  • To celebrate the 100th episode of campaign 2 let's look back and see just how far the Mighty Nein have traveled!
    Thank you Matt Mercer, Devan Rue, and the entire cast and crew of Critical Role.
    EDIT- A lot of people are asking if I can make one for campaign 1. The answer is that I would LOVE to! But I don't want to make it until we know what Issylra looks like since that is one of the continents they visit ;) -Rin

      How else do you think they would keep encountering those same bandits?

    • @B3RyL
      @B3RyL 4 года назад +64

      Well, that's how people travel. They don't just go on random treks through wilderness whenever they have some business in another town. It's safer and faster to travel via popular roads. It's a kind of a path of least resistance. You can even see it on a local level whenever you see footpaths through the parks and forests developed by hundreds of people traversing those same routes back and forth. They don't always go straight to where you want to go, but if you average it out, it's the path of least resistance to get from any one point to any other point in that area. There's even a science that deals with this very phenomenon (preferred paths people take to get from point A to point B under certain circumstances) but I forget what it's called. I know it's used by urban development specialists to plan roads, bike lanes, footpaths, bus and metro lines, and even fire escape routes. It's really quite fascinating how counter-intuitive it can be sometimes.

    • @Vespuchian
      @Vespuchian 4 года назад +56

      They might be major highways, but Matt falls into the common DM trap of forgetting about everything that's not explicitly on the map, like all the little farming towns and villages that should be strung along those highways at how-far-you-can-walk-in-a-day intervals. Small wonder everyone gets super-focused on whatever other road traffic Matt highlights, it's the _only_ other thing on the road other than them. It's one of my few recurring pet peeves with the show, mostly in the early episodes (like how Matt calls anything with wheels a 'cart' (2 wheels) even though the MN are explicitly and repeatedly described riding a wagon (4 wheels)).

    • @B3RyL
      @B3RyL 4 года назад +38

      @@Vespuchian Good catch. Villages often developed by way of a couple of families moving up the road far enough so that they had enough room to grow crops and not intrude on the other towns and villages, but still close enough so that they could go to church on Sundays, trade at a nearby market or visit their friends for holidays and celebrations. So yes, the roads between major settlements should be a little more lively than just a highway cutting through the wilderness. As for the cart vs wagon thing, I admit even I was confused on the terminology until now. Thanks for explaining the difference.

    • @danilooliveira6580
      @danilooliveira6580 4 года назад +23

      that is one of many common problem I see with fantasy/medieval world building, but I just imagine the villages and farms are a LOT bigger and sprawl a lot more following the roads than Matt makes it sound like. lack of traffic only bother me less than isolated castles with no cities or farms around to feed the people.

    roshona y the m9 home, they always return to that place after finishing something. is cool because at the start of the campign that was the less likely place for the nein to be their base of operations, zadash was clearly the better candidate. but is actually well tought to have the base there, since the nein have powerful enemies in the empire but the dinasty is at worst neutral to them.
    im sure that matt is not looking forward to when caleb graduates from having to drawn on the floor to travel.

    I never realized how close they got to Rumblecusp during their first journey at sea, it makes me wonder if Matt would've made Vokodo weaker so a level 7 party would stand a chance against him.

    • @VegetaLF7
      @VegetaLF7 3 года назад

      Apparently some version of the Rumblecusp adventure had been planned since before Critical Role even started, back when they were still playing their home game. Marisha gave Matt her backstory for Keyleth and he noted the whole "missing mother and presumed dead while on a world adventure" thing and decided she's probably trapped on an island somewhere. It took a few years and two campaigns but he finally got to pull that out. Had Vox Machina pursued that story thread, they'd have encountered Vokodo too, though he'd probably geared up more for their levels.
