  • The timelapse technique is known even to people who are far from photo and video shooting. It is enough to recall colorful videos with a quick but smooth change of picture, where dawn replaces sunset, and the movement of clouds or stars in the sky is accelerated so that it is easy to notice all the color transitions. In advertising, we often see how skyscrapers are erected in seconds, and in science films - how a butterfly is formed from a chrysalis. All these techniques have been successfully used in cinema for a long time, and recently have become available to the ordinary user of photographic equipment.
    Interestingly, initially timelapse appeared not at all as a video style, but as a result of photographing. Such a fabulous format is obtained when several frames with a certain interval between them are formed into a separate video clip. The interval between frames is set by the photographer himself. You can shoot the starry sky all night to fit the resulting starfall into a five-second video, or you can combine several dozen frames into a video of falling foliage. If you remember the era of videotapes, you probably know what a video looks like when fast-forward. This is what a video shot in the timelapse format looks like. The main difference is only that initially timelapse is slow motion with an exact number of frames per second.
    The timelapse technique itself was invented at the beginning of the XX century by one of the pioneers of cinema. Its creator- director Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès, was a lover of special effects and spectacular shots. What is one of his films "Journey to the Moon" worth! Today, the name of the progenitor of timelapse is almost forgotten, but his invention is experiencing a rebirth, and with the development of digital technologies, it has not only become an attribute of professional filming, but also found its place in the arsenal of amateur photographers, artists, bloggers, designers and other representatives of creative professions.
    In modern cinema, timelapse technology is used in full-length films, commercials and promotional materials.
    Timelapse helps to realize a variety of artistic effects:
    show the transience of time, for example, the process of growing up heroes, building construction, changing seasons;
    capture rare natural phenomena: northern lights, starfall, sunsets and sunrises, in an easy-to-perceive form;
    convey the bustle of the city: the movement of pedestrians, cars.
    In marketing, timelapse has become one of the most popular tools among the masters of the beauty industry, design, and bloggers. With the help of this technique, you can tell whole stories, conduct excursions and room tours, show the process of working on a project.
