIK-1. There's no Audyssey calibration for other mics.
@@joentell hopefully I’ve been doing it right where it doesn’t mess with the curve. I’ve been pretty happy with how it sounds but there’s always the question, Could it sound better? Let me know what you think. After Audyssey does it’s thing, I run measurements through my laptop and REW and adjust any speakers that are off to 75 dB and then I bump my subs by 10-12dB in the AVR for that extra boost. I think I got that info from watching your videos with the other RUclipsrs. Love your content!

Digital room correction specialist Mitch Barnett argues that you need to apply psychoacoustic smoothing and frequency dependent windowing to your measurements in order to correct for the right things in the response and for it to sound right to our ears in the end. Will those features come?

This is so frustrating.
The main Audyssey guy says “we hear all these complaints about losing bass, and I agree…my system sounds so much better when I added this tilt.”
It’s a consensus that the 0 reference Audyssey curve doesn’t sound good.
Just add the “tilt” curve as an option to the standard Audyssey software: “reference, flat, tilt.”
Audyssey assumes or intends for users to use DEQ
@@pb24dagrk This is the conclusion I came to also. I don't use it though. I've interviewed Chris Kyriakakis formerly at Audyssey. I believe he was one of the inventors if not the inventor of that feature.
The app I'm working on determines the correct house/target curves based on the speakers, the room, and seating distance. I've never seen a calculated target curve that is flat. They're not exactly the Harman target either, but most are more similar to Harman than they are to flat.

I just wish the manufacturer, whom I paid $1,600 towards would stop being so stubborn and realize that they should install a curve “for the people” instead of constantly saying “reference, reference, reference” while their customers and engineers say “that just doesn’t sound good, where is the bass” after completing their auto correction.
Or at least have an option for “DEQ bass only” since the engineer also said “I don’t use it because it lifts the highs as well.” Well that’s why your customers don’t like to use it as well.
Again just frustrating that they seem to hear and understand all the issues with it, but their fix is “spend more to fix it yourself.” At the price they demand, units with their MutiEX-32 installed should be able to do it automatically.

What does the enable precise trims do?
It uses the filters to level match with slightly more precision than the 0.5dB available on the trims.

I use my software in conjunction with MultEQ-X, but I can use it in various ways with other software and other products as well.
do it with the real equipment. and show how it is done the easier way. enough with this tour.
So still shit still not worth $200 and still cant handle real subwoofers. Yes I know the "average" user has shit subwoofers- but 10HZ is a joke for my setup.
It just means it can't correct below 10hz, but it won't limit your subs if they can go lower
Brought my system to the “Next Level”. Sounds great with the new options, not even using a custom curve.
