I don’t think it’s cool for them to call them radials when they clearly are not. Also they obviously are putting a lot of marketing Euros into them, looking at how many channelsmare talking about them now (compared to when they came out). The tires themselves may be fine and even the best in some conditions.
I know I know, but could you please put pressures in psi, at this low pressure the graduations are more relevant. Ps Im a Mech Eng Tech and I dont care what someone says to you at certain values other measurements work better. 1 bar = 14.504 psi approx.
I totally agree. It's ridiculous to use "bar" pressure numbers on anything under 50 PSI when a couple psi can be the difference between grip and no grip.
I’d like to see a side by side comparison of Schwalbe bias vs Schwalbe radial, same tread & compound. One climbing traction statement doesn’t address tire feel when pushed. Remember car radials came to market with fantastic grip, but went from 100% to none like a switch. The Bias-P guys slid more predictably. This changed over time with radials far surpassing the bias designs in most aspects. So, tell me more about feel please. Compounds will remain terrain specific, as are the casings. Sandstone vs organic/loam/roots have different tire needs. Recently, I mounted a pair of Kryptotal fr and re Enduro Soft tires onto my Rise. They are excellent overall and are wearing so much better than the DHF/DHR-IIs’ and with better (for me) grip. Grip is not feel, with me not liking the feel of fr as it drifts predictably until it folds then oversteers into the apex. I’ll switch the re to the front and try that before I surrender. Oh well… I wanted to try the new Schwalbes but they weren’t available yet. Now in stock the prices are +30$ over every thing else😮. Give it a moment and every brand will adopt a version of radial designs to their products. 🎉Finally more good choices than tpi and layers in casings. 🎉
I wonder how these Shreddas are compared to the Eddy Currents. I have put about 4,000 mi on my Eddy Currents, and they are about the end of their life, but have been a great tire. I've never had a puncture or a pinch flat. Mine are about dry rotted and require a lot of sealant to keep them going at this point, but they still work with about 25% tread left. The Eddy Currents were specifically designed for e-MTBs. Are the Shreddas designed for an e-bike as well?
I ride the desert in the SW USA so I gotta watch out for rocks, I’ve ridden the Magic Mary and the knobs grind down almost immediately. Just installed a new Maxxis DHR 2 on my Canyon Torque ON as these tend to weather in the dry rock better.
Trying something new this spring. Always ridden on Maxxis, but just received Magic Mary Radial super soft and Albert Radial Soft for my new Nobl wheelset. See what that can do.
A week ago I swapped out my old tyres being Magic Mary on the front and Hans DAMPF on the back after 7000 kilometres of us on my Scott EMTB for two new Albert super gravity ultra soft tyres and tried them out in similar technical up hill location like Steve. Guess what I had the same reaction, these are definitely an improvement I would go so far as to say they are an innovation.
Great tyre Steve if you’re in the lucky position to swap out tyres/wheels but for us average Joes, what would you recommend for a tyre that covers the majority of conditions (excluding the extremes at either end of the scale) where you are doing long trail rides with a mixture of technical climbs, downhill, and most in between across wet and dry(ish) conditions? Cheers 😎
Can see that radial tires may work well for those in the wet UK and Pacific Northwest of the US...But not so sure about that applying to the rest of us. Cheers!
I use Scorpion™ E-MTB R tires and I swear by them for the rocks and dry conditions here in Queensland Australia. Strong side walls allow me to run low pressure and great traction.
I’ve recently put an Albert gravity on the back of my Whyte E160. First ride was on partially snowy ground, so not going very fast, but felt good. Second ride was on Innerleithen DH trails. Conditions were good and the tyre felt amazing. Ran 31psi and a rimpact pro. (I was running 27psi in a big Betty before). After nearly 2 hours of turbo smashing DH runs I went for a quick run of the bottom of the trail centre descent to finish off. I landed normally off a small fade away type jump and put a big hole in the top of the tyre on landing. Not too impressed for a gravity tyre. Maybe I was super unlucky. Big hole too, took 2 plugs to fix it. Tyre felt amazing on the trails, but they may have been 2 expensive rides if the plugs don’t hold.
Are there any tyres that can deal with deep, sticky clay? In deepest Sussex, my bikes get clogged up as the clay seems to defeat any “self-clearing” tread patterns. And once I get out of the clay bogs, I have “green” chalk to get up the escarpment of the South Downs. Perfect in the dryer seasons, but neither are much fun in the winter. Currently running with Vitorria e-mazza front and rear.
Wicked Wills are awesome on my Turbo Levo. Tire choice depends a lot on where you ride. Aggressive treads, like those shredder or big lug tires, roll over too much for our SE Michigan sandy to hard pack trails. I've tried tons of brands and pressures, and the Wicked Wills are the best.
Climbing comes down to technique more than anything else. I dont care if you have an e-bike or analog. Do tires matter? Of course they do as well as the proper psi. But with everything in place it all comes down to the rider. Hope everyone has a great weekend! See you on the trails!
I live in the Utah desert where I do most of my biking. Mud here is a rarity. I'm currently running Magic Marys on my Vala and wondering if the Schwalbes will benefit me.
Sounds good but what is the reality behind it? In truth; it’s more biking blather for more exotic pricing to people. Standard tyres cost enough as it is, £80 on average UK. If Schwalbe get the pricing down then they’ll clean the market up. But doubt they’ll ever do that and doubt these tyres live up to the typical hype like everything else especially given Schwalbe sponsor EMTB ffs!
Sadly no manufacturer is ever going to do us a favour and look after their customers through competitive pricing when they can away with screwing you over like they do with any item associated with mtb and emtb
I think mostly hype about the radial design. Years of testing MX tires tells me that the compound and the tread pattern will have more to do with the way a tire works. After cutting a couple old Maxxis and Schwalbe tires apart it appears they were of radial ply design anyways. I expect the new design probably has a bigger cross pattern, but the real difference will be in the layers they are constructed of. A thinner, but more durable and puncture resistant layer will allow the goofball low pressures without the usual associated issues.
Look good but I'll stick to my 2.6 Michelin E-Wild tyres on my Reign e+ with CushCore's fitted. I can run them with pretty low pressures. When the e-wild's wear out, I might try the Shredda's...but cost will be a BIG issue.
After some looking at different brans I came back to Maxxis Dhr2/dhf combination running 24psi front 26/28psi rear, with inserts. It works fine for the riding I do. The radial is certaily a brilliant development, but I dont think it will mean much for me - then cost will come into it. Interested but not convinced for general riding.
Sounds ideal to stop my back wheel spinning out over wet roots, are soft compund tyres in general better for gripping wet roots? Thanks for info Steve & Embn! 😁
Semi spike year round in the UK, maybe something fast rolling on the rear for 2/3 weeks in the “summer” 😅 I’m personally a big fan of the Continental Argotal’s, always loved a magic mary though so will be keen to give these radial tyres a go when these conti’s are dead
I am riding the goodyear newtons, same kind of hard carcass with soft huge knobs, only the tread design looks more easy rolling than these schwalbes. Anyway, what really makes the difference when climbing technical trails is... guess what??? Technic, which you cannot buy and costs lots of effort and time to conquer.
Ive got Radials on a Jam Squared on test and honestly I cant tell or feel any difference compared to a normal tyre when riding around normally when just getting on the bike and riding. If there is a difference? The only way to tell would be back to back testing with another brand of tyre say a Maxxis equivalent or the new Goodyear. So I would say its hard to do a video like this and say anything really unless you take the word of any tester as biblical. So in this case I would like to see Alan from MBR on them and hear his biblical words...
7:26 Mud step? There aren't even tire tracks in the ground you just rode, it's that compact and dry. Have someone empty a camelbak bladder on some roots then show us.
Aggree on how tyres will change your life but have had nothing but bad experience with schwalbe tyres tearing knobs of and being told buy the importer thats thats normal wear , total bullshit after 50km and twenty knobs ripped of thats crap . At the moment the specialized hillbilly 2.6 is my favorite tyre for loose terrain up and down there pretty bloody good and there cheap .
Too bad this is so one sided. From the video there is no comparison to other like non-radial tires. Maybe these tires are the greatest tires ever but this sure does not prove it. Pretty crappy journalism.
It depends on how important riding (e)mtbs are to you. I have a high stress occupation & the 1.5hr. I get to ride..IS..my biggest stress relief. As such, if getting any new part can make a significant difference to the quality of those rides...to me...they have indeed changed MY life. I've had a set of radial MMs since the Spring & every time I get on the bike the added speed & confidence just brightens my day & takes me further away from my grind. To some, riding a bike faster might seem trivial, but to me, it's important & anything that improves that experience means a lot. The significance of riding may not mean anymore to you than seeing a good movie or enjoying a pleasant talk with friends; but you aren't the arbiter of anyone else's riding experience. It's not hyperbolic the difference these tires make.....try them before judging.
What do you think of the new Scwalbe Shredda tyres? Let us know in the comments!
I don't think Schwalbe ever made a bad tyre (other than the kojaks)
I use Big Apples on my hybrid and have used motto plus too.
Looks like a WTB verdict wet. So, it should be good.

