    There are a few unique units like Janissaries around the world. The name is very popular. They were the inspiration for Mozart to compose "Turkish March". What about how well do you know about the life of Janissaries? Would you like to see one? This is a story from one of them. Fatjon or Mehmed, whatever you call.

    They're talking about child slavery here, but what does that have to do with child slavery? If they were to send you to the United States right now to study in top schools, wouldn't you accept it? This is something like him.

      yeah and if a family has only boy they wouldt took the boy only the youngest child was taken(its probably better for the family because there was a food shortage at the time and no birth control)

      It was neither slavery nor voluntary. It was basically a conscription system if the family was poor not to able to pay their taxes. In return they were exempted from tax until the child gets retired(KIA would be considered "martyred" and family will be exempt for life), paid enough to buy a couple of cattle or few sheeps, or to be able to just afford to pay their bondage to their landlord and buy their freedom if the family was in some form of serfdom or contract, however it was by no means voluntary in most cases, it was forced and basically was like "we conscript your kid, we pay you in return and you have no say on that". Neither romanticising nor demonising historical facts will get us nowhere. Stop doing either...

    Interesting fact : All families were eager to send their sons to the Yeniceri Ocak especially poor families because becoming a Yeniceri (Janissary) meant guaranteed succesful career. The Yeniceri's were mainly recruited from Balkans and Anatolian families. Some families, although poor, even tried to bribe recruiters to take their son as Yeniceri.

    Janissaries and Concubines from European countries contributed greatly to the Ottoman Empire and whether they managed to attain high ranks or not is immaterial. Whether they were loyal or betrayed the empire later on, their service to the empire is monumental to say the least.

    • @juliie007
      @juliie007 2 года назад +14

      The Janissaries flourished because the recruits were offered opportunities that they could never have hoped to access in their Native countries. Europe had a caste system with the aristocracy at the top especially Eastern Europe where serfdom was implemented. If you were born a serf you had very few economic opportunities and you were basically indentured to your feudal lord. The ottoman’s rejected this notion of aristocratic primogeniture even refrained from marrying noble women and preferred concubines from conquered states who would be more loyal to the dynasty and not advance the political advances of their families. The Ottoman Empire began to decline when the Ottoman dynasty decided to adopted the European custom of primogeniture.

They only had opportunities to participate in a hierarchy that benefited the Ottoman Empire, they were still denied true self determination and denied the love of their families for the sake of the Ottoman state. Serfdom sucked but slavery is slavery, don’t pretend sex slaves or slave soldiers should be grateful for being taken from their families due to “economic opportunities”. You’re also obfuscating the horrific treatment of all the regular slaves who had no such opportunities with many enduring fates worse than death.

Sounds like kidnaping and forced indoctrination to me. Sure, those Christian families were poor. But what other choice did they have? @@baranyldz2511 that’s the difference between slavery in Ottomans vs Europeans. Many Janissaries were later content to join the Ottoman Empire because they were offered opportunities that would have otherwise been inaccessible to them as much of Europe was under aristocratic primogeniture meaning only nobles had access to resources to better themselves. Most of these boys came from Eastern Europe where the strictest caste system of serfdom was implemented and if they had stayed they would have been indentured to their feudal lord all their lives. The Ottoman Empire began to decline when it adopted the European custom of primogeniture. Instead of the strongest sultan leading the empire the position was now inherited and the golden cages were created
