What I say in the Video and the Idea I agree with the Most is that using the dexnav in general gives you a higher chance of finding a shiny pokemon similar to friend safari in Pokemon X and Y.

@ the most recent thing we have is how the shiny odds work with or without a chain. The main thing that helps you get a shiny is search level. So building a chain DOES give you the best shiny odds overall, but it’s still NOT required to get a shiny. Because not all pokemon can build up a dexnav chain because of location. I’m in the process of making an updated dexnav video that will talk about this concept 👍✨
I just want to say this. My first ever legit shiny encounter was in oras and it was an Uxie! It was after my guitar concert at school, in the car with my dad going home with my 3ds about to die. I was freaking out and didn't know what to do then remembered I had a master ball :). So a little shot of advise, always save you masterball for emergencies
In my pokemon white game, I also got hold of a shiny kangaskhan same way, it was about to faint as I stupidly switched in chandelure thinking it can't touch me and it used crunch, flame body activated and had to use master ball 😊
Also, for deserts (havent tested caves and water, but i think it's the same), the pokemon will randomly choose 2 spots and move back and forth, sometimes staying in the same spot. THEY ONLY CHOOSE 2 SPOTS. I can't say that enough. So when you see them move, stay next to the spot they moved from. Then they'll come back and it's easy to catch them. If, however, you are too close to both spots, they will run away. Hope this helped.
Yeah and it took a fucking hell of a long time to get a shiny. Going for Mewtwo in Soul Silver and it's been about a month collectively. Ima be so pissed if Mewtwo isn't shiny locked in Gen 7.

Just as an update for anyone who needs it, we know now that dex nav chaining DOES affect the shiny chances, but ONLY on the 50th and 100th encounter. Any other part of the chain, your increased shiny odds are purely from your search level. What this means is that it probably is worth aiming for super high chains on grasslands and underwater since they’re relatively easy to maintain, while chaining in caves, desert, and surfing it’s not really worth chaining beyond just racking up the search level. Chain as far as you can, but don’t sweat it if it breaks. Also, if you’re using an emulator, a save state before the 50th or 100th encounter would be a good idea.
@@kaikathegreat2255 At a base level, yes. Bulbapedia says that the rate becomes 0.1%. However, you can further boost the chances if it’s the 50th (1.2%) or the 100th (2%) encounter of the chain.
In my own experience though, I've found it much easier to search for a pokemon when using a chain, and I've been getting overall much better IVs when doing chains, so either way I think chains would help in not only finding the shiny a bit faster, but making said shiny have better IVs as well
I caught a shiny Eevee while watching this video!! I can agree that the chaining method doesn't matter. I got the search level up to 214 and it took me around 2-3 days of trying for only a few hours at a time. So awesome!!
I got a shiny Ralts using the DexNav for the first time like early in game when helping Wally to get his Ralts, I couldn't believe it. And Ralts is pretty cool in shiny suit haha. Today it's a beautiful dark blue and orange Gallade, that is even cooler in mega ;)

The fact that you don't break shiny-chains, as shiny rate is fixed, is amazing. Some areas don't allow for long chains due to tight floor spaces (caves, specifically). And the bit about avoiding every 5th saved me. I can almost never catch those in caves. I think I've had 1200 RE's and a few 4-chains and 2-chains for Unown, but I went back to chaining and found a shiny K! A-OK!

Captain Gallade That's Fantastic! Yeah the Chaining method does work with the dexnav but the only plus is it really only helps get the extra level if you chain. The Run Away Method works Great for Caves,Water and the Desert.

yeah trying to chain in cave,desert, and water gets really hard on the 5th of the chain and is just not worth the frustration. We never got the sandile. I found a Shiny Baltoy instead.
SmkGaming05 Yeah I saw that video :) Last week I did get two shiny Sandile and one of them I even caught live but unfortunately my camera froze so the video wasn't recorded...so I was really sad about that since it would by my very first live shiny encounter. Finally got it! Encounter 904, female at level 15! I had to use a Quick Ball because it learns teleport at level 9, and it doesn't have the best nature, but I'm still super stoked. I'm going to evolve it into Gardevoir and make it my shiny hunting Gardevoir!

