- Sea Bass on Lures video - Winter bass 3 Doubles up to 18lb!!
With less than a week to fish I couldn’t have expected a better trip! I arrived with big seas and had some fun fishing on the south coast before the big winter swells dropped giving me a couple of sessions on the west coast where I managed to land 3 doubles the largest being an18lb monster and my biggest bass in many years! I do enjoy catching any bass including schoolies, but there's defiantly something special about hooking into and having contact with a big old wily bass and seeing swim off!
The 18lb bass was caught on the new airbrushed Samson Stealth Glide.
This is a new lure to the Samson range ideal for night fishing early morning/evenings and generally a slower retrieve lure!
The other doubles were caught on the Samson long casting 21g Bomb and the Mullet Enticer Minnow 50g long casting lure!

Fish of a lifetime for here around Gower. I’ve been fishing for over 30yrs and have only caught one double figure at just under 13lb and I felt fortunate, yet you must feel honoured with your catches.😁👍
thanks, yes that was an amazing trip, I think 3 doubles in a couple of days!
Fishing sounds good in Gower! 👍
Absolutely unbelievable!!
Hope your hands ok?
Got worried when you went in!!
Loved the video and have a lovely Christmas.
Mums so special X
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it, have a lovely christmas holidays!
Hi Grant, I'm Portuguese living in UK for 20 years, I live in Bournemouth, Dorset. Great video, I came from the North of Portugal, Matosinhos precisely, and I used to fish all year around for bass and sea bream in the somer. Seeing your video bring me back to some memories I keep with me, good memories fishing in the North Coast. Thanks for sharing your incredible catching abilities, it's not easy to fish at the winter in Portugal. I keep fishing in uk and I still love it, is not the same, the UK South Coast is different, the Adrenaline is different.
Carry on to post your catchs because I love it.
Regards
Hi Fernando, thats good to hear! Yes ive had a lot of fun fishing over the last 25 plus years for bass in Portugal. Although I now live in Switzerland im always feeling at home when im back fishing in Portugal! Hope you manage to get over and fish that wild coastline some more soon! cheers!!
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 Last time Ive fish in portugal was in 2019 before covid, in Setúbal, south side from Lisbon, and yes, I enjoyed to fish on the calm Sado River and on the coast, good recent memories.

Fantastic Grant, well done. A world away from the still calm waters of Luce bay where I normally fish.

... just to let U know Grant...it was U who inspired me to buy a sea spin set to fish for seabass a couple of years ago:) U should have smtng in your blood to inspire a flyfisherman to do spin fishing in the sea. Now, thanks to U, I do both, depending on conditions and location. Thank you sir

Fantastic hard core fishing as ever Grant. I know you return the vast majority of your fish but still great to see some footage of one of them going back
Cheers, I almost had footage of returning the 18lber but i put him down thinking I would help get him going, turned round for my other go pro and he was swimming off ha!
Ciao Grant, guardo i tuoi video e rimango folgorato dalla bellezza delle tue catture.

Hi thanks, this is in Portugal!
Grazie a te Grant 👍🎣
Brilliant fishing 🎣👍. I feel your pain with the treble, happened to me last year, had to push it through the skin and crush the barb to get it out. Ouch
thank! Yes you always hope its the last time! Ive had one to the bone that I needed to get cut out but, managed to push the others through
Parabéns. Nice Robalos you got down here in my town.
Lets go get some next time you around south coast, i want to try your lures.

Stunning fishing mate, love your work, where you fish and the methods you use are very similar to what I do here in South Australia . Those bass are similar to our Australian Salmon in regards to the locations and lures used etc.All the best to you mate.
thanks a lot! yes caught Kahawai (think its Australian Salmon) in New Zealand, good fun!
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 Yes same fish, have caught them here 10 to 12 pound at that size they pull like a freight train.Awesome fun from the surf or rocks.Cheers.

