Seen him in 1977 and 1978 in Antwerp (Arena Hall Deurne). Fantastic shows. Later on, I've met him several times in Antwerp City. He frequently visited THE MUZE, together with his best friend and musician Roland van Campenhout (he's still active as a Wonderfull gitarist). Nice guy was Rory, friendly and very open. Had several chats with him. RIP Rory.
His sound is underground now, I don't know if it was back then in his prime! Only the ones who are fans of him are the ones who really know his work. I admire him in a deep way for his passion and courage for choosing to be who he was.
Just to say the obvious: one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, in one of his greatest performances, performing a song that often brought out the best in him. The Montreux festival version is just as excellent
jimi never cared about beein the most this or that ;simply, so far beyond countless others he even said RORY WAS the best . i agree! incredible explosivity for Ror;y and i like them both equally !
Lol no.. cmon dude dont be a douche. Most people do not agree. Most people are right. Jimi wasthe innovator who played with legends before he became one himself. I love Rory but hes not even close.
Now I will say hes definitely better than Clapton and Page and Beck. Definitely more tasteful. Him and Johnny Winter are so close in my opinion. So close in terms of technique and speed and explosiveness. Jimi was just too creative... I would say Rory is second just because of Jimi's creativity. But you can tell Rory was super creative too especially in this video. I would say Jimi, Angus Young, Rory, Johnny Winter, Clapton and Stevie Ray would be tied. But one guy everyone tends to forget about in this conversation is Angus Young... you wanna talk about explosive guitar players.. Angus takes the whole cake on that one.. So many greats to talk about..
Mind-blowing talent. All from his soul. Seen many good guitarists, but it's not just technique, it is passion and soul that you see in Rory. True natural.
At 2:30 when he alternates back and forth with that nuanced riff (not sure you call it that) is so awesome, just the small change on picking creates an incredible moment (at least for me)
@@MrSaerrock I saw all the great bands in the 70s and of course all of their great guitarists but there was no one to touch Rory. He gave every show 200%, pure, raw talent. I still have the cassette too, taped from FM radio although I copied it on to a CD a couple of years ago.
Played the smallest venues and always gave 120 %. Not also one of the must underrated, but also one of the best guitar players to ever walk this planet. Noone and nothing else moves me as he does.
Hello I agree. The man was a phenomenal, fantastic and a purely gifted guitarist/singer, he was godlike. He was at The Highest Level, above everyone. He is greatly missed by many, many people, including myself. R. I. P. Rory, You Were The Greatest, Fact!! 🫡♥️
The ratio of views vs likes vs dislikes on Rory Gallagher's videos compared to other star musicians says it all ! Rory Gallagher is incomparable and one man army almost without any backup of music mafia biggie agency !
I did see Rory perform in Stockholm, Sweden on three occasions, 1978 and in 1979 and also in 1984. Rory was one of the greatest live performers ever. I will never forget how great he was. Effortless with just a guitar and a small combo amp standing on a chair and a three piece band that played so well together. When he started to play he was just like a fish i water, in his right element. Didn't matter if he played on electric guitar or a mandolin, the audience was mesmerised and spellbound. Truly one of the best ever. In -79 Swedish radio managed to tape the concert. I still have a copy of that radio show. Such a great memory.
He just blows you away with his playing every time doesn't he. It seems anyone who likes Rory's music also has a deep fondness for the man himself. If anyone has a time-machine which can get me back to 1974, can i borrow it please ? Andrew, Wiltshire.
You'll never find a better live version of this song than this one. Fucking pure genius on display. Rory was firing on all cylinders during this concert. Thank fucking god somebody had the sense to record this in such a high quality for the time. One of the best guitar solos of all time.
@@robertcooper411 Personally I'd have to disagree. This was Rory firing on all primal cylinders. He was walking the line of madman and genius during this concert. Just fucking wailing all that energy out. While the Montreux festival is incredible I think all other Gallagher performances pale in comparison to the god he was this night.
Simply a heart full of soul. He never marry and never got childrens, he was allways speaking, thinking, eating living dreamiing music, he diess very young and hes life was full of sacrifices to play and give music, an angel of rock. I always got a strange feeling when I hear Rory. Rip. God bless you.
Not a big live music lover. But this is unbelievable, especially considering the year it was recorded. Not the level of clarity we’re all used to hearing now. This guy is so clean spectacular performance!
An Absolutely Fantastic Performance, From An Absolutely Fantastic Performer and his band of brothers also. They could Absolutely Entertain a crowd, Let's All Hail, Rory, Gerry and Ted.👏👏👏🎶🔥🎸🌟💚🇨🇮🤟
Thankfully there is so much video of Rory performing his magic. It’s almost like God said although you’re here now, the people will continue to see your greatness!
That was what it was back in our day, we go to college to see Rory and his boys and get the education to last us a life time from this MASTER, been in his classroom was the very best When you have some spare time click on to RUclips and watch this human hurricane in action, The Master Musician Rory Gallagher and his boys going to town at full speed. There never was/is and never will be anyone like the great Rory.
Ive had a few beers and some Tequila and i REALLY enjoyed seeing Rory again...OMG watching him go across the stage was always a pleasure live.....Big Ted on drums. RIP my friends you are really missed
Every time I hear a new Rory song, I'm just simply amazed. This is the fourth version of shadowplay all live that I've heard, in each one is incredibly special on its own way, I couldn't do a one two three four, they're all number 1 6:44
If I had a time machine first trip I would make would be to get front row live in 79.... The passion and emotion that flows into his fingers.. speechless
Irish National Foresters Hall Hilltown N.Ire 1978 only about 500 in a hall that could hold 2,500 he played solid for at least 3hours .Mans a legend.!!;
His use of changing the the tone and volume is only equaled by Jeff Beck but in a totally different way of course, he creates the wawa sound using the tone. And he makes it look so simplistic the average non guitarist would never know what he's doing
2:21 the real deal if there is something like that- he is/was the epitaph of rock god [cant believe just recently discovered him and it is feel likes he always was there]