I need to thank-you for posting videos on how to work the DexNav. I didn't understand how to work it at all, and originally threw the idea off. But after watching this, it helped completely. I encountered, and finally caught, a Shiny Wurmple the other day, and I wouldn't have gotten him so soon if it wasn't for you. So thank-you very much. I now find this way of hunting very fun. (Though I will do other methods, too. Mainly SR and MM). But there are so many different choices, I don't know which Pokemon to hunt next. xD
I absolutely love the DexNav! It's super fun, and it gave me my first legit shiny ever in AS (Not counting the Pokemon that are always shiny like red Gyarados in G/S and HG/SS and Axew/Dratini in BW2) being a cute lil pink Slakoth ^-^
The luckiest I ever got shiny hunting was finding a shiny electrike using the dex nav, after about, 6 encounters. Then, while looking for a shiny ponyta, finding a shiny machop after roughly 30 encounters, like, 20 minutes afterwards, with no chaining done. Bricks were shat that day.
I think the luckiest I’ve ever gotten with the dexnav was the time I got a shiny female eevee less than 20 encounters. Eevee has a 12.5% chance to be female
8 years later, I'd like to let you know this is still super helpful! Me and my friends are doing a game from each generation from red/blue to scarlet/violet with a different challenge each game as an interesting way to replay them. I'm on ORAS now trying to do a shiny badge challenge, must find 1 shiny before each badge.
You should do another video on this topic, using the stuff that was found in the code of the game for Dexnav. The things like only chains at encounter 50 and 100 matter, and search level determining shiny rates. After 901 odds reach the maximum.
Something I learned from the Alpha Sapphire game about diving, when you catch Kyogre it can learn dive as it's a water type but, if you dive in an area where underwater trainers are they will be to scared of Kyogre to fight or talk to you but wild Pokemon will still challenge you though so watch out. Oh and contrary to what the internet says, your starter Pokemon is NOT shiny locked, just keep soft resetting and you'll eventually get one.
Finally a guide that makes sense and is likely correct (from my experience too; others said you always need to chain a lot)! And with a demonstration too. Thanks. :)
The first shiny I've ever found was Sneasel at a Friend Safari. I ended up killing him and didn't find another Sneasel in that Friend Safari again... :')
My first Friend Safari shiny was an Electrode. The VERY FIRST encounter, in the VERY FIRST patch of grass, and it was SHINY. Buuuuut... I ended up thinking that it had Self-Destruct in its moveset, so...I ended up using my Master Ball on it. I also have two 5% horde Shinies: Ekans to Arbok, and Taillow to Swellow. :)

Caught my first (intentional) shiny at the 8 minute mark of this video!! So happy!! Basically, I got nostalgic and missed my OR party so I brought my old 2DS out to play with them when I realized I was on Mt. Pyre and remembered I was trying to chain for a shiny Vulpix last time I played. So I went right back to that. Opened youtube on my laptop, just watched a few funny vids, was feeling bored and unsure if I was hunting the right way so I opened up this video, I'd seen it a couple times before. I guess even if my chain doesn't matter I was hunting right because there's my very own hard earned shiny Vulpix! Thanks for the video. Now I guess begins my journey to make up for when I accidentally ran from a shiny magnemite as a kid.
The level is dependant on the chain, It goes higher and higher every 5 encounters until 100, the resets to default lvls. All other aspects are dependant on the search lvl.
Several years later, until now i had always thought I had used the Dex Nav wrong when I hunted my Shiny Absol, Warning. Apparently I wasn't doing it wrong, I was just running away lol. Looking at this video makes me want to do that full Shiny Playthrough I've been thinking about and doing it in ORAS. Perhaps I should do it.
Using the DexNav is so annoying, especially in caves. Can't find any Pokemon... Can't find any... Can't find any... Oh look! It spawned and moved around too quickly for you to get to it without scaring it, and then it ran away.

So, I was using the DexNav to hunt for a shiny Golbat in Sorched Slab because on the second floor all you can run into is zubat's and golbat's so I figured I'd have an easier time to get one of those. After having watched your first video while chaining, I realized that there was something more to shiny hunting than you discussed in the video. Then my browser opened up this video and everything I was encountering in the cave (the dust cloud, the fifth pokemon being hard as hell to encounter, the fact that sometimes the pokemon will run away when you're not even moving) were all explained. Thank you for this video, because I was starting to get very frustrated. XD I'll keep using the dex nav to hunt for pokemon, but now that it sounds like there's possibly a fixed rate, I might not hunt for golbat anymore and spend my time on a pokemon that I like a little better.

