Rory .. Lou ...Rod .. and now Ted
so absolutely great and likeable musicians
I'm so fucking sad
R.I.P. Ted McKenna …and thank you!
Wilgar RIP
I saw Rory Live in Dublin, Still goes down as one of the best gigs I was ever at. Thanks for posting the video.
Mike it breaks my heart that Ted is now gone.. A master of his craft and more importantly... A complete and utter gentleman. Rip
wow,,, I cry now..... what a trio..unbeatable
Not many used to tapped at the 70's beside rorry, frank zappa, brian may, harvey mandel, steve hacket
This is real music. I'm glad so many of Rory's performances are available for us longtime fans to enjoy and for new fans to appreciate.
Rory just plays that guitar just off the planet. The best ever.
Greatest of all time.
Such a under rated guitar player😴
Great to have both Rory and Gary Moore as amazing guitarists in Irelands history 🇮🇪❤️
It’s a level that very few if any ever get anywhere near.
That Strat is part of him.
RIP Rory, truly the greatest.
Should have hired a singer@@jordyndisimone666
As a 62 year old rock and roll lover. Can’t believe I didn’t know of this unbelievable guitar player! Amazing!!
never too late, rock on dude.
54 when I discovered this legend. Quickly jumped into my top 2 (SRV)
Your obviously not a dedicated rock n roll lover if you’ve never heard of the genius that was Rory Gallagher
You obviously live in a hole underground
...my friend im 61 and i hear his masterpieces from 1980.... got bless him
I remember as a young teenager the first time I saw a clip of Rockpalast and he was the main act. It was the miserable early 70's Ireland when we had nothing and no-one. The only Irish guy out there doing things was Rory G. Seeing how respected he was by people outside Ireland (which was, at that time, a conservative, twisted culture in the grasp of state and church), was a breath of fresh air. He gave oxygen to many. Showed the way to many. His talent and importance cannot be underestimated. RIP Rory.
Easily one of the greatest guitarists who has ever lived.
My personal favorite guitarist, and I've seen a lot in my many years. Rory didn't care about the Money or the Fame, but he obviously cared dearly for his fans!
Eric George 8
My favorite guitarist att all time. Pure Talent.
Would be interesting to know why people gave a thumbs down. Rory is my all time guitar hero and seeing him live is such a treat. Just watching him makes me feel good and makes me smile.
+Mike Kirtley probably Joe Satriani fans finally getting a lesson and they don't like it.
very true ! As far as I'm concerned he'll blow anyone off a stage !
+Mike Kirtley Most likely the Gloria Estefan crowd getting stuffed off too much ice cream or sth.
+Mike Kirtley I saw Rory 3 times, the last time I was able to say "thank you" he replied "thank you" .. blew me away!
***** From what I've read about him that doesn't surprise me at all.
I’m ashamed to say I never heard of Rory until recently. I’m a fan now. He died way too soon. RIP Rory.
Rory Gallagher was the Best among the bests.
Rory was a one of a kind musician. His lyrics, playing, voice and stage energy was something like no other. There will never be another musician like Rory. May he RIP.

So True. 👍
Damn. What I would not give to go back in time and see musicians like Rory play live in the flesh.
Hell YEAH man 🤙
Boston Common August 1972 Tickets $2.50 I was there.
Who else can't sit still while hearing this man's music? He left us a gift that no one else could match. This makes music and performance footage is a treasure. Pure energy... I'm guessing anyone else watching this is feeling the same and I'm not speaking of anything new to the rest of you guys. There will never be another Rory Gallagher.
2 Gs. Genuine genius. People go on about Jimi, the Slowhand or the flamboyant Page. Fair enough. But this man is my all time guitar hero.
Amazing. That's what rock is all about.
This is now my favorite version
Most definitely yes!
Check out his very long parting Shadow Play, Belfast, 1984.
Enjoy.
Rory's great ! And McAvoy's sound is totally overwhelming !
Gerry McAvoy always makes me smile. He always has so much energy and it's like he's always trying to play harder and faster and gets so caught up in it all and doesn't want the music to stop. I sometimes wonder what he would have been like playing lead guitar trying to keep up with Rory.
