    In 1990, at age 17, my first car was 20 years old! Older than me, but fantastically unique even back then, too. I had the 1970 Sport Fury S-23. Sure, not the 440 like the GT, only the 318. Lou asks if it was underpowered? Not that I could tell! The 318 was super reliable, and I drove it like a tank. Problem was in gas mileage, I can only imagine the 440 being even worse on fuel economy. Selling that car to go off to college remains my biggest regret ever! Lots of great memories, (including senior prom night in 1991- when I raced a 1987 Eagle Talon and blew its doors off on the way to the dance- LOL!) and this video helps them come all flooding back! Thank you, Lou. I have been waiting for one of these to come around and get featured. This was a real treat for me this morning! I only have a few pictures of me and the car left, but now I have this video too.

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 6 лет назад +2

      Jason Kline love your story! I never even realized there was a Fury S-23 model until this video. One correction, Eagles Talons didn't come out until 1990. I should know, a family member special ordered one the first year they came out, 1990.

    • @jasonkline267
      @jasonkline267 6 лет назад +3

      I thought his was a few years old at the time, so my memory picked 1987. If it was newer, then that makes the story even better! We weren't drag racing or anything, but after the first time he blew past me ( I knew him as an acquaintance), I put my foot down and passed him with a vengeance. I'm pretty sure those Talons were like a rebadged Mitsubishi Eclipse. I'm sure he would have beat me off the line, but since the Plymouth was all top end, I was doing 90-100 with pedal to spare. He never managed to catch up, but may be he had to be less reckless with his dad's NEW car, then I had to be that night raging full of adolescent testosterone and my FURY didn't let me down!. LOL! BTW, my girlfriend wasn't too pleased at the time, but we had a great night still the same! Good Catch, and Thanks!

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 6 лет назад +2

      Jason Kline since you actually owned a S-23, can you tell us more about it? Loaded? Colors? How you found it. Yes the Eagle Talons and Plymouth Lasers were rebadged Mitsubishi Eclipses. They were build by Diamond star motors. I miss that Eagle Talon today like you miss your Sport Fury S-23. Is a super rare car today as ours was a special order car with all the trimmings.

    • @jasonkline267
      @jasonkline267 6 лет назад +4

      OK. My story is exactly the reason why you don't buy a classic car for a 17 year old kid. My parents were separated, and she lived in an apartment complex that was probably 60% retirees. An older gentleman had the Sport Fury, and If he wasn't the original owner he was the second. He had it a long time, but had done some electrical work to it. Electrical problems were the worst part of the car. In this video, where the rear window defogger is, this guy had installed an after market 3rd brake light on mine, and the hide-away headlights never worked (stuck in open position). I think we paid him about 1500 or so cash, in 1990, for what my mom thought was an OLD worn out car. I had learned to drive in other family cars, but this was my first car, just for me. I needed to drive to school for my senior year, and we had got it that summer. Didn't do much work to it, but it did need a distributor cap and rotor at one point, and we did the water pump. As for my example, it was a faded red color, with the black strobe pin stripping, and a black vinyl interior. It wasn't loaded by any means, a basic version, but did have factory air that didn't work. I had managed to give it a few dings, and get a couple of speeding tickets. But it was a great car. Like I said, at the time I had to get ready to go off to college, a regular 3 hour commute to come back home to visit seemed like a lot of miles to put on an already high mileage car, and my Dad talked me into selling it to get something better on gas economy. He never told me how much he sold it for, and I saw it drive around town for a little while after. I had instant remorse, and just knew that the reason my dad never told me how much he got for it was that it wasn't enough. Even if we had just parked it, that thing would be worth a ton more than we ever spent on it by now. The video is accurate in that the GT had all the options. The S-23 was a stripped down, budget model. The surprise for me is that some came with the slant 6, presumably out of a Duster? THAT might have been underpowered because these are long heavy cars. But the 318 was a pretty decent v8, and hadn't yet been plagued to meet emission standards. In fact 1972 was the last year for the Sport Fury, because 1973 requirements couldn't be met in the platform. I didn't have it long, just over one year, but it was long enough to fall in love with the car forever.

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 6 лет назад +2

      Jason Kline awesome story. Was there any badges on the car that stated it was a S-23? How could anyone know that it was an S-23 by looking at it? I think the 6 cylinders only came in the Fury I and II. Even the S-23 base engine was the 318 V8 but could be optioned with the 383. So the only option your car had was the Air conditioning?