Well, now I feel silly for being so careful about chaining Oddishes. But I keep doing chains anyway for increased levels and stuff anyway. I don't see a point in running. I just want to hunt. It gives me a break from being a Pokemon Breeder.
I managed to get 5 shiny pokemon using previous "chaining" method, but based on this video it's just all about the encounters. I tried the "run away" method and found it more tedious with encountering the pokemon I search for every other pokemon. Meaning it's a A, B, A, B encounter in my experience. That was just too numbing. Gonna experiment with building a chain of 10 and running away from 10th encounter to reset levels to keep the pokemon level low. Not to mention, I'll run into about 10 encounters before having to hop on the bike to resume searching. I'll even have a tally counting down from 512 since that's the number all around sites. It's all about doing what you need to to just make it a fun experience and psychologically motivating. =D
6 year late, but here is the general gist of the shiny odds: first the search level determinds the base shiny odds. the higher the better! then the game does rolls and looks if one of them says "its a shiny!". if one says its a shiny it IS a shiny. one base roll +2 from shiny charm +5 for a chain of 50-99 +10 for a chain of 100+ +4 at random (4% chance) max odds (seach lvl 999 and 17 rolls): 1:38 (rounded up)
I've never encountered a shiny pokemon in my 8 years of playing pokemon. I've tried every method of finding shinies and have never succeeded. Hopefully this video will help me get my first shiny ever. (I'm going for Zorua who've I've encountered hundreds of times.) I could use some shiny luck! I disagree about the "5th chain increases shiny odds" because I've found Lv 10 increased pokemon via Dex Nav from Encounters and NOT chains. For example I was about to Dex Nav for Poocheyena and after a few encounters I remembered that Poocheyena also appears in hordes. I tried a horde encounter and then remembered zigzagoon (I don't need another shiny Zigzagoon) so I went back to Dex Naving and the 1st Poocheyena was Lv 12 with 3 Star potential and an egg move (i think it was Ice Fang) but any way not sure if this is significant but I just wanted to give my opinion and what I thought of it. I remember on the first route I shiny hunted for a zorua got one at 600 encounters, went to the Pokemon center, and then came back and just searched one more time and got two shinies in a row 😱 Also I never had to use my acro bike unless that fucking kid ran into my zorua, but now in the grass randomly I can't find anymore, why is that?

As you said, chains do not matter so this means: 1.- If I run out of PP I can leave the area, go to the Pokemon Center and then keep encountering the pokemon via Dexnav. 2.- Save and turn off my game and then keep trying. Just want to be sure because in your other Dexnav video you say that this breaks your "chain". (Sry bad english)
+maxroco371 In my first video all we knew was chaining was a thing and it helped find shiny pokemon. Now we know it is just a Flat rate for getting shiny pokemon. so you can leave the route or turn your game off and it will NOT affect your shiny odds for a Dexnav Pokemon.

Chains Actually help a lot when shiny hunting. Chains make it easier to find the Pokemon again, give a chance for it to have it's hidden ability, and can give it up to 3 perfect IVs
+Matthew Krahm Chains only help get better chance at getting the pokemon again fast. The Better Stats and everything comes from the Search Level for that pokemon you are looking for.
I started playing omega ruby like 5 days ago, but i did nothing but soft resetting for a shiny treecko(Took me 5 days to find that muthafakka)Yesterday i finally found it, now i'm tryin' to dexnav a zigzagoon.
I dont know. I think for the ones in the grass, which stay immobile until their internal timer runs out, is ok. But the ones that constantly move around (caves and/or while surfing), chaining does have an effect. Just earlier, was surf chaining for Skrelp for at least a 2 ☆☆ with Adaptability, and after each encounter, they'll pop up 100% of the time, and after the fifth chain, they begin to move quicker (darting after ~1.2 sec) and they gain a +1 to all successive encounters (so they went from 25 to 26). Unfortunately broke it after the 10th chain only, but there does seem to be an immediate effect. Please test and verify.
My 3ds recently stopped working, my switch got raided by my nephew so he plays Fortnite on it, I've resorted to running emulator to play old Pokémon games but the nostalgia is worth it

Quick question if anyone has an answer. I've been using the dexnav for a while and I noticed something that I couldn; quite figure out. Occasionally I'll se a mark (exclamation point) above the pokemons sillouhette before encountering it. I know it has nothing to do with moves or abilities because of where it's placed. But sometimes the mark isn't there. Does anyone know what it means? I can't figure it out.

Captain Gallade That's Fantastic! Yeah the Chaining method does work with the dexnav but the only plus is it really only helps get the extra level if you chain. The Run Away Method works Great for Caves,Water and the Desert.
SmkGaming05 Another thing I can't believe I din't figure out earlier was that pokémon in caves, desert and water follow a certain pattern but this still makes it pretty hard after a chain of 4. Btw did you already find that shiny Sandile you were looking for? I'm hunting one too atm :)
yeah trying to chain in cave,desert, and water gets really hard on the 5th of the chain and is just not worth the frustration. We never got the sandile. I found a Shiny Baltoy instead.
SmkGaming05 Yeah I saw that video :) Last week I did get two shiny Sandile and one of them I even caught live but unfortunately my camera froze so the video wasn't recorded...so I was really sad about that since it would by my very first live shiny encounter. I assume you have a capture card but do you know any other methods to record your 3DS nicely?
you can record with a nice webcam but that is the closest way you'll get for decent quality.