Why oh why do people have to compare who was the best guitarist or the best drummer...(not including God in this) Rory to Clapton or Hendrix............John Bonham to Keith Moon or Ginger Baker etc etc etc yawn yawn f*&king yawn. Given the crap that is called music today we should be thankful for their contributions and legacy's. Given that Rory was such a humble musician he probably would have said the greatest guitarist was anybody but himself anyway.
I agree totally with you......😃😃😃
I always call Gerry 'The Glue'. He just held it all together.
70s rocked and Rory was at the heart of it. As been already said we were so lucky to have such great talents. 50s got it rolling, 60s got rocking and 70s got it rocking and rolling. The G Man was an amazing performer and a class act.
Listening to Rory is like a breath of fresh air in a world where, in my opinion (and that's all this is), music in many ways has become benign, stagnant and uninteresting thanks in part to TV shows that foster the notion of becoming a rich star rather than becoming musicians who truly play from the heart and stay true to the music. Rory is a national treasure who's music will continue to stand the test of time and be cherished... because it is REAL.
So True..
So sad that Rory died ,but thank God he lived.........................
Amen. Well said.
That makes it easier to accept the fact that he went so early.
The best thing anyone can say about Rory is...LISTEN!
On the day of his death all Irish television stations stopped the programs, even the BBC. His funeral was broadcast live nationally. This was Rory Gallagher. THIS IS RORY GALLAGHER.
During his Irish Tour '74 there was a truce between all fighting groups in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

J'ai écouté le rock pendant 60 ans, Rory est le meilleur guitariste de tous les temps, tout style confondu parce qu’il pouvait faire n'importe quoi c'était toujours le meilleur... Merci Rory...
I was playing this so loud today that my neighbours called the police!! When the police turned up, they arrested my neighbours.

My only music idol.
You will live on forever you legend!
I saw him live 25 or more times...it wasn't enough!
He was a genius and a full-on performer.
He always blew the place apart.
Arguably, the greatest guitarist ever! Just amazing. Thank you Rori. RIP
One of best guitarists of history
I saw him in a small club in '78. Sitting at a table 25-30 ft. from stage I knew I was in the presence of true greatness. You are SO right, BEST I've seen in my 60 years.
Yeah---- the Best ........ R.I.P. Rory Gallagher
they once asked Hendrix about how it feels to be the best guitarist in world..."I dont know" he replied,"ask Rory" !!!!!
Jimi Hendrix thought so and said so. Best I've seen in my 60 years!
THE best!!!! :D
I love listening and discovering Rory's music but the more I do I find I can't get over the powerful Bass lines of Gerry, he was incredible too!
Rory was a rare combination of raw musical genius combined with humility. Pop music was anathema to him.
This fantastic Guitar solo is simply unforgettable!
yhank you...
Have you heard the version from Stage Struck? To me, that version is the best, and the ending is the best live rock song ending I've ever heard.
Not simply ....🙄
Very complicated unforgettable
Today's anniversary 💕 of rory's passing. Gone 25 years. Every day I wish he was still here, because he was an excellent person and musician. I love 💘 you rory.
Jimmy Hendrix got a award for being the best guitar player when asked how dose it feel to be the greatest player he said I don't know ask Rory Gallagher
oisin morrissey did he really say that or are you memeing?
Guy Basil ........it’s a widely cited “myth” that has emerged since the new and renewed interest in Rory’s music, sounds nice but never happened. Jimi supposedly said this in a TV interview but I’ve seen that interview (and it’s now on RUclips) and Jimi was clearly embarrassed when asked the question and humbly replied “How about the best guitarist sitting in this chair huh?” Besides Rory (have known and loved him since the Taste days) there are a whole host of guitarists this was *never* said about including the previously mentioned Terry Kath and (ZZ Top’s) Billy Gibbons who Jimi did compliment. I’m happy to stand corrected but to the best of my knowledge, everyone connected to Rory denies this was ever said. Only recently, I saw this quoted yet again in an online article, it’s gotten so out of hand that it’s now being documented as “fact” serving to provide nothing more than false history.
Nothing needs to be said his performance says it all superb unique entertainer plays like nobody before or since in a class all by himself it's music folks it's not all about how fast your fingers move it's about playing good music and loving what ya do
@@lindadote
It's not a myth dumbass. I used to be obsessed with everything Jimi Hendrix. And after reading that comment I went and bought.... Taste live at Isle of Wight. That's how I discovered Taste. A band that would become legendary. But dumbasses like you have to take comments out of their ass and actually say them to be heard. Take your comment and put it back in your ass. Dumbfuck.
