So, for the Utah "Hockey Club" to consider that as a finalist for fans to pick is dangerously stupid, but nothing surprises me anymore.
The logo for [ Utah Hockey Club ] could be a legal document, say a nondescript sheet of paper with a lawyer's signature at the bottom. It could be yellowed with age to give it some character. The name must ALWAYS be in brackets...perhaps slightly tilted, with the font resembling that from a 1940's typewriter.
As far as other teams using the name Outlaws. There isn't a team in the NBA, MLB, NFL, MLS or any 'major' top tier professional sport that use the name Outlaws. Some names that DO have multiple teams attached to them: Panthers, Cardinals, Giants, Jets, Kings, Rangers... The argument that Outlaws is a bad choice because other teams use the name Outlaws (whatever league those teams are part of) doesn't hold water....at all.
Colorado also has an NLL team called the Mammoth, in the state pretty much next door. I think they might just stay with Hockey Club and the identity and the merchandise will use Yeti imagery from the logo to the mascot, then fans can call them the Yeti as the unofficial name.
@@ThunderDogY2K3 Well, again, there are names that multiple teams have as I listed above, but second...are we really going to take into account a Lacrosse team name, no matter where that team is? @@KWally the Trademark office also declined Utah Hockey Club, for many of the same reasons they denied Washington Football Team. I’m frankly surprised to see it in the list.
I’m really disappointed that it won’t the Utah Yetis. I’m hoping Mammoths will be the team’s official name because I’m not open to it being called HC or Outlaws. HC is just a lamé name that feels more like a soccer team. While Outlaws is definitely better than HC, but feel like that name would be better for another city like Houston. Plus Outlaws does not really represent a winter climate I was hoping for Utah’s NHL team.
Thank you for being a voice of reason here lol. I'm not a fan of the Outlaws name either. Yetis was my preferred name, in some ways, Mammoth is better then Yeti because Mammoths actually lived here and it has the same vibe. Outlaws is too generic and not Utah's brand.
My thoughts exactly, lol. It's basically picking between two Denver lacrosse team names-not that it would be much of an issue for those teams as two teams from different leagues can share a name (good examples being the two teams called the 'Cardinals', and the two teams called the 'Giants').
Quit harping on Yeti. Utah Hockey Club as a permanent name sucks. The answer is Mammoth(s). It’s Mammoth(s). There’s real relevance to the State with Mammoth(s), it fits the winter theme and colors, and outside of the Toronto Raptors in the NBA, there isn’t any other team that really uses an extinct animal as a mascot in the 4 major sports leagues, so it’s unique. You can say “Herd of Mammoths” or “Herd of Mammoth”. It works. It should be the name, and it has a lot of support here in Utah. (For the record, I’m not overly opposed to Outlaws, just REALLY like the Mammoth mascot. That’s all).
Yeti being out disappoints me. I am a wrestling fan and WCW had an infamous character about 30 years ago. An Egyptian mummy, trapped in a plastic 'block of ice', from the Himalayans, called The YETI. Announcer Tony Schiavone said it was "The Yet-tay." I don't know. It's wrestling.
This is getting better than the Coyotes debacle they get a so called building but can’t figure out or decide a decent name this is getting funnier by the day

Yeti got rejected so they changed the name to Wasatch and used the yeti branding. No one liked that idea so they added the next name from the semi finals on to the list which was outlaw. It only seems like a shit show to you because you are not smart enough to comprehend basic things.
I dont think it matters so much that the name be unique to the place but rather something cool and marketable. If you take a look at the Sharks for example, sharks are an animal found on both sides of the country (and around the world for that matter) or if you take a look at the LA Kings, Kings is not particularly unique either in sports (Sacramento Kings).
The Sharks got their name because the Bay Area is in the Red Triangle, a region where Great White Sharks come to feed and is notorious for Great White attacks. Also why the Sharks' logo is triangular.
I still like UHC. I think it works. It’s unique. It also allows locals to just colloquially call them the Yetis, and after some time of that, that will just become their name naturally.