hope its the last time, but doubt it
Absolutely wonderful grant , well done on that beast of a bass
cheers Mike, glad you enjoyed it mate!
Well done Grant some fantastic big Bass again. I’ve had a treble through the thumb but only on a 5lb fish. Makes it worth it though when you end up with an 18lb er. 😅👏👏👏👏
Thanks 👍 yes well worth it ha
Great video, I'm using pearl coloured surface patchenkos for Pollock in Co Clare Ireland. I must set up a GoPro to record the footage, the Pollock clear the water to take the patchenkos...im still trying to catch a bass but I'll plug away at it a fish is a fish 🤣👍👍
Been following since your trip to cape cod , hopefully I get the chance to try fishing Europe 🤘🏽
Yes hope you make it over! I hope to get back to cape cod this fall if its possible
F**kin awesome as always, thanks for sharing again ☺️.
It's great to know what lures you use but I'd love to know the rest of the set up, rod, reel, braid and leader etc.
Give us the scoop Yoda, like that we can get a bit closer 😆
Thanks, yes I do plan to do that cheers 👊
Inspiring video!
I have pliers, hook cutters.. and squash the barbs!
Be been attached to an angry bass and I dont want it to happen again.
I've be keen to smash out 60g metals when it is that windy, blueblue searide #1

Even by your standards Grant, that’s a pretty decent average fish size! Great to see your new designs bearing fruit :) Can’t wait to be able to travel safely again and go out to blank again on the West coast!

Very great authentic fishing vid! Where is this spot in Portugal? Thanks

Awesome ! Proper angling; too hard core for me these days but brings back some great memories of being battered by surf and hooking myself with low water big barbed salmon hooks; ouch 😣
Never go fishing without side cutters 😉
Great bass that 18 👍
cheers Glad you enjoyed it! yes agree about the side cutters ha!
sooooooo gooooooddddd
Jeez what a fish, it's my dream to catch a bass of that caliber, biggest I've had on a lure is just 53cm and I was over the moon, I am new to lure fishing though, caught it on my 4th time out
Just keep it at and most of all enjoying it, and the bigger fish will come!
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 don't worry I'm out at 4:30 am tomorrow morning off my local ledge, got high Hope's of beating my pb. Got 3 new lures to try out. Can't wait
Beat my pb last week with a 68cm and 66cm bass first time out this year too! Both on a 15g samson shad!
Good man, keep it up💪😍🎣🎣🎣

Great as always
Black is good at night
Now that you have black colour do you try them at night
What about making and patent a vynil lure
Bass love them
You coukd take an idea of an existing one and improve it giving your touch
Cheers
cheers, i was going to go at night but didnt get the chance as I was up early and fishing late! thanks for the comments, maybe sometime, just busy at the moment with a few projects , time is flying
Great skills fella, it’s been a while hooked myself like that😭😭

