The 660 is an extremely capable saw and I agree, it would have pulled that same chain through the oak without issue. The 090 is the better torque machine by a small margin, so clearly the better choice, but the 660 was plenty strong for that bar.
This vid is AMAZING!!! That root has just stood back up after the cut. Looks like the 090 AV was recently restored, and it ran and sounded great. Good job, guys.
I just got done cutting up a big oak like that, no thank you ever again. Pain in the ass to cut up into 18" piece, then split it up into sizes you can put in a fireplace. The reason I cut it up was because everybody I called could not handle it, their mills would only go up to 35" and I had over 5' in some areas, so nobody had a mill big enough to cut it up into mantels or some other type of cut to make something out of.But it only takes about 3 or 4, 18" pieces to make a cord of wood.
Good video, and good stats on your bar & chain. You were smart to put cribbing under the log first. When you cut off the rootball of a wind-thrown tree, don't you always expect it to flop back down in it's own hole? So someone needs to make sure the hole is empty. And if you are going to want to get rid of the stump, perhaps fill in the hole first, so all your work is above ground when the rootball flops back. What is the diameter of the log? And of the big rot hole?
The 090 is a low revving high torque saw this carb is tuned right, they are not supposed to sound tinny. These saws cut by pure raw power.... nice video and restoration!
No lol.. its just a huge engine for a saw, and back then they didnt have the tech to get the high rpm range you hear now in new saws.. new saws wind up higher and their max torque is in the high rpm range.. the old saws had rev limiters and more torque in the low rpm range
The brake on a chainsaw is like the safety on a gun, people who understand that the only safety you can actually rely on is in between your ears don't need one. It is a nice feature to have as an option but not as something that is required.
@@Chris-Fennimore your welcome brother god bless .Have not seen an a.c. in along time. Farmer where I deer hunter had one big saw only 24in bar IT WAS A BEAST .av I ment lol!
Nice old saw , sounds like you have it turned in well , I was more impressed with your friend 78 Yrs old and getting around like that. Do you still hang out with him ?
It probably was, these were known for being like tractors ,the 070 &090 only ran 7000-8000 rpm factory tuned they are long stroke big bore with alot of low and mid torque, saws now days run 12000-13500 average ,high winding little bastards but don't have the ripping torque these had, the clones of these are great for Alaskan saw milling for that reason, if you get one with a clutch that's worth a damn(good luck) they are great.
It's a matter of preference, but I always start the wedges about one third through. That way the chances of binding from a hidden core split or ring shake part-way through are minimized. Oak is better than fir or cedar for this, but it can still happen. - Nice piece of wood though!
rubbishdump09 Thanks, and you are right, that was my plan... 30% in I planned to wedge it. But I could tell it wasn't going to bind. Besides, I got carried away at the ease it was cutting during its first test after the rebuild. :-)
good saws 090 milled a lot of varieties of wood with one of these the most difficult was nz swamp kauri because the wood was stringy when first extracted like custom wood only wet hard on the gear but worth a fortune because of its age 20,000-40,000 years under ground and estimated 2000 years old before that was like going back in time watching these getting unearthed they were around with the dinosaurs the peat keeped them intacked unbelievable huge the stumps weighed in at 30tons
We had a bad ice storm around here a few years ago. I look after a property with about 10 miles of trails. We had a Hemlock that was about 20inchs in diameter across a trail. It had a trail marker on it so I decided to cut the stump high--about 8 feet to save the trail marker. I cut the tree and like this oak the stump stood back up. I sectioned the stem so we could move it out of the trail. A few years later I was leading a hike in the area. As we walked by the stump one of the ladies looked at the standing stump and asked, "how did you reach that high?"
HAHA! Nice story. I have had them stand back up with up to 20ft of stump. Same thing... people ask me why I would stand on a ladder to drop the tree that high. LOL
It will start cracking if its not painted. when the moisture leaves wood too fast it makes it crack just like concrete. So paints slows down dehydration to prevent cracks and splits.
Id have cut back side one third. Got in front. Cut down a third from top and cut the front in about 10 inches plunged in at a third way down and cut to the bottom. Came back up and cut down through the holding wood
7 years ago…. I’m sure this saw is still running like a total gem!
What a beautiful piece of machinery. Absolutely brutal!

I think your 660 would've done a fine job on that. I have zero complaints with ANY Stihl products I've used over the years!

Love them saws, I have 3 070 and one 090, I know it is slow by modern standards but it's like running a Harley Davidson. Good job.
Thanks 👍
If you want to prevent damaging the chain you can go around the cutting area with a metal detector first to look for metal wires and nails.

@@Logsnstuff that's what I was going to say
Yeah, wood this big, you have to mill yourself. I did mill this Oak into 2 1/2" slabs for the owner. Took me 12 hours. Got a video on it.
now that 090 is a beast of a saw. I'm impressed.

Placement & timing of wedges comes with experience.
Like a medicine chest; a Thoraxe (10.8kg wedge on a pole) is also an option if things go wrong.

WHY DO YOU PAINT THE CUT EDGE???
perhaps, colored primer
It will start cracking if its not painted.
when the moisture leaves wood too fast it makes it crack just like concrete. So paints slows down dehydration to prevent cracks and splits.
So the moisture will come out through the log and not the ends they might check real bad
