- In part 4 of our Amawaterways Amadara Mekong River Cruise it is a very emotional day as we start exploring Cambodia's dark past by visiting S21 prison and the Killing Fields. On a happier note we are treated to some traditional Cambodian entertainment and enjoy specialty dining at the Chef's Table.
We cruised on Amadara in February 2024 and had the most amazing time.
Make sure you check out our review of 3 types of cabins on board Amadara - • Amawaterways Amadara R... and our ship tour too

Thank you Paul and Carole for your very respectful vlog. It made me cry, we should all be aware of the facts. It truly makes me aware of how lucky I have been. ❤❤
Exactly. So sad!
Your guide sharing his personal story of overcoming his extreme sorrows in his life was so touching
Yes it was an emotional day!
Omg you totally did justice to The Killing Fields. I've sat here in tears, especially the tree used to kill children. You both are amazing. Thank you.
Thank you...such a sad time
Crumbs !!! Thank you !!! What an episode.
That was a tough one to edit! Thanks for watching!
This was a very moving Vlog both. It was very eye opening and educational as I wouldn’t know half of the things you uncovered in here. Oh and congrats to Carole for getting more words right in this Vlog 👍🏻😜
Thanks! It was a tough one to edit. See I can get them right sometimes! 🤣
A very moving vlog thank you to you and thank you to the guides sharing thier sad stories x❤️
Thanks for watching 😊
Well, I'm so glad I've watched this early now and not before bed! 💔
Thank you for sharing x
It is a powerful episode, was a hard one to edit. Thanks for watching!
That was very powerful. Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching!
You struck a delightfully respectfully tone here. What wonderful people you both are
Thank you!
A very moving vlog. Without going into great detail my late father spent several years in the navy based in the far East during WWII. He witnessed horrific scenes. During one of the last conversations I had with him before he died aged 95, unusually he mentioned his time there. He told me the one thing we should all value in our life is freedom, he fought for his freedom and ours today. He considered that to be the most important achievement of his life despite rarely mentioning it. It sounds a cliche but there are so many in the world still suffering at the hands of others. Sharing historical events such as in your vlog are crucial, I salute you for making such a moving factual video. Thank you, Vik x x
As always Vik you’ve hit the nail on the head. We were worried how people would react to this episode so we are pleased the way it turned out. Thanks again for your comments.
It’s hard to comprehend the nightmares some people have been through.
It truly is.
Thank you for your professional and compassionate sharing of this tragic story from history, which I'm sure many like me, don't know much about. As I watched I was googling to learn more! And paused the video to read all the signs. I was choked up right along with you Carole. While this was a different kind of excursion, your guide was wonderful! ((HUGS))
Such a thought provoking excursion. So sad. Thank you for your lovely feedback, it was a hard one to edit!
Nice one Paul and Carol, thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
I found this so very moving - our guide was a child during that time and his sister shot dead for cheeking a guard
So harrowing what they went through! 😢
I have no words! Such an emotional experience for you to share. Hard to watch but thank you.
It was hard to edit but wanted to share 😊
Such an emotional and respectful journey you took us on. Thank you for sharing the reality of what that regime did to such a beautiful country. We will be visiting Auschwitz next month as part of our extension before our Emerald river cruise and I’m sure the impact on us will be similar.
You're welcome it was a tough episode to edit. Yes sure that will be an emotional experience too!
I very much appreciate the detailed content of the postings which you made regarding your recent trip to the Mekong. Each one of them provided a clearer indication of what a river cruiser could expect, since many cruise lines offer similar experiences. I noticed that you were both dressed comfortably and somewhat casually, which is to be expected for that hot, humid region. It's good to know that AmaWaterways permits that level of attire throughout the voyage. It would be helpful to know a) which items you actually packed? b) what additional items you wish you had packed? and c) what you didn't really need to pack for that specific portion of your multi-facted trip. Any information which you can share would be helpful.
Thanks, great to hear you have enjoyed them. Amawaterways was very casual we lived in sundresses, shorts and tee shirts for the day, comfortable shoes, we did take some smart casual attire - dresses and for Paul chinos and shirts for the evenings and dinner. Most important to pack are suncream, mosquito repellent and hats. It was very humid so no need for jackets etc. if you have any more questions do let us know.
@@PaulandCaroleLovetoTravel Trying to picture Paul in a sundress...
I am going in mid-September (rainy season? waterproof?) with Uniworld (do you now anything about them?), but now I don't have to. I'll just watch your postings again in the aircon and order Vietnamese takeaway.
You have travelled to a number of places. What did you do about power adapters for all the different countries, and mobile phone? I was thinking about using Whatsapp. Any thoughts?
Wow we do not know the lives of others hearing it is necessary but brutal what a triumph of the human spirit
Yes so glad their future is brighter!
Thank you.
😍
Very moving
Yes such a sad story!
There are no words. What a time to have lived through. Wonderful video. Glad your suitcase arrived.
Yes so sad. We were so happy to see our suitcase too!
Cambodia is on my list of places to visit
Wow how moving was this. Another informative video. Thank you
Thanks! We are so glad we learnt what actually happened, as sad as it was!
An incredible vlog. Such respect for you guys and all you do. ❤
Thanks so much!
Lovely video . Thank you for sharing
Thank you!
How heartbreaking, the tree with the children, I just don't have words 🥺 I'd heard of the killing fields but knew nothing about it. Just heartbreaking 💔
We were educated so much. So sad!
OMG. I really don't have words for that. It was so moving and the fact that they can talk about thier life and tragedies. Very "come to Jesus" testimonies. I wanted to hug them.
So moving 😢
I had a coworker that was from Cambodia, he told us a very similar story of his life at that time.
Such a sad history 😞
Hey Paul and Carole, flying into Gatwick from Canada on Saturday. Renting a car from Gatwick and travelling to Cornwall, what's the best routing, the M23, M25 and A303 or the M5. Thank you
Hi Mike hopefully you will have sat nav in the car if not the best thing to do is have Google Maps on your phone which will then show you the best and quickest route depending on what's going on with the roads on that day.
The Killing Fields are absolutely brutal, it must have been a very emotional excursion for you.
And the evening’s entertainment was such a huge contrast and the food at the Chef’s Table looked amazing
It was! Chefs table was superb and included in the cost of the cruise so that was a bonus!
tragic history
It is...