Finally got it! Encounter 904, female at level 15! I had to use a Quick Ball because it learns teleport at level 9, and it doesn't have the best nature, but I'm still super stoked. I'm going to evolve it into Gardevoir and make it my shiny hunting Gardevoir!

I need to thank-you for posting videos on how to work the DexNav. I didn't understand how to work it at all, and originally threw the idea off. But after watching this, it helped completely.
I encountered, and finally caught, a Shiny Wurmple the other day, and I wouldn't have gotten him so soon if it wasn't for you. So thank-you very much. I now find this way of hunting very fun. (Though I will do other methods, too. Mainly SR and MM).
But there are so many different choices, I don't know which Pokemon to hunt next. xD

I absolutely love the DexNav! It's super fun, and it gave me my first legit shiny ever in AS (Not counting the Pokemon that are always shiny like red Gyarados in G/S and HG/SS and Axew/Dratini in BW2) being a cute lil pink Slakoth ^-^

The luckiest I ever got shiny hunting was finding a shiny electrike using the dex nav, after about, 6 encounters. Then, while looking for a shiny ponyta, finding a shiny machop after roughly 30 encounters, like, 20 minutes afterwards, with no chaining done. Bricks were shat that day.

I think the luckiest I’ve ever gotten with the dexnav was the time I got a shiny female eevee less than 20 encounters. Eevee has a 12.5% chance to be female

I'm on ORAS now trying to do a shiny badge challenge, must find 1 shiny before each badge.

You should do another video on this topic, using the stuff that was found in the code of the game for Dexnav. The things like only chains at encounter 50 and 100 matter, and search level determining shiny rates. After 901 odds reach the maximum.
Something I learned from the Alpha Sapphire game about diving, when you catch Kyogre it can learn dive as it's a water type but, if you dive in an area where underwater trainers are they will be to scared of Kyogre to fight or talk to you but wild Pokemon will still challenge you though so watch out. Oh and contrary to what the internet says, your starter Pokemon is NOT shiny locked, just keep soft resetting and you'll eventually get one.

My first Friend Safari shiny was an Electrode. The VERY FIRST encounter, in the VERY FIRST patch of grass, and it was SHINY.

I ended up thinking that it had Self-Destruct in its moveset, so...I ended up using my Master Ball on it.
I also have two 5% horde Shinies: Ekans to Arbok, and Taillow to Swellow. :)

Basically, I got nostalgic and missed my OR party so I brought my old 2DS out to play with them when I realized I was on Mt. Pyre and remembered I was trying to chain for a shiny Vulpix last time I played. So I went right back to that. Opened youtube on my laptop, just watched a few funny vids, was feeling bored and unsure if I was hunting the right way so I opened up this video, I'd seen it a couple times before. I guess even if my chain doesn't matter I was hunting right because there's my very own hard earned shiny Vulpix! Thanks for the video. Now I guess begins my journey to make up for when I accidentally ran from a shiny magnemite as a kid.
The level is dependant on the chain, It goes higher and higher every 5 encounters until 100, the resets to default lvls. All other aspects are dependant on the search lvl.
Several years later, until now i had always thought I had used the Dex Nav wrong when I hunted my Shiny Absol, Warning. Apparently I wasn't doing it wrong, I was just running away lol. Looking at this video makes me want to do that full Shiny Playthrough I've been thinking about and doing it in ORAS. Perhaps I should do it.
Using the DexNav is so annoying, especially in caves.

Well, I once had to look for over level 999 for Clamperl to find a shiny one.
So, I was using the DexNav to hunt for a shiny Golbat in Sorched Slab because on the second floor all you can run into is zubat's and golbat's so I figured I'd have an easier time to get one of those. After having watched your first video while chaining, I realized that there was something more to shiny hunting than you discussed in the video. Then my browser opened up this video and everything I was encountering in the cave (the dust cloud, the fifth pokemon being hard as hell to encounter, the fact that sometimes the pokemon will run away when you're not even moving) were all explained. Thank you for this video, because I was starting to get very frustrated. XD I'll keep using the dex nav to hunt for pokemon, but now that it sounds like there's possibly a fixed rate, I might not hunt for golbat anymore and spend my time on a pokemon that I like a little better.