We love you forever Rory...
Sit your arses down and take some notes,Rory is giving you a masterclass in rock guitar here.
This should be a staple on classic rock stations in the United States. Most people here have never even heard of him! Like Gary Moore most of the radio stations are blind to these great artist!
You're Fuckin' right. I've seen Gary Moore 3 times when I was in Germany. Wish I had seen him with Lizzy, but it's all good, just like MSG, Ya never hear much, but it's all good F'in rock. Me, Dave
right you are, I had to discover Rory on my own. I first discovered him on youtube when I just happened to listen to bullfrog blues. I was totally blown away . Why had I never heard of this guy? Needless to say American radio is for shit, but, I'm one yank who loves Rory.
I saw Gary Moore 3 times in the 70's and 80's. I was pleasantly surprised at each show with his performances. Few people under 50 even know who he is. Music has turned to sh*t since the late 80's with a few exceptions in the 90's... Maybe I'm just getting old.
never signed big mainstream record deals is why,if rory joined the stones when he had the opportunity hed be known worldwide. What a legend though, who are his peers, srv?Clapton? Hendrix? same standard if not better, proud to be an irishman
Jamie Harte I think I'm going to contact via email the big classic rock station in my area, & ask why they never play any Rory. He's certainly better than 1/2 the artists they play.
Rory was absolutely incredible. Probably the best ever at his craft ❤ he deserves all the recognition in the world for being one of the all time greats.
The holy trinity of electric blues guitarists; Rory, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn. All three were in their own universes.
+Rory Gallagherfan nicely put--- so incredible
Hendrix actually said Rory was THE master
Spot on brother.
+Rory Gallagherfan Roy Buchanan was as good as all three, maybe better. Check him out.
I am familiar with Roy. Yes, he was a genius and as good as the "holy trinity".
Johnny Winter and Robin Trower are also up there, but for me Rory is number one.
Rory lived for performing didn't matter how many or when he'd play sitting in his suite in the Conrad id be in awe watching him jam he wasn't materialistic and never thought he was superior to anyone and that is a true legend not these pompous idiots who think their demigods
Guitar to melt your face off.
Play this loud.
if you dont get this, you get anything
I’m 59, and I am just hearing this blaster! Wow!
Without one single doubt, an absolute legend... cut short in his prime.
Rori, istinski virtouz... koliko energije i ljubavi. Posle toliko godina niko ni da pokuša da zvuči kao nenadmašni Rori
A perfect example of what live music is all about and being played by three amazing musicians. Pure excellence.
Pure Talent and so teigt the band 🎀
Without a Doubt - A Killer Live Version of this Song. Saw him play in Washington D.C. back in 1972 at a Club - MY MOTHER'S PLACE and he brought the house down - with BULLFROG BLUES at the time. He came out to meet his audience and talk with us after the set - an Amazingly Humble and Wonderful Musician. A Rare Artist.
I can hear where Knopfler got his Sultans of swing from and some of his style, we need mor Rory's and Marks.
+rodsreel interesting note, love them both!
+rodsreel Absolutely!
Doing a little research I found that both Sultans and Shadowplay came out the same year(1978). Whether Rory had the riff 1st or Mark had it we'll never know. But it it hasn't come up in any legal bindings.
Actually the first version of Sultans was recorded aleeady in 1977 (as a demo), wich was aired by the BBC.
rodsreel yes I totally agree, in bad penny you can definitely hear the Irish folk music, this man was amazing
I hate it when people make a comparison between Rory Gallagher and God, I mean he's good but lets face it he's no Rory Gallagher.
Duncanalan43 thats soo old..
I wouldn't have said Rory was the top rock guitarist in the 70's. But he was definitely in the top one.
thanks Dunc that made me chuckle.
@@cgavin1
Well maybe you wouldn't say it. But Jimi Hendrix did.
Okay that's pretty funny. Lmao.
I have never seen this clip before!!! I have loved Rory for over 40 years... this is one of the best videos of him I have seen...great song, too. This is like a gift to me today, thank you. I miss him so much.
