I wish we could see the alternate scenes that were filmed to resolve this cliffhanger. I remember seeing in either the National Enquirer or The Star pictures of bandages being taken off Bobby, and J.R. embracing his brother in the hospital (I think J.R. was even wearing the same ascot that he's wearing in his confrontation with Angelica). The dream resolution stunk and there had to have been other ways to bring Patrick Duffy back without writing off an entire season. I may be in the minority but I liked a lot of the plot lines that came out of the dream season.

Agreed, I hate that they just tossed S9. *Especially* in regards to Sue Ellen who finally gets the development she deserved. It’s also pretty much the last time JR gets any real nuance and isn’t a caricature.
Soaps brought unambiguously dead characters back all the time - it’s a goofy trope but it beats writing off an entire season (especially a good one). It was also a wild decision because of Knots
I really didn't miss Bobby. I liked this season. A lot of possibilities with the explosion especially with Sue Ellen.

Don’t recall much from when I was 5 years old but still remember this scene. My parents were Dallas junkies and they had no explanation for these 5 minutes, which clarity would not come for a whole summer. 80s cliffhangers and no social media to explain it, good times.

Originally SueEllen would have survived the explosion but would have been left paralyzed. She would blame JR for it and they would become estranged again as she worked on learning to walk again.
@@seand2711 I thought she was supposed to be blind. But either way, would've liked to have seen the alternate universe of Dallas where Sue Ellen is incapacitated, Jamie is dead, and someone who looks like Bobby enters the fold and everybody is trying to figure out who he is.
So Pamela is awakened by the water running in the shower (closed) but not by the explosion in her dream... 🤔😂

USELESS TRIVIA DEPT: The Producers worked so hard to keep Bobby's return a secret that they hired a seperate film crew for the scene. They built the shower set in a separate studio, and pretended to be filming an Irish Spring soap commercial. At the end of the "commerical," Duffy paused, then said his "Good Morning" line from the show. That end bit was used for the episode.
So somewhere in the world is some film of Patrick Duffy doing an Irish Spring commerical.
Yeah it was "Good morning!" (beat) "....and you'll have a good morning too with Irish Spring!"
How 'bout that? A soap commercial used in a soap opera--and *Patrick Duffy* 🧼🚿 is quite Irish... ☘️🍀🇮🇪🇺🇸

Yellowstone had a pretty good one too where (SPOILER ALERT) most of the main characters started getting randomly shot and/or attacked out of nowhere
I think one way they could've brought Bobby back would've been if he just showed up like it was a normal day and let it never be explained to fans why..... no dream season
Those first few episodes you'd get stuff like Bobby coming down to have breakfast at Southfork and saying "Goodmorning everybody! What's for breakfast? I'm starving!" while everyone's looking bug-eyed and partially terrified at him. The breakfast conversation could be like...
Ellie: "(quivering)........Bobby? Are you feeling alright?"
Bobby: "I'm fine Mama. Why do you ask?"
JR: "You died Bob, We had your funeral and everything. Your grave's right outside."
Bobby: "Hmmm, must've been some kinda mix-up. Anyway JR, don't we still have that meeting with Harv Smithfield........?"

Dream explanation: Pam harbored some latent resentment against Sue Ellen and Jamie. Anjelica was a reflection of her desire to get back at J.R. But Pam knew unconsciously that she couldn't which is why Anjelica fails and J.R. lives.
this was an amazing cliffhanger.. 2 explosions and bobby coming back from the death.. tptb shouldn't made this season a dream. stupid stupid decision.
Its a little bit spookily famiiar to September 11th as to the explosion at the Ewing Oil building at 3.37-3.38 - as to the plot in itself - the producers cut their own thoat by bringing back the character of Bobby - it changed the show from a realistic drama show with regards to business and back stabbing and became a parody of its former self - you only have to look at the drop in the ratings - by the time the show stopped 5 years later it had fallen from the top 5 to outside the top 50
I was Sorry to see this season end.. I liked Grace and Angelica.. Patrick Duffy only agreed to come back to the show due to IF he did not "Wes Parmlee" Would Be Jock.. Jamie Ewing Barnes was The ONLY charter on the show to die twice.. Until Katherine Wentworth In Dallas 2012.. The show fooled us into thinking that Patrick was filming a Irish spring soap commerical in the shower..Sue Ellen does look like she is wearing a type of jump suit.. She also looked good for woman who was blown to bits for 1986-87. And no more trivilla fashions on Both Dallas and Knots landing After 1985-86.. And after this season the cord was cut between Dallas and Knots landing .
Honestly the main thing I didn't like about the dream season transition was the fall of Jack Ewing. He was great in that season, becoming partners/buddies with JR. He also had great friendships with Cliff, Ray and Clayton. He was also involved in many major storylines. It was obvious that he was there to help fill the Bobby-void and he was killing it.
@@legendbucwild Yes he was.. Their also was a story behind the scene that Dack Rambo and Larry Hangman didn't get along behind the scenes .. It was said that Larry Hangman was ALWAYS taking cracks that Dack Rambo was a homosexual in real life And Larry would say anti gay remarks.. And once Bobby came back to the show Dack was replaceable and was majorly cut down on for 1986-87.. But it was nice to See Dack Rambo on The Daytime soap Another world in the 90'..S Until his unfortunate death in March of 1994 !!
Dack Rambo was a closeted homosexual and died of AIDS complications in real life just Google him to learn more.

