    Hi Alice! orchid advice: absolutely no soil! You'll suffocate and rot the roots. Phalaenopsis orchids are epiphytes, think of all their roots as aerial roots. Your best bet is a mix of orchid bark and moss. Let it dry out before watering.Also do not get water on the leaves. You can cause crown rot, only water the substrate.

    I am here for you being an orchid girl over a hoya girl. I’ve been an orchid girl for years and have recently gotten into anthuriums but orchids will always have my heart.

    LOL, Falling down the orchid hole is just like the anthurium hole LOL. I have over 100 lol. Just be careful orchid roots are different. They need lots of air, no soil!!!! That suffocates their roots. And Phals don't like wet feet. For Phals when watering you cannot get water down in their stem, that will cause stem rot. Just water the bark. Have fun and in the fall offer a cool down to your orchid at night and it will start growing it flower spike for the spring. It's like watching babies grow. So exciting!

    There are a lot of cute mini orchids that don't take a lot of space and are easy to grow. I personally like Dendrobium cuthbertsonii hybrids and Tolumnias. I'm happy you're getting into orchids !!

    congrats on getting the P. schilleriana! I love the rose fragrance on them
    About Huperzias, the reason they’re so hard is because they can only grow from two meristems, the base of the plant (which is tiny) or the tips of the growing branches. They’re really picky about their moisture level and tend to want to grow drier than my Anthuriums. Once you rot out or dry up the tiny base, your only option is to get the tips of the branches and lay them down onto moss to make new plants which can take 6+ months, they physically can’t create new tissues from the side of their stems unless part of it comes from the base of the plant.

    Such a pleasure to see you go into orchid, i fall for it 4 months ago and oh boy with anthurium its a mess ahah !
    Basic thing if you want your phalaenopsis schileriana to thrive, it's an epiphyte plante, so no soil, no never, a simple mix of bark and moss is enough, be sure to pressure the orchid nice inside the pot, you need to be able to grab the orchid + the pot without everything crashing down after the repot.
    If you want some bloom, youll need the temperature to vary at least from 2 celcius between day and night, grow light help a lot creating this transition in temperature don't hesistate to use them on phalaenopsis.
    Schilerian also work super well monted on cork inside a cabinet, but you'll see in time.
    Can't wait for you to fall for all of them, if you like phalaenopsis don't hesistate to check : Philippinensis, Stuartiana, Sanderiana, Bronze maiden, bellinea, violacea, tetrapsis ... avoid the one from China for now they're cold growing one and lose their leaf (it's the only root and bloom phal you were talking about)

    • @thomaspl8431
      @thomaspl8431 2 месяца назад +1

      And please when you watter a monopodial orchid like a phalenopsis do not water the crown (the part in the middle where the new leaf come out) because water is not suppose to sit here i mother nature since orchid like phal are growing upside down so water is naturally put out, since here it still straight if water sit in the crown your phal while caught crown rot and die, if you wee water inside the crown poor it out with a tissue paper. Best !

    Alice, I 10000% recommend you to look up MissOrchidGirl's videos... she is just a great watch and has a lot of information for beginners... I'm also getting into orchids and my tip for you is to first look into what species are suitable for your temperatures bc that is the determining factor as to whether or not you can have certain species like masdevallia, Dendrobium Nobiles, Cattleya, Brassavolas, etc... my personal favorites that I can grow in my environment are brassavolas, Ryncholaelias and their hybrids and my Nr 1 wishlist orchid is the Myrmecatavola Frances Fox 🤩🤩 look it up, it genuinely looks like a magical, mythical fire Lilly 🤩🤩🤩

    I only got my orchid to bloom after putting it closer to a poorly insulated window during winter. I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure they need the temps to drop a bit to trigger blooms.

    Oh!! I think I have your table solution! Look up puzzle tables. They actually made to be put on a table so they have short legs. They also have drawers on the sides that are flat but you could likely put your potting mat in there and maybe some tools. They also have an edge on them so if you do tilt them up the soil and substrate would not fall off!! .. I'm actually looking for one myself. I did the same thing with my great white jar and I keep refilling it. Also I taped the top so only about half the holes are open because it comes out so fast😅.

    My local and fave plant nursery had some black widow/Michelle seeds so I bought some and they are green and plump. Got one for myself and one for my daughter. I also purchased a cebu blue aurea, an Epipremnum variegated mutant and some El Chico seedlings (they are soooo cute!) I’m super excited about my Anthurium though.
    Love your new orchid…I only have 5 in my collection…my mini orchid finally bloomed for me! My suggestion for or bids is to fertilize at every watering. Water weakly weekly.