What???? Rory himself was both characters he mentions in this song, he had the light and the dark in his soul, that's why this song relates to him. You never heard Shadow Play before, in 40 years? Jesus!!!
@@marcelaoyarce5384 im 58 and australian who loves my music but sadly ive only heard of this man in the last 2 months , bad penny ....boy have i missed out

... she doesn't say she doesn't know the song - she just says ...she's never seen this video before
- this is how I understood it 😉 🍻
I saw Rory in a club in SF in 1978. He was so down to Earth in every way. One of the greatest, and under rated guitarists of all time. I'll never forget that night. Sheer Magic...
oh my god... the quality of this video is ... superb¡ Great guitarist Rory¡
The unbelievably good Rory Gallagher - what a player and equally important - what a band!!
how could that audience be so placid ?????, the man was a genius .
one of the worlds most gifted troubadours of post war era.
They've probably been told to not jump around. You never know with those small studios. Also, 70s Germany.
jock barblessable all stoned!
It's Germany, brother. Watch other 70's rock videos in Germany. They were very conservative.
minds = blown
Ashamed I've never heard of this dude til today...Awesome!
Jay Sullivan I heard about him only 2 years ago... a guy in work put Philby on and that was it, I was hooked.
Now I've got all his albums and I scour youtube for gems like this :-)
Legendary guitarist.
Welcome, this is the pinnacle it doesn't get any better than Rory.
Maybe I’ll play this on Repeat… All Day
Happy Birthday,Rory
2023 -Love to The Otherside ❤
What a great player! He shows a lot and does it with taste, playing strictly for the song. An artist at work.
Totally Amazing! He plays so fucking well! Great song, great musicians.
The night I saw Rory in 1978 he was awesome! I'll never forget it as long as I live. I remember that Gerry McAvoy was one of the greatest Bass players I'd ever seen and that's a tall order. Jack Casady (Bass player for Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) opened with a couple of friends from Hot Tuna and he's one of the renowned Bass players of all time. McAvoy was his equal. RIP-Rory, God Bless...
ich wünschte so sehr ich hätte ihn auch erleben können!!
I saw him in '78 in a little club in Albany NY. Fantastic show. Rory ruled!
He used to come home to Cork over the Christmas / New Year holidays and play a concert in the City Hall.. on New year's eve, like yourself great concert... simpler times...
Wow, shivers down my spine after watching that performance. The man was a genius with the guitar, absolute gold.
Εδώ θα παθαιναμε εμφραγματα και εγκεφαλικα και αυτοί οι ξενέρωτοι κάθονται....χαχαχαχα. Σ'αγαπαμε ΘΕΕ!
First song I've heard of Rory and let me say, this man is the man!!!!
Absolutely breathtaking.
His skills on guitar are so far off the charts they can't be measured iand that awesome signature tone is second to none. There's a handful of players that have a unique sound that is recognizable and strictly there own. He has his in spades. Most of the great players leave us way to soon. Thankfully they left us with a boatload of awesome music....
NO DEJO DE EMOCIONARME CADA VEZ QUE ESCUCHO A RORY ... EL MAS GRANDE, GRACIAS
Every time i listen to and watch his guitar work in this video, it makes goose bumps go up and down my spine. I've been a Rory Gallagher fan ever since someone turned me on to one of his LPs (Blueprint) in the 1970's I've got six of them, and wish I had more. Like it says, he was just such an amazing person, and a hell of a guitar player. The best I've ever seen, in my opinion, and you can see that right here in this video.
rory was my first experience with live rock and roll .blew me away . 1973
Thanks. This is guy is fast becoming my favorite guitarist ever! Too bad he is gone, but what a legacy!