Great vid as usual! Have you ever try barbless hook?
thanks! i prefer with barbs
Hi Grant I live in the south west of England can you recommend the best samson lure to use for the bass please
well depends on what swell you get. Ive had guys doing well on the smaller21g bombs that cast great or Glides. If its small i would probably use the 15g tweak bait! just depends on conditions, wind and swell. Good luck
Fantastic fishing! What do you wear on your feet?
gardening boots here
Cracking video am looking at lure fishing this year what set up rod and reel would you suggest for bass to 8llb 😊🎣🎣🐟
I think a 3500 is enough nice and light, dont need to spend too much around 70 pounds and maybe choose a make you can get serviced easily! I like longer rods! currently working on a proto to cast Samson lures
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 thanks for replying tight line’s 👍👍🎣🐟🐟🐟
Fantastic bass, great skill!!! May I ask which beach in Portugal ? I plan book hotel there for fishing holiday:)
How’s the hand? That had to be sore fishing afterward 🤔. But worth it for those last fish. Unreal 👏
cheers! Yes definitely worth it 👍
Hi, Grant! Nice to see You catching those "double figures", as You call it... here in Portugal. I have some questions , if You do not mind, please:
1 - Line: I could read (from previous comments) You use a 30pound braid line. I think it may be some 0,25mm /30pound braid line. Right? What about the fluorcarbon? Do You use an end of about 1m? or You double the lenght of Your rod for a more resistent casting action? or maybe when fishing from higher places? It looks something like 0,50 or even 0,55mm. I am curious about this.
2 - Sometimes it seems You use a "no knot" attached to the clip. Right? When do You use a swivel?
3 - Union braid to fluorcarbon line. Knot: FG, albright? other preference?
Thanks.
Hi Jorge, yes for bass I generally use 30lb braid as I dont get any casting issues. I use fluro carbon leader around 1.5 meters which helps with rocks. I often use from .40 .50 depending on the location and situation. If im fishing over ledges where the braid will come into contact with rock when you hook a fish I will use even heavier.
From the fluro to clip I use a palomar knot or uni, and I have a swivel at the end of the braid. I can easily and quickly change the leader after a scrape. It works for me in all my fishing! Good luck!
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 Thank You, Grant!
Grant, I ordered 3 lures for a test: 01 Tweak Bait White- Medium Sink (Sub Surface Lure)30gr white + 01 Tweak Bait White- Medium Sink (Sub Surface Lure)50gr white + Tweak Bait - Medium Sink Chartreuse Silver Belly (Sub Surface Lure) 50gr. - I hope these are a good choice... - I like the subsurface lure presentation...
My area is the coast north to Cabo da Roca up to Nazare. I am going to try my chances with a now heavier Carbolino 3,7m rod + shimano stella 10000 and 0,25mm/30pound braid line / 0,45-0,50mm fluorcarbon leader. ... Normally using 3m rods + 0,18mm braid+0,40mm leader and reels 4000-5000... or a Daiwa Osprey, 10-60gr, 3,30m and a stella 6000 with 0,20mm / 0,43mm fluorcarbon leader - And I am looking forward to be allowed to also try these lures...
@@jorgecorreia5251 Good choice hope you do well
Cracking video again and some stunning fish to help us through the dark days of lockdown. My boys think you are superman for the way you dealt with the hook through the hand.🙌 one question, I cannot find the Samson Glide on your website, will it be available in a smaller 20-40g size and if so when please?
Thanks 👍 The glides will be online in less than 2 weeks i hop in 15g 28g upwards
Great news. I will look forward to giving them a go, many thanks.
Awsome video and great skills! I’m fishing in the uk ( south coast) just putting braid on my reel. I’m going for 20ib braid is that ideal for lure fishing off the beach? What strain did you use to land your 18ib monster?
thanks, yes i generally use 20lb braid, or 30lb around very rocky areas at times to keep control of the fish, but 20lb is easily enough. Good luck
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 awesome ! I literally just had a bass near Brighton on todays high tide! I’m using braid straight onto my lure - is a leader a better idea? I did snap the braid on one cast loosing a lure? Maybe my technique? 20ib shouldn’t snap on cast right? Hope your hand healed after that savage hook!!
@@timboh8776 well done! Yes 20lb braid shouldnt break casting unless it a very heavy lure. I use a long bimini twist with to double the line. Yes best use a leader for sure
Love this lads videos he’s one cool cat 😎
dude you are a true legend
Any way to use these lures for spinning but to get them to sink? Is the only way to reel slowly or get a heavier lure? Using 60gram on kayak towing... would weighting the line help or would the drag put the bass off? Had a problem with a gull once and hate doing it ;)
Hi, all the Samsonlures are sinking lures. The fast sink tweak bait will stay down the best and is a subsurface lure
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 Thanks will take a look
Where I get bass like that in Ireland?
Awesome ! Appreciate a lot your videos. Monsters bass in this one 👍. By the way, what rodes do you use ? I fish from the rocks also and I’m looking for a longer one. Thx 😊
12ft testing a proto
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 ok thx..
Your hand makes a case for barbless hooks. You may lose a few fish, but the ones you catch will be easier to unhook and return uninjured.
What are you doing with the big Bass’s that you cought in Portugal?
the 18lber and next double both went back. But I have no issue with keeping bass to eat when I want one. I was travelling back that day. Most trips around the world I keep what I need to eat fish every day and release the other 90%
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 good. Thank you for your attention 🙏🏼😎
Hi Grant. Recently moved to the UK from South Africa and getting into bass fishing. Is it unusual to catch bass during the winter? Is there a specific time of the year that's better? Cracking video!
Hi Gareth, I dont fish in the UK but I hear you can catch bass in the UK through the winter time. I think it also depends on your location. Good luck
Hi Grant, could you let us know your rod and line breaking strain to tackle these beast in such rough conditions? Like you I have also preferred a longer rod 10/11’
Im actually working on a 12ft proto that will be out later in the year. It will cast from 30g to 100g
@@lurefishingfromtheshore-gr8270 Cool, Ed 'Rock Hopper' Schliffke designed an 11' Normark bass rod years ago. Makes me laugh when I see a lot of bass anglers fishing 7/8' rods. I always argued that a longer rod gives you more control.

What length rod should i go for? I've been advised anything from 7ft to 9ft.
Depends on the situation entirely. Samsonfishing is currently developing a 12ft bass rod designed for casting distance and fishing around the rocks. I prefer longer rods. perhaps a shorter rod in calm conditions when distance is not much of a factor so its lighter
