    Let’s be clear Pete Maravich didn’t retire because of Larry bird. He had severe knee problems. He also was living with a congenital heart defect his whole life unbeknownst to him. He was born without his left atrial artery in his heart. Basically a very important part of the heart and his right atrial artery was overgrown in order to compensate. Which is what he died from at 40. The numbers pistol Pete put up in college and the nba are that of legends and he deserves respect. Plus he was 9 years older than Bird and nearing the end of his career while Bird was nearing his peak.
    Larry Bird actually has great admiration for Pete. Although you wouldn’t be able to tell from this video.

    • @DarkLinkAD
      @DarkLinkAD Год назад +6

      He wouldnt be alive if he was born with an artial artery. Probably announced wrong by the media, he likely just had a hole in his heart. Its normal in the womb but its supposed to shrink on its own at birth, some people, especially premature babies, have this issue.

    • @MyBohemianDreams
      @MyBohemianDreams Год назад +9

      OK, Let's understand something about Pete's college records. He was a great shooter but his dad was the coach at LSU. LSU had a losing record all three years that Pete was there. He was fun to watch because your team was winning by 30 points. Who cared that Pete got 60+ when your team got 100. I was in school at Alabama when Pete was at LSU. We loved to play them cause LSU had one play, pass to Pete. Pete averaged 44 and the rest of the team averaged 15. I think Pete had his own personal record against Bama his senior year and Bama won by 20+.

    • @cody0126a
      @cody0126a Год назад +16

      @@DarkLinkAD this is straight from his Wikipedia page: "An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a rare congenital defect; he had been born with a missing left coronary artery, a vessel that supplies blood to the muscle fibers of the heart. His right coronary artery was grossly enlarged and had been compensating for the defect."

    • @cody0126a
      @cody0126a Год назад +29

      @@MyBohemianDreams Pete played Alabama 6 times. LSU beat them 4-6. Lsu only lost by 2 in one game and by 3 in the other. So idk where you’re getting your 20+ point loss stats at. He never lost a game in college by 20+ points. And also, the year before Pete played at LSU (1966-1967) their record was 3-23. And 6-20 the year before that. The next three years when he played are: (1967-1968) 14-12, (1968-1969) 13-13, and (1969-1970) 22-10. So they also never had a losing season while he played there. So again what are you talking about? He single handily turned that team around. He also has the 4th highest assist average in LSU basketball history so he wasn’t just a ball hog like everybody thinks. He was a one man wrecking crew.
      Also: Maravich's long-standing collegiate scoring record is particularly notable when three factors are taken into account:
      First, because of the NCAA rules that prohibited him from taking part in varsity competition during his first year as a student, Maravich was prevented from adding to his career record for a full quarter of his time at LSU. During this first year, Maravich scored 741 points in freshman competition.
      Second, Maravich played before the advent of the three-point line. This significant difference has raised speculation regarding just how much higher his records would be, given his long-range shooting ability and how such a component might have altered his play. Writing for ESPN.com, Bob Carter stated, "Though Maravich played before the 3-point shot was established, he loved gunning from long range." It has been reported that former LSU coach Dale Brown charted every shot Maravich scored and concluded that, if his shots from three-point range had been counted as three points, Maravich's average would have totaled 57 points per game and 12 three-pointers per game.
      Third, the shot clock had also not yet been instituted in NCAA play during Maravich's college career. (A time limit on ball possession speeds up play, mandates an additional number of field goal attempts, eliminates stalling, and increases the number of possessions throughout the game, all resulting in higher overall scoring.)

      Yes Pistol Pete was absolutely one of the greatest of all time. I don't feel he gets the recognition he deserves sometimes. His NBA career was somewhat short because of his knees and health. Yes the heart issue being there could have had something to do with his knees going bad because of blood supply, when running and under loads. I have been a Pistol fan, even though I didn't grow up watching him, I realized who he was from the movie Pistol Birth of a Legend. I had some videos that showed Legends of the game, he was in there. He played at a time when the three point line didn't exist. They've gone back figured out if it had existed he would have averaged somewhere between 35-40 pts per game. WOW!

      Nice channel. As great as Bird was though, Magic was a little better.
      In the NCAA championship game or at least before it you left out the part where the MSU coach gave the ball to Magic and said you’re Larry Bird and then told the MSU guys to guard him.
      Magic was the lighting his teammates up. Magic is quite humble. In reality what was occurring is that the MSU teammates knew they had their own Larry Bird and they also had Greg Kelser and others.
      There was no way Larry Bird could play any better than Magic did in practice.
      Magic deferred his game to Kareem in his early years.
      Both had great careers but Magic got 5 titles and Bird 3. Magic went to the NBA finals 9 times.
      But now here is where Michael Jordan comes into play. Both Magic and Bird could beat a “young” Michael Jordan.
      I think both would admit that neither Bird nor Magic could beat a 1993 or 1996 version of Michael Jordan.
      But on the other hand I don’t think any Bulls team could beat the 1986 Celtics nor the 1987 Lakers.
      However the best team ever is the 2001 Lakers championship team. Nobody could match up to them.
      Shaq
      Horace Grant / Robert Horry
      Fox
      Kobe / Shaw
      Fisher
      They went 15-1 in the playoffs. Swept the Spurs with Duncan.
      Most agree Michael Jordan is the goat.

