Honestly, I really think Sondheim wrote this for Oscar Hammerstein. Stephen's parents never loved him and his mom actually told him "my biggest regret was having you." Oscar was his mentor and basically his father. When he died of stomach cancer, Sondheim was heartbroken. He kept writing/composing and in an interview Sondheim said if he could see Hammerstein again he would say, "aren't you proud of me?" So sweet
I think what I love the most about this absolutely stellar performance was the gazes of adoration and comfort the others provided her when she resumed her seat--everyone in that theater was moved that evening.
Not only does Ms. Peters perform what can only be called the definitive version of this song here, but out performs almost any human who will ever take to a stage. Brava, Ms. Peter's; you are too talented for any of us to ever even comprehend.
You know, I think Bernadette Peters is a "singing actress." She doesn't have the best vocal strength, breath control, etc. But 1) Her voice is itself "one of a kind"--no one else sounds like her. 2) She performs the character throughout any song she sings. That's why she's great!!
This song is from the musical Merrily will roll along composed in 1981.Bernadette was bon in 1948 so she was 62 in this video. She sang it very well but I prefere Barbara Cook s performance in many performances of the song.

Wow! I didn't know any of that. Thank you.
The tears standing in her eyes, I believe, hurt for her late husband. My heart broke during that performance. ❤❤
How could you not have a Stephen Sondheim concert without the wonderful and the amazingly talented Bernadette peters
This performance was only 5 years after Bernadette lost her husband. I'm surprised she could control herself as she did.

The performance shows her inner grief and the grief of the character. She is a powerhouse!

I play this song. It is really well written. So beautiful and Bernadette so in tune with it. And it makes me cry, and not a day goes by...

A song and a singer that transcends greatness. Unable to be matched, or even close

Superb. Simply stunning performance.
She is remarkable
Hey, does anyone know who arranged this version? And where I can get hold of it for a concert performance? Thanks :)
wow
Hard to believe she was 67 here she didn't look a day over 27-28
The one person who didn't like this is a smuck!
Damn.
Sondheim's lyrics seems to just get to the bottom of it all.

I bet Steve Martin regrets everyday that he did not marry her.
What musical is this from?
Connor Lachmanec Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along.
