    Welcome! There is a sizable Singaporean population here and probably you'll bump into them soon enough. If exploring and going on long road-trips is your thing, you'll love it. To be fair, life in Sydney vs Singapore isn't really too much different. Work-life balance is but a myth in many quality jobs and yes, cost of living is through the roof here; may sound surprising but many holding similar roles as I do back in SG have a higher disposable income. Over time, you'll also learn of the quirks and inefficiencies in the system Enjoy your time here and may it be an enriching experience.

    Enjoy the good life.There will be things that will not be perfect, but just remember there is no place on earth that is perfect.
    I did my high school and university in the states. Met my husband in school, and after we graduated, we moved to scandinavia where he comes from. I have absolutely no regrets not coming home to Singapore.....ok, maybe for the food. When I hear my friends are burnt out, and their kids are burnt out, it just makes me happy being where I am. So enjoy this amazing adventure and opportunity.

    However, doing it when you're young(er) just hits different, especially with the freedom and flexibility to make adjustments as necessary to adapt. So kudos to you both on being able to make this important decision for the both of you and I wish you both nothing, and nothing but the best. Thanks for the inspiration and candid banter. Godspeed!

    Good choice to move to Australia! Sydney can be slightly more stressful compare to other cities in australia like Perth, Adelaide, Horbart and Gold Coast - but it also has bigger employment opportunities. Saying that, all major cities in Australia are beautiful, laid back, comfortable, clean, safe, accessible and green.

    I'm a resident here. Felt like AU is oversold as a very nice place to be through this video. However, one can see why they are excited because they are on a temporary visa and everything seems new and nice on the surface at the start of a new relationship. I mean wait till they migrate here permanently, get a proper job, pay taxes, have a house and a mortgage - the realities will sink in. Honestly, forsaking good careers in Singapore to come here might be a bad mistake. Sydney is livable but very expensive. While there are many pros listed in this video, they failed to see the large bucket of cons. Contrary to what they think Sydney and Au generally is still not as safe. That is why people seldom come out after dark or late.

    • @EdandRach
      @EdandRach  Год назад +43

      We all come from different backgrounds, have different needs and priorities in life. What you deem as a “good career” in Singapore may not be the same for us and may not suit our personal preferences. We also have had to pay taxes, houses etc in Singapore. Every city has its cons. We decided to choose our hard. We respect your perspective and how you view the world, we are sure you’ve had your own experiences - as do we our own. If we learn later on that AU doesn’t suit us, then that’s life. (: It’s full of change. We are free to pivot. Thank you for sharing your opinions, we know they are valid. As of now, we are extremely happy to be here and we are living our lives here to the fullest. (:

    There are certainly pros and cons to each country. Whilst Australia has a lot natural beauty and space, the cost of living is higher than Singapore. Most importantly if you require anything that involves labour the cost os higer than Singapore (eg eating out or getting a tradesperson to do something for you). Theres also the huge issue of taxation, which is much higer in Australia. However to balace that you get in return medicare (if you are a permanent resident or citizen). For people with families, the cost of private schools are comparable to Singapore but for PRs public school are accessible and fees are low. Class sizes are smaller as well with a max of 30 vs 40 in Singapore schools. At the end of the day, it comes down to what you value more of - if earnings (after tax) is more important, then stay in Singapore. If lifestyle and healthy living is more important then Australia is the way. I am looking at permanent migration aspect rather than temporary on a 462 visa. For young couples like this one, definitely 462 visa to get a taste of life there on a temporary basis would be a good idea.

      Here is my response to what they said.
      1. Sydney Australia is very hot in summer & cold in autumn & colder in winter. It's only cool in Spiring.
      2. How often are they going to spend their time at amazing trail? Singapore doesn't have amazing trails or parks, is it?
      3. Okay, I agree Australia has great coffee but not cheap okay? Kopi in Singapore is just as good & cheap.
      4. Let's not talk about work-life balance yet. Do they even think they can get an acting job in Australia as a non white person with a Singaporean accent? But be prepared to take up odd jobs if they don't have other professional qualifications to fall back on besides acting.
      5. Agree Australia is diverse & and multicultural. So is Singapore. But white is still the majority over there.
      6. In Australia, the utility bill, dining out (no cheaper than hawker food) & public transport is not cheap. The only thing cheaper than Singapore is buying a car, and the rental. Personal tax rate is high.
      7. If you are not an Australian citizen, then healthcare is not cheap, so I hope they have health insurance that cover them while they live in Australia.
      I bet you, they will return back to Singapore once they have run out of money if they are there just to bump around unless they both secured a decent paid job to sustain and live long enough to eventually apply for PR in Australia. In any case, all the best to them, and it's okay to return to Singapore if they have enough. At least they get to experience it & and give it a try.

    How long did it take from the point you decided to migrant to applying the visa to arriving in Sydney ?

    • @EdandRach
      @EdandRach  Год назад +4

      We took just a few weeks to decide! My visa took 2 weeks to get approved but Edwin’s took 2 months - the approval times vary each person, but from my research, most people get it within 2 weeks! Once we got the visas approved, we flew out about a month later. (: - Rachel ❤️

    I visited Sydney at the beginning of winter. I don’t really like the short daylight. When it’s 5+ pm, it looks like 7+ pm. I didn’t really feel safe walking on the streets in the evening. Streets in the suburbs are quiet. Food and transportation are expensive. I was verbally abused loudly at a shopping mall by a young man who was with his group of friends. l didn’t even want to turn back to look at his face. Plenty of graffiti on the train station platform walls and on the walls of some buildings. I didn’t find anything that l can consider cheap there. Sales staff are polite. I think the residents know the answer to the question on whether or not help can be expected readily from fellow train passengers when there’s harassment. The non-Asians are comparatively bigger in size, so it’s best to avoid any trouble.

    When Singaporeans decide to relocate, there will always be a number of them saying how bad those countries are. Never even seen an inside of an aeroplane but ever so ready to come up with all these negstivity. Why? Too much of Kit Chan "Home" is it. We are already 3rd class here. Might as well get our lives sorted elsewhere. 😏