    I too took my driving test in a Mopar. It was a 1970 Newport 2 door in black with gold interior, 8 track and air. The DMV tester failed me for not getting the parallel parking perfect. Devastated, I later found out the jerk flunks all kids at 16. He apparently didn't feel we were experienced enough. I did go back 2 weeks later and passed. That car was amazingly fast and fun to race down the streets!

The Car looks better and in Cold weather, they protect the Wipers from Freezing to the Windshield. Also if the Wipers do Freeze to the Windshield, they are so close to the engine that the heat released from the engine will unfreeze them in a couple minutes. One of my favorite all time cars! Lou you did another 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury GT in a white exterior owned by a father/son that was beautiful. But honestly, this one in Jamaica Blue is gorgeous with that gold/yellow reflective strip. I guess Air conditioning couldn't be had on the 440 six pack either? Lol. Probably being a Buffalo N.Y. car, the rear defogger was more of a necessity than the Air conditioning option. And who doesn't love the hideaway headlight? Dave was awesome and knowledgeable.

    The 70 model also came with what they called the 90% power steering. Some said it allowed over steering but i never had a problem with it. This is still my dream car today. I regret ever trading mine in for a new car.

    Nice Sport Fury. Oh these old Dodges and Plymouths bring back memories. I would ride my bicycle over to the nearest Chrysler-Plymouth dealership and peer into the windows of every vehicle, and read the sheets in the windows. I'm sure they wondered why there were fingerprints and noseprints on the windows! 😄 The blue Dodge Charger behind Dave's car is so beautiful too. Thank you Lou!

Man, that car was fast as it was cool! He wrecked it 3 days later spent some time it the hospital. But when he got the insurance check. He bought a Super Bee 383 automatic and a spoiler. It's an honest big powerful American car, that has style and comfort and what more would you want.

Someone gave me a base 75 Sport Fury with blown head gaskets. I'm looking at it, and I've got a 68 318 with 230 horse compared to the 75s 110. Well, you know what happened! Lol

    beautiful car - my favorite year for Fury - I was fortunate to have grown up during the era when these beauties were new in the Holley Motor Co. showroom in Tyler, Texas (east Texas’ only full line Chrysler dealer - including Imperial) my grandfather traded our 4 company cars every 2-3 years and - we traded our 68 Ember Gold metallic/white vinyl roof Fury III 2-door Fast Top and a 68 Hawaiian Blue Sport Suburban 2-seat wagon (both Commando 383-equipped) for a 70 Sunfire Yellow/black vinyl roof Sport Fury 2-door hardtop and a 70 Sandpebble Beige Sport Suburban 2-seat wagon - both 70 models were equipped with 383 engines and hood-mounted turn signals adjacent the “383” hood-mounted engine displacement badges. All “Sport” Fury models including Sport Suburban wagons were equipped with the red, white and blue rectangle adjacent the driver side concealed headlamp door. The grilles/headlamp doors on these cars had a black background with horizontal argent silver painted lines (I believe the GT and S/23 models had fully blacked out grilles but I need some verification of this detail). the sales brochure pictures appear to bear this out - by the way the chrome styled road wheel was a correct option on all models except wagons
    Incidentally, I had left comments pertaining to the Tor-Red Sport Suburban wagon you featured in a different RUclips segment a while back. Our friend OsbornTramain posted a very cool original “Plymouth Makes It” (1970 Plymouth ad slogan) TV commercial here on RUclips (see link below). the “fuselage styled” vehicles - especially the wagons really were beautiful - with their curved glass, sheet metal, integrated rear window roof air deflectors and chrome/vinyl tailgate assist handles - just can’t say enough about these great cars

    I had a 440 Mag RT/SE Challenger. WHEN it was running, it was amazing.... The cam they use in those is SOOO high lift that the springs are like impossible to compress to keep the lifters from floating at high revs. So the lifters would wear out. And eat the cam.

I really do appreciate the time you spend bringing these great "old" cars back to us. I know many, many others appreciate it as well. BTW I've heard that the lowly 318 small blocks can be "built-up" to something in the 600 hp range. Can you imagine a high winding small-block putting ou that kind power? That's getting into Viper range but with a little less torque. Giddy-up my man Giddy-up.
