Its funny when the country is under attack, like in ww2 the king was the first one to leave. Reminds me of some child in GOT. And when the war is over he is the first one to return to take back the throne.
You kill him/her or depose in such a way that there is no coming back for them and/or their heirs too and destroy badges of office, often times you kill the country in the case of monarchies. There are plenty of well-documented examples. That's one reason why when attacked you get them out ASAP if possible. This is one place republics have an advantage. Even if an enemy does kill off the elected government, that by itself won't kill the country as new leaders will emerge from the populace in one form or another. Republics have no concept or made taboo the concept of central, familial church anointed/legitimatized leader. Whilst you get stability with a monarchy you also have a very big, visible and foundation-level/keystone target. Knock that out, the whole thing collapses or at the very least huge demoralization. Most republics, even if you kill off the president, vice-president et al, there will always be some kind of decentralized public official to be the leader with no familial lines to make easier to track down and kill as opposed to house rules of inheritance often dependent on gender, types of marriage, which line one is descended from or all of the above to determine who is the legitimate ruler. Once you get rid of your enemy, have to reestablish order ASAP. Republics as far as modern history goes can do that relatively faster than a monarchy be it democratically, a coup, the military, combination of all the the above good or bad. The English/British are the exceptions because A: as stickler for tradition as they are, they are also open to change when the need demands and B: the one time they tried republican rule, Cromwell didn't go after Charles I's family or close relatives nor really put major obstacles to bar his heirs from returning or reestablishing the monarchy which of course they did. Evil also learns from history and those facts were not lost on Lenin and the Bolsheviks and therefore did what Cromwell did not.
If I remember a few norwegian history , the King and the Crown Prince went to the north of the country to coordinate the resistence that went on during eight weeks . Only after they went abroad. The same made Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands who went to Canada. Not the same made King Leopold of the Belgians who , with his family, was taken prisoner for some years till the end of the war and whose choice to remain was not well considered by the Belgians and he was, after some years of turbulence , obbliged to abdicate. There was of course also King Christian in Denmark who rode on his horse every morning through Copenanghen streets with the ebraic star on his jacket, there was also the King of Italy , who, when the war was lost, was considered escaping his responsabilities. The relative recent Romanov's tragedy , and the convintion that it was far better for the future of their Countries go away instead to be considered " co-working " with the nazi regime installed made the choice. At the light of the facts it seems to have been the right choice. They returned in their Countries well accepted, the Belgians choice another King ( Bouduen) , and Italy became a Repubblic.