The ironic thing is he was added to the main titles opening in the next season, even tho he was being aked half way through ???
@@carlodonn8983 Agreed on all counts. Jack was the star. Then season 10 comes and all he does is sit by the pool the whole time and act like a jerk.

My dad threw the biggest fit when the building blew up with sue ellen in it, then even a bigger shocker came when Bobby turned around!
F UCK......when i first saw this scene back at the time i remember that night when i slept....i had a beautiful dream that somehow my ((by now)) ex wife was finally gone for good and i was finally free but when sadly i woke up next morning i heard the water running and i thought my toilette had a leak or something but when i went in i saw...........GUESS WHO DAMN IT........
Unfortunately as Bobby's death was mentioned in knots landing and a woman was stalking bobby before the dream season began and only the viewer saw what Mark Grayson later explained to pam in the dream season I believe that it was not a dream season ,it was real and everything that happened afterwards is in the imagination of a comatose sue Ellen after she got caught in the explosion . To back up my claim it is not possible for pam to dream up Ben stivers ( a man she has never seen) and after she wakes up he appears for real albeit with a different name ,it is possible however to meet him in the real world and then dream about him.
You finally resolved why Wes Parmallee make the mistake about Lake Tokapa.

So I'm guessing Jenilee decided to leave by this point and they made her wait until next year to do so. They were alluding to her getting killed off. Funny thing is she almost died before the dream season. Maybe she realized Dallas was gonna get rid of her and decided to pull the trigger first.

This cliffhanger helped to totally destroy the show, in my humble opinion.
The first "major crackle" was replacing Barbara Bel Geddes for Donna Reed. Donna Reed hasn't understood the character of Miss Ellie Ewing (Farlow) at all. While BBG portrayed strong, decent matriarch, DR transformed Miss Ellie into a housewife offering coffee to the visitors.
The second "mortal wound" was this resurrection of Bobby Ewing. Who is dead should stay dead.
The third "bullet fired into dead body" was the plot around Wes Parmalee. Steve Forrest meant to return as a "new" Jock, but at the very end, the producers decided to abandon the idea.
you got them all wrong my friend.
1) barbara could not be available for this season as u know. donna was just a short term replacement. next season barbara was back so nothing was destroyed.
2) yes...who is dead must remain dead and bobby was not dead. it was all pams' dream as it was revealed in the end. that's the official plot.
3) yes again....he was to return as the new jock but after the fans protested the idea was abandoned and rightly so......jock = jim
BBG rejoined the show at the time of the dream season. She was on this season.

1) I know, why Barbara Bel Geddes missed the whole season 8 and why she was absent from a respective part of season 7. It was due to her heart problems and the subsequent surgery. Nonetheless, Donna Reed was IMHO bad idea as a replacement. They could had chosen better actress than Donna Reed or write a different script for Miss Ellie (being abroad, or in hospital, etc.)
2) Patrick Duffy wanted to leave Dallas for good after the 8th season, so his character was killed off. But after a year, he realized his decision was not so smart and he wanted to return to Dallas. So the writers had to come up with a "logical" solution, why Bobby is not dead. The thing is Larry Hagman wanted Patrick Duffy back, Patrick Duffy wanted to be back and it made a huge damage to the show, IMHO.
3) Steve Forrest was a great actor and he would had done justice to the character of Jock Ewing. I understand, why the viewers wouldn't have accepted Steve in the role, but for me, Steve would had been better Jock than Donna Reed was Miss Ellie. Nonetheless, Parmalee's story arc was badly finished.
But this discussion is literally academic, because the events turned out differently...

The original miss Ellie came back, bobby was still dead in knots landing series, then bobby returned , ruining the entire season of knots landing because of Pam's dream