Been a fan since early 70's. Seen him live several times. Yes he was. Really f kn amazing
Many years ago my sister sat me on an old Triumph motorbike that belonged to a friend of my older brothers, many years later i got to ride and fix bikes with this guy, in his garage he never played anything other than Rorys music, what an awesome introduction to Rory it was...touched my soul, then and now, Forever Rory :)
I had no idea that Ted died!!! He was great with Rory and dire straits. Loved his drumming. I loved rod's drumming as well. Rory is just a sick player. Saw him three times in Montreal. 1974 with Rush and Nazareth. Biggest regret? Having to leave early because it was too loud for my date. After that, most of the concerts I attended I went alone. Gerry's bass playing is so good. Rory is beyond legend. He really loved what he did!!!! ❤️❤️
During my life I was very lucky to see this man Rory G and his band many times over the years, it was like going to get the system recharged and facing the world with a brave and clear attitude. To go a Rory Gallagher gig was like walking into a full force hurricane, the power of Rory and his boys would blow you off your feet, often we had to stand up against the walls in the halls for support. It was like going a full 15 rounds with greatest Mohamed Ali. Rory always delivered the quality goods that he had. Nobody could match the mighty RORY
Nitko kao Rory. Živiš u našim srcima. Prošlo je mnogo mnogo godina ,a ja sam sve žedniji tvoje muzike. Jimmy te je uzdigao u nebo. Obojica počivajte u miru Božjem.
Explosions of feelings!!!Masterpiece!
One of the best live acts ever...the audience must be in shock thats the only explanation!!!!
lets start a petition to get this man in the rock n roll hall of fame
No. It was what Rory was against his entire life.
Glenn Canale ......indeed (as I’ve also noted) Rory had *zero* interest in any “commercial” aspect of the music business and to have him in the RRHOF would be a *huge* disservice to the man’s memory. A petition has only recently begun to have Rory inducted into the BLUES Hall of Fame, please sign that one. This is the real thing - genuine Blues artists, many of whom inspired and innovated Rory so to my mind, that’s where this man belongs, amongst *his* heroes.
I watch it again, and again, and again. What a fabulous guitarplayer Rory was!
WOW ... That sounds really good ! This boy sure can play !!!
I'm a big Alvin Lee and ac/dc fan don't get me wrong but they don't change their solos much it's as if they've been cloned. Years ago but Rory can change any solo in any song anytime incredible
THANKS MIKE..........AND THANK GOD FOR HAVING PLEASURE TO HEAR RORY........
Saw Rory in concert many times. First time in a pub opposite the Fairfield Hall Croydon.
His band were promoting the album 'Live In Europe' (1972?) He just stood in the pub and played, NO stage. To watch him and his band play before me was electric.
We are so fortunate to have this............
This video is outstanding! I just saw Ted & Gerry play it this month w/ Davy Knowles in Band of Friends. 40 years later and they crushed it on stage with the same high energy!
Thanks Rory,.........You was (are) the best......Brazilian fan...
On drums Ted McKenna 1950-2019, dead at 68 today 19/01/2019. RIP. cheers to both Rory and his drummer Ted, and best wishes to Gerry McAvoy the last one alive. the one who drives is the one who doesn't drink, please.
...Ted McKenna on the drums, Gary McAvoy on the bass & a bunch of undead in the background
+Her Dying Fiancé Fabulous comment, esp about the undead. I was fortunate to see Rory in Melbourne, Australia in 1980 - they made the music so exciting. And that bashed up Strat. And no pedals. We're sorry for our loss....

Your right their my friend i saw Rory numerous times in the Glasgow Apollo Scotland on the 70s 80 and 90s I've yet to see such a laid back guy who can play like fck knows but what a rythm section to their the best past and present
Just love this , especially his tormented strat ;-) pure and honest rock therefore timeless
His gift to us all was him every time he played live. fortunate to see him in the states. so unpretentious, his ability to play like he did and connect to his audience. I love you Rory RIP
Fantastic footage there indeed, I was fortunate enough to see Rory Gallagher and Taste live many times, and this clip captures him perfectly. He is sadly missed by many people.....
Lucky guy VERY envious :-)
An amazing singer songwriter. And a fabulous performer!
I saw Rory 3 times.. all these years later (I'm 54 now) he still rocks me out.. great video and thank you for making me feel 24 again!
cant belive the audience in this, just sitting there. every show I went to we were all jumping and having a good time.
love you Rory forever. RIP
Absolutely, the best, version I've seen and heard.
A truly incredible talent on the guitar, may he rest in peace and continue to rock in Heaven.
Einfach genial. Ein wascheckte Cork Mann. Ich war von 1978 -1979 auf einem Internat im Cork City. Dort wollte jeder zweite mit mir anlegen. Ich habe gelernt, wie man kämpft wann nichts anders übrig bleibt.