But I keep doing chains anyway for increased levels and stuff anyway. I don't see a point in running. I just want to hunt. It gives me a break from being a Pokemon Breeder.

I think the search level may make a difference with the odds, so I recommend doing horse encounters to make it higher.

I managed to get 5 shiny pokemon using previous "chaining" method, but based on this video it's just all about the encounters. I tried the "run away" method and found it more tedious with encountering the pokemon I search for every other pokemon. Meaning it's a A, B, A, B encounter in my experience.
That was just too numbing. Gonna experiment with building a chain of 10 and running away from 10th encounter to reset levels to keep the pokemon level low. Not to mention, I'll run into about 10 encounters before having to hop on the bike to resume searching. I'll even have a tally counting down from 512 since that's the number all around sites.
It's all about doing what you need to to just make it a fun experience and psychologically motivating. =D

6 year late, but here is the general gist of the shiny odds:
first the search level determinds the base shiny odds. the higher the better!
then the game does rolls and looks if one of them says "its a shiny!". if one says its a shiny it IS a shiny.
one base roll
+2 from shiny charm
+5 for a chain of 50-99
+10 for a chain of 100+
+4 at random (4% chance)
max odds (seach lvl 999 and 17 rolls): 1:38 (rounded up)
I've never encountered a shiny pokemon in my 8 years of playing pokemon. I've tried every method of finding shinies and have never succeeded. Hopefully this video will help me get my first shiny ever. (I'm going for Zorua who've I've encountered hundreds of times.)

Try the fishing method. Its the easiest method. I found like 10 shiny pokemon in less then 2 weeks. Try it

I disagree about the "5th chain increases shiny odds" because I've found Lv 10 increased pokemon via Dex Nav from Encounters and NOT chains. For example I was about to Dex Nav for Poocheyena and after a few encounters I remembered that Poocheyena also appears in hordes. I tried a horde encounter and then remembered zigzagoon (I don't need another shiny Zigzagoon) so I went back to Dex Naving and the 1st Poocheyena was Lv 12 with 3 Star potential and an egg move (i think it was Ice Fang) but any way not sure if this is significant but I just wanted to give my opinion and what I thought of it. Hi SMK awesome video!! As you said, chains do not matter so this means:
1.- If I run out of PP I can leave the area, go to the Pokemon Center and then keep encountering the pokemon via Dexnav.
2.- Save and turn off my game and then keep trying.
Just want to be sure because in your other Dexnav video you say that this breaks your "chain".

+maxroco371 In my first video all we knew was chaining was a thing and it helped find shiny pokemon. Now we know it is just a Flat rate for getting shiny pokemon. so you can leave the route or turn your game off and it will NOT affect your shiny odds for a Dexnav Pokemon.

Chains Actually help a lot when shiny hunting. Chains make it easier to find the Pokemon again, give a chance for it to have it's hidden ability, and can give it up to 3 perfect IVs
+Matthew Krahm Chains only help get better chance at getting the pokemon again fast. The Better Stats and everything comes from the Search Level for that pokemon you are looking for.

Doing a playthrough where I can only catch shiny pokemon. Just got a shiny Treecko, so this video helps a lot
I dont know. I think for the ones in the grass, which stay immobile until their internal timer runs out, is ok. But the ones that constantly move around (caves and/or while surfing), chaining does have an effect.
Just earlier, was surf chaining for Skrelp for at least a 2 ☆☆ with Adaptability, and after each encounter, they'll pop up 100% of the time, and after the fifth chain, they begin to move quicker (darting after ~1.2 sec) and they gain a +1 to all successive encounters (so they went from 25 to 26). Unfortunately broke it after the 10th chain only, but there does seem to be an immediate effect. Please test and verify.
First shiny I ever got chaining was Horsea
The chain method is extremely inconsistent from what I've experienced. I once had a 20 chain with a Poochyena, but I had a 150 chain with the Vulpix.

Quick question if anyone has an answer. I've been using the dexnav for a while and I noticed something that I couldn; quite figure out. Occasionally I'll se a mark (exclamation point) above the pokemons sillouhette before encountering it. I know it has nothing to do with moves or abilities because of where it's placed. But sometimes the mark isn't there. Does anyone know what it means? I can't figure it out.
+Keyboardkat3 The ! is For Pokemon that are not Native to Hoenn or Special Pokemon that have Egg Moves, Held Items, Good Potential. It has nothing to do with Shiny Pokemon.
Yes, if the exclamation point is above the silhouette, then it is not native to Hoenn. (Ex: Zorua, Lillipup, Aipom, and the like)