Look who has got a new sponsor. Feel free to send the surplus Pirelli's my way 👍
Lmao 😊
Sign me up for Pirelli’s too 😊
Same ole troll , mind ... brrrrp🤘🏻🤘🏻🦖💨
Pirelli make great tyres, we've had great days on them. This is more of.a niche mud tyre. Haha, surplus you say (jones)
Rather pay than have free pirelli @@embn
I have Schwalbe MM Radial on my Amflow and they made almost as much of an impression on me as getting the Amflow itself! Serious rubber everyone
Front and back?

I put on a set of Alberts. Only got in one ride before the deep freeze arrived, but wow. The hype is real.
My mate has just fitted a set of shreddas, find out tomorrow what they ride like 🎉
Enjoy!

There should be a blooper reel at the end of every vid, would loved to see the failed grip over roots instead of a perfect grip message.

These shredda's look great. My folding road e-bike has Schwalbe's, they have been faultless.
More choice bluming eck Steve so which radial tyres do we choose
now for most every day trail riding now we have a shredder , albert and mary ?????

great for having fun off road but how long would they last if i put them on my bike that i use for both riding the trails and riding TO the trails?

My bike came with27.5 2.8 tires and ive stuck with that . what benifit would i get from going to a 2.6 or 2.5 if any?
Riding 3 months, exelent for soft & mud terrain but high rolling resistance...
Overall is fantastic for my type of riding👍

What do these tires do with range? Is it significantly low because of more contact patch?
There's definitely a trade off between range and grip (jones)
@embn so answer is yes... I fully understand that schwalbe is your new sponsor, but mention about range in video will be fair.

Wow, 1.6 sounds road-ish.

The latest BS. Just means you need much higher pressures to prevent pinch flats, which defeats the flex. Chicken, egg.