If you listen to different live versions of this song each solo sounds totally different yet they're all mind-blowing! Rory is simply the best
he changed some parts in the verses too over the years , pretty cool
His sound is underground now, I don't know if it was back then in his prime! Only the ones who are fans of him are the ones who really know his work. I admire him in a deep way for his passion and courage for choosing to be who he was.
Rory is the 🐐

Just wonderful...He is up playing to The Great lord...!!!
È impressionante, non ci sono aggettivi per spiegare la sua bravura, come lui nessuno ci sarà.
🎵🎵🔌thats what happens when a human being makes love with a musical instrument 🎸🎸🎵
It's apologies to Jimi, Johnny, Duane, and countless others but Rory was the best, most explosive Blues Rock guitarist of all time.
jimi never cared about beein the most this or that ;simply, so far beyond countless others he even said RORY WAS the best . i agree! incredible explosivity for Ror;y and i like them both equally !
Jimi came from outer space to blow our minds, Rory came from Cork to rock our world.

Couldn’t Agree more! Got to see him a couple times in Michigan at a smaller venue & was phenomenal! So glad I was able to see them in person👍😊
i get so emotional when he plays the solo i just cry because i miss him so much
same here my friend
I think a lot of people do. Sometimes I watch a video.and I.just cry. Rory was magical.
i thought it was only me
Same here😪
Rory is the best guitar player world will ever meet
I think hes close but if there's a guitarist I'd put above Rory it would be Buckethead
@@theherbpufferover Rory are you insane ?
@@SeanG1916buckets not bad though. Like to hear Rory take a pass at Willy wonky or the candy man like bucket did. Love Rory
Best guitar solo ever. No contest!
Amazing stuff!! Dry sound, hard n tight performance. The bassist is a beast,to keep that going tirelessly takes some doing.
The immortal King of irish Bluesrock
That audience saw a great show

Absolutely 🤘

He’s doing pinch harmonics on that little riff. It creates a pretty awesome sound. Rory was an insane player.
I taped this onto a cassette the day it was on the TV and radio in 1979, still have it, still play it, Rory was up there with the best
Hell yeah man! Thats awesome!
Regarded as The Best by some of the best.. Brian May, Alex Lifeson & reportedly Jimi Hendrix amongst others

I thought I already had a favourite version of Shadow Play, then I listened this one and guess what.
I just heard Shadow Play and then a song by Bonamassa .. compared to Rory my feet fall asleep.

Watch live ar Montreux version. It's like 12 minutes or so . And he goes off. It's the best version of this song
The G-Man on fire. Goosebumps... and tears.
The best guitar solo all times!
Yes
Blistering - total attack and attitude. Just brilliant.
Rory was......RORY...one of a kind.
10 years into his song writing career, Rory still created such a fantastic song. A huge hit for me.
SO FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ version!!!!!!!!!!!
Rory is in full flight, the best guitarist ever. Thank you for the upload ❤
The dude could play the guitar just like ringing a bell as once said Mr. Chuck Berry!
As much as I love Chuck Berry he wouldn't lace Rorys shoes.
What a stunning pose at 2:25, swinging from left to right, center stage. His body and soul are playing in unison, musical oneness.
Hell yes. Just sensational.
