Japan is very different to the US. Japan is ruled by law and order at a different level. There's the confucian appreciation for order, combined with the buddhist and shinto appreciation for all things nature land and sea, combined with the consideration given to the greater good. Not saying Japan is perfect, but the US would have to jump through many hoops in order to achieve similar societal conditions that manifest in clinically clean streets. What you guys can do is to demand for change and inspire people to get educated and to better themselves. Demand from your elected officials that you want to live in a more pleasant environment. Start social initiatives. A lot of urban renewal projects have happened in US cities over the last decade so it is possible to push for even more and better.
