▶ NORDMARKSPORTFELD KIEL
The Nordmarksportfeld, colloquially known as "Norder," is a multifunctional urban sports and event complex located in the Ravensberg district of Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein. Spanning approximately 31 hectares, the site hosts various sports facilities and clubs. The grass-covered sports and event area is shaped like an equilateral triangle with sides about 500 meters long. During the Kiel Week, the Balloon Sail event is held here.
The Nordmarksportfeld was established in 1907 under the direction of Ferdinand Hurtzig as a municipal sports and playground. In its early years, it was used by many Kiel sports clubs, including Holstein Kiel until the construction of the Holstein-Stadion in 1911. Over time, it served not only as a sports field and horse racing track but also as a racetrack. From 1908 to 1927, the site was used by the Association for Motor Airship Navigation in the Nordmark (VML) as an airfield, which included the construction of an airship hangar in 1910. The first airshow in the German Empire was organized by the Kiel Traffic Association on June 28, 1908, during the Kiel Week at Nordmarksportfeld. The sole competitor, Danish aviator Jakob Ellehammer, received a prize of 5,000 gold marks for a 47-meter flight with his aircraft.
During the Nazi era, the Norder served as a rally ground for NSDAP events. Adolf Hitler spoke to 50,000 people at the Nordmarksportfeld during a paid event in April 1932 as part of the closing rally for the Prussian state election. He gave another speech at the same venue on May 7, 1933.
The airship hangar, completed in 1910, was an 85-meter-long timber frame structure built by the Kiel construction company Johannes Buchard Wwe. for the VML. Initially, it served as an assembly hangar for the airship "Suchard" and was used by both Zeppelin and Parseval airships. The topping-out ceremony for the hangar was celebrated on July 16, 1910, and it was inaugurated and named Nordmarkhalle on September 24, 1910. The construction costs amounted to 80,000 marks. In the spring of 1912, the hangar was extended to 170 meters, increasing its volume to 68,000 cubic meters on a floor area of 2,975 square meters. The hangar was dismantled between March and September 1917.
Over the years, Nordmarksportfeld has hosted numerous concerts and events, contributing to its reputation as a key venue in Kiel.
