I grew up Seventh Day Adventist and was able to study my way out of the cult. When you are taught your whole life that the devil will cause many to fall away from the one true church in the "last days", leaving becomes very scary. Your eternal salvation is on the line. If you are not keeping the Sabbath after knowing the "truth" there is no hope for you. It is hard when you were programed since birth to look at the religion objectively and feel confident in your decision to reject it. This series will help so many feel more comfortable in leaving high demand religions and teaches them how to take a critical look at what they believe. Thank you

@@catmeow333 they know some people will "fall off the path" so they make it a part of the end time events. It has been the end times for the Adventist church since 1844 and people have been leaving since the great disappointment. Crazy how many stayed and how many people still join a cult founded on failed prophecy. But the it is the Devil blinding us to the truth if we leave and because they tell us many will be pulled away in the end times it gives the churches such power to make us terrified of the consequences of leaving and rejecting the one way to heaven. It is why so many people stay and continue to follow the guidelines they were raised with. They longer and farther you get from the brainwashing the clearer you see the control and manipulation.

@@catmeow333 Isn't it amazing to have these forum's to gain insight and strength from other who have been in a similar situation? I find it fascinating to listen to Mormons, JW, Adventists and others share their experiences and how they figured out it was all a lie. The stories of others help me so much because without knowing others who have left brainwashing and indoctrination you feel so alone and I think that can be the hardest to overcome. The community aspect of the cults is what a lot of people seek when they join and have the hardest time leaving. Occasional doubt is not unhealthy, I think it is good to go back when you have those feelings and read or watch something that you know is untrue about the cult. When I have doubts, I think about the ?prophet? Ellen White saying things like people who smoke wont be in heaven, or that women should wear dresses with pants under them. Weird little crazy things that, if you are still Christian, are not biblical. It renews my faith in myself that I made the right decision when I left. The harsh self judgement is so hard to overcome and not having the rules feels strange. I love that we can all relate to the feelings you are having! You are a part of a huge community of EX's and we are all healing together by sharing our stories.

I understand what John means when he says that Mormonism "isn't as bad" as Scientology, but as was said in a previous episode, "wanting to die is wanting to die". It doesn't matter how nicely the news was delivered to you that you should not exist and your natural being is a sin.
That being said, I think I would have flunked out of Scientology as a teen. But I could see myself being a hardcore dedicated Mormon for decades. I could have suppressed my unholy thoughts about Angelina Jolie as a kid, but my life would have been torture internally, and I would have hated being a stay-at-home young mother more than anything. Sometimes when listening to Mormon Stories, I feel like a ghost of another life walks through me and I shudder with who I might have been.
Having been very close to a group Mormons when I was young, I am shocked by all of these stories. I only ever saw the shiny happy plastic distractions they wanted me to see. These are often impossibly difficult stories to tell, but I am grateful I am able to listen.

I was born into Mormonism, and reading your comment, I feel a ghost of a life I could have had without Mormonism, and it kinda breaks my heart. It's so nice to think about someone who had the other path and is now listening to these stories with empathy. Oh, and I too had a crush on Angelina 😂

I remember being 6 or 7 and wishing I could die (in a car accident or something hopefully painless) before I was baptized as I'd heard those that died before they could be baptized (anyone under 8) would automatically go to the celestial kingdom. I wasn't depressed or bullied...just religious scrupulosity.

I came across Luna's book in trying to understand mormons since I am a nonmormon living all around mormons in southern Utah. One of the practices of mormons that makes me not trust mormons is their "friendshipping" process. We were dropped as "friends" because we were not buying the morman faith and did not act on the invites to church. We now look at active members as superficial and devious.

When you make people feel “Special” and therefore elite, you can exercise enormous control over them. Generally people want to be highly thought of, and will do almost anything to keep their status. “ The One True “ church endlessly feeds this narrative to members making them sycophants to the “Brethren”. BINGO. Great podcast yet again. 👌🏽

Even if one does not consider the breakdown of coercive techniques, people who are mentally healthy, living happy lives without major challenges/hardships, are far more difficult to lure into cults than those who are not. They are also better able to think logically than submit to any kind of pressure, or be in need of material and/or financial help.

This is my second time through this episode and this question popped up again for me, what exactly constitutes “true motherhood”? Some of the phrases the church leaders use are so loaded with vague but important sounding words. “True motherhood” strikes me as one of those. Women will fill in the meaning of that, and you know it’s going to be something that is lofty, probably unattainable for that person because we are always fed messages that we could be doing more and doing it better than we are now. Someone could take it to mean bearing biological children and that’s super problematic too, so emotionally harmful.