I could get behind either Outlaws or Mammoth as the team name. What about Wasatch as the name of the mascot? Sasquatch in an outlaw hat? Or a mammoth named Wasatch? Too bad Yeti couldn't work as a name.
I could see that, I definitely think that a Sasquatch outlaw mascot would be fun, personally I think if outlaw wins we need to have the logo and mascot have a bandanna mask that is made to look like a goalie mask
Outlaws may appear generic, but there are several famous outlaws with ties to Utah, which I think makes it make a little bit more sense. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were both from Utah. There is also an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon Church) who was named an outlaw, who has almost a mythical reputation- Porter Rockwell. I don’t believe he has much of a reputation outside of Utah, but these historical figures may make the name resonate more with the local population.
They can still work out a deal with the Yeti corporation, just like Seattle did with Kraken Rum. I don't get why Yeti wouldn't do it, would be a win win for both. Maybe that's going on behind the scene.
Generic names like "Utah Hockey Club" can't be trademarked. So anyone would be legally allowed to create and sell team merch. I doubt the owners would like that!
🏒 Outlaws always #1 They play at the Saloon (the Delta Center). Utah has a rich Western film history as well had past outlaws. Old time piano player during intermissions. Fans in bandannas or cowboy hats? Most wanted instead of stars of the game
If they go with Mammoth and don't name the mascot "Woolly" or "Willie", what are we even doing here? Printing merch money. But if they go with any other name for the team, I think they should name the mascot "Yeti" ;)
I always felt Mammoth was the best name. There's strength to it and it provides more options for branding. Outlaws sounds like a generic high school team.
Utah Mammoth is by far the best. Utah Outlaws is so bad. Hockey is a winter sport in a state with the greatest snow on earth. Mammoth fits this perfectly. Nobody thinks of an Outlaw in snowy winter conditions. Just seems silly to even have that.
I like Outlaws, but i think theres one or two that never got looked at was Pioneers or Explorers either of those sounds good. Mammoth is good to but i think of the Colorado Mammoth of the NLL, Hockey Club could work but it would only be successful if the logo looks good. That's what this really comes down to what is marketably and does the logo look good on merchandise that people would buy, if they kept Hockey Club let the fans call them Yeti as unofficial nickname.
When Miami announced Heat would be their NBA team's name, a columnist wrote that in some neighborhoods, if you say "the Heat are coming," half the people run and the other half start swallowing things 😂
Brodie, great work! Although living in the middle of Canada, I watch all your content keep up the great work. Watching your video and looking at that jersey of the Outlaws , had me thinking the Utah Barons or the Banditos, Wasatch is certainly a bullet that’s been dodged 😂
Speaking of Mammoth, there's a Major League Lacrosse team in Colorado called the Colorado Mammoth that play their home games at Ball Arena. Even the XFL had a team called the Vegas Outlaws. There's plenty of examples of different leagues and teams having the same name. Even the NBA and NBA G League is another example: Golden State Warriors-Santa Cruz Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers-South Bay Lakers, even New York Giants of the NFL and San Francisco Giants of the MLB or the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL and Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA, the list goes on.
In the 90’s- The Central Wyoming Outlaws were a Tier II Junior A team back in the old American Frontier Hockey League which became the America West League. Before that league merged into the North American Hockey League.
Regarding the “Hockey Club” moniker, I was recently reminded that one of the original six teams is formally known as “le Club de hockey Canadien”, translated to Canadian Hockey Club. So if they go to the UHC route, they may end up being called the Salt Lake City Utahns, just as the team north of the border is colloquially known as the Montréal Canadiens.
Wasatch was added last minute to replce the yeti option, and used the yeti branding. In the survey you could choose keeping the name hockey club and using the yeti branding. But the yeti logo sucks. I will see the outlaw logo tonight, but I’m guessing mammoth will win.
@@IanEskelson we wont know until tonights game. However, the color scheme was the same for mammoth, uhc, and wasatch so probably will be the same for outlaw.