      @JoeKool5738 Год назад

      @@swallman I don't know that ruined, is the right word. But, definately changed the game. Shooting a 3 pointer takes a lot of skill. I remember Dell Curry. He shot like Steph. The bigger change is no hand checking, hard fouls, physical play. I love Steph, but he would get killed in the old days. Casual fans want scoring. Only a purist apprciates good tough defense. Same in baseball and football. Casual fans don't appreciate a defensive struggle or pitcher's duel.
      I wanted to say one more thing. I think MJ is the GOAT of that generation, but to be fair I only saw the end of the careers of Oscar Robertson, Wilt, Pistol, Russell. We really only can say best of their time. Scottie, MJ most of the greats think its an an unfair question. Pippin said if he had to pick he would say Wilt. Mj leans toward Russell. Guys who played against MJ, Kobe and Le Bron usually say MJ. JABAR was unstopable. AI probably best under 6'2". Great story about Phil Jackson asking an old MJ to talk to Kobe who hadn't learned yet not to domianate the entire game. MJ and Jackson are there when Kobe arrives, the 1st thing out of Kobe's mouth was, I can beat you one on one. But Kobe learned from MJ and MJearned from Worthy, Magic, Larry Dr. J.
      AND to my friend who thinks Magic was better than MJ, I was at the all the Chicago championship games in Chicago. Yes, after game 1, Phil put Scottie on Magic and made a difference. The Lakers had no Kobe, Kareem or Riley, but Magic, Worthy, Perkins, Divac and A.C. Green were great. And in game 3 Jackson put Jordan back on Magic. What Phil did was switch the two best young defenders on an older Magic and wore him out. Btw, none of the players pick Magic as the GOAT but he was the nicest guy of the best and a great player and ambassador, but not my top 5. In that series Magic's line was 8 rb, 12.4 assists and 18.6 pts. One game he had 20 assists(that game MJ had 10)
      MJ's line was 6 rb, 11.4 assists and 31.2 pts.
      The 1st game in Chicago the Bulls were tight. It was down to the wire. Mj did not throw up an air ball, but hit back rim. Pippin then had a chance and hit rim. Perkins hit a 3 pointer and that was game. In game 2 MJ changed hands in mid air from right to left as 3 Lakers including Magic had him walled off. No one had every seen that b4. I was astonished. Even Magic has said in interviews he knew then MJ was the new best player. The Bulls outplayed the Lakers is every phase, the next 3 games in LA. The torch had passed from Larry and Magic to MJ. Its not like B.J. Armstrong, John Paxon, Horace Grant, Bill Cartwright, Craig Hodges or Will Perdue were hall of famers.
      The game is different in different eras so its impossible to pick Wilt over MJ, Bird over Russell or LeBron over Jabar. Its fun for us mere mortals to talk about. Most of us tried to play the game so know how spectacular these guys could play. I WILL say only one of the top ten says he's the GOAT. LeBron James. I think its got to be up to the players who played against them, the coaches and fans. None of the other players say they are the GOAT. Maybe its the sign of the times.

    At around the 2:18 mark you mention the turn around won/loss record of the Celtics from the 78-79 season compared to his rookie, 79-80 season. You also mention the players that came on after his rookie season when they really dominated. But to totally understand that remarkable turnaround is the fact that if you check the players from both seasons you'll find that they were basically almost all the same players, the only difference was Larry Bird joined them. Look up the rosters of those two Celtic season and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. The reason I checked that out was because I seen an interview where Charles Barkley mentioned something or other that Bird had a great supporting cast and that's why the Celtics were so good during his playing days. So I went and double checked his rookie season because I knew the year prior the Celtics only won about 30 games or so which made the Sir Charles comment about Bird having a great supporting cast partially true. But as you can see for yourself the turnaround season the Celtics had when he came on board. Not to mention Bird's College, the Indiana State Sycamores and how they took off after Bird joined the team. They went from 13 and 12, to 25 and 3 when Bird came on the scene in '76.

    I was a DePaul Blue Demon fan in 1979. That team wasn't super deep but had Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings and some very good players like Clyde Bradshaw, Teddy Grubbs and Skip Dillard. That final four was the best final four ever, imo. Magic Johnson and Michigan State, the DePaul team, Larry Bird and Indiana State and Ivy league Penn who had to beat North Carolina, Syracuse and St Johns to get to the final four. DePaul lost 76-74 to Larry Bird and Indiana State on some missed free throws. Larry had one of the best college games I ever sawbin person. Michigan State beat Penn to set up the championship game between Magic and Larry. Michigan State double teamed Larry thoughout the game and Magic had a magnificent game. The two of them, then saved the NBA with the Lakers and Celtics meeting several times for the NBA championship as Dr. J started slowing down. When the dream team was formed both Magic and Bird were at the end of their careers and Michael Jordon was in his prime. But during the run toward the gold medal those players not only dominated they put on one last great show. But that 1979 final four was still the best final I ever saw. Yeah, if Kobe played with Bird, Bird would have done the same thing. Bird might have told him to stop putting up bricks and give up the ball. Bird's the GOAT and all others are just mortals.

      Interesting perspective with Kobe.

      Kobe was a complete ball hog. Bird was great at being a great passer. Assists.

      @@jameshines6486 I just looked it up, statistically Bird was better than Kobe in ALL categories.

      MJ is the goat. Bird even said so. He's top 5 tho.

    If you are good, you don't make excuses about your youth, inexperience, or body smallness. In today's NBA, many rookies, sophomores and juniors are given much latitude to their growth, development and promising FUTURE. Magic and Bird treated their rookie years the same as when they were 10 years after.

    Nicely done. Very neutral and fair. LB and MJ. Not a NBA fan nowadays but in the 80’s, this battle was classic. A lot of talent