Beehive state Utah Swarm Great team color possibilities, interesting use of Bees and beehives in branding / mascots, and the word Swarm has lots of potential in marketing or in arena fan participation
Waylon Jennings just now said about the Utah Hockey Club that don’t you think this Outlaw bit just done got out of hand. What started out as a joke y’all don’t understand.
Another team having the same name shouldn’t be a problem. There are about 6 or 7 college teams named ‘Tigers’ and no one bats an eye. Clemson, Missouri, Auburn and Memphis just off the top of my head. And of course the Detroit Tigers baseball team. So ‘Utah Outlaws’ shouldn’t be a problem. Personally, I think ‘Tempest’ should be considered. Sounds cool to say. The Utah Tempest! ‘There’s a storm brewing!’ ‘The Tempest come storming back!’ I like it.
Yeti is just the Asian name for Sasquatch... why not try to find other areas of the world where there is a "yeti" but under a different name.. I am not sure if Sasquatch is trademarked or not
When I think of Outlaws hockey, I think of the New Jersey Outlaws were a Federal Hockey League team who played for 1 whole year in Wayne, NJ (about 25 miles west of NYC). They won the 2011-12 Championship (I went to a few games)... then moved to Williamsport and played outdoors for most of the year... and folded mid-season. Yea... I hope this isn't the fate of a potential Utah Outlaws hockey team.
4:56 I’m not from Utah and I don’t ski. When BB says “If you catch my drift” about “Wasatch,” I have NO clue. 😵💫 Is there some kind of frat boy double-entendre action going on?

I will think Yeti is dumb, sounds great but has absolutely nothing that makes me think of Utah. When the franchise relocated it would have just kept the coyote name imo, just as happened when the Jazz moved then you wouldn't have this problem. This is turning into a farce and it doesn't reflect well on the owners, in fact quite the opposite.
Bad example. "The Golden Knights" might be the worst expansion team name in the league. Lol
@@spooky.tattooerthat name was derided at first
The Wasatch name and its very "YETI" style logo were Ryan Smith's attempt to offload all the YETI merchandise they'd already secretly produced.
🤣🤣🤣
I like that idea name it unique like wasatch but make the visual a yeti
When voting you got to read a brief description of each name and Wasatch was playing on the idea that there is a mythical creature like the yeti that exists in the Wasatch mountain. As a native I wasn’t a fan because thats not a thing here, they just made it up to use the yeti branding.
@@ajscm6748 my idea was for the name Wasquath
@@ajscm6748I don’t understand why they didn’t just be called the Utah Abominables? The Abominables is a reference to the Yeti’s other name the Abominable Snowman.
Utah Hockey Club is so lame and uninspired, I really hope they don’t go with that. Also very frustrating a cooler company can block them from being called the Yeti. I feel like that has to do with preserving their SEO at least in part, not because there would be any confusion between brands or something similar. Yeti is still the best name but Mammoth is okay too, I suppose
Hockey Club has no imagination, inspiration, or originality. Mammoth looks best of the renderings
I'm just wondering what was wrong with "Utah Hive" and "Utah Swarm"
my 2c... all
Call them the Killer Bees .. their arena called the Hive .. Utah’s nickname is the Beehive state anyway
There already a baseball team called the Bees. Also that's a dumb name lol
@ Not as Dumb as Hockey Club
I've always thought the "Salt Lake Sasquatch" would be sick
Utah Yowie or Utah Yowl. Can still use a bigfoot as a mascot.
Even though I have no skin in the game and I personally think Yeti is a stupid name, I think the NHL needs to sue the cooler company. Copyright infringement goes both ways
I still dont get why they didnt use Sasquatch or Bigfoot; they’re all synonymous with a Yeti 🤦♂️
Was looking for this comment 😂
@@DELife6535 plus, Sasquatch/Bigfoot actually “live” on this continent.

Yes! Sasquatch or Bigfoot would fit perfectly and they could still use the Yeti imagery!
"Wasatch Sasquatch" woulda been REALLY original.
Actually, I want them to be called the "Salt Lake City SLCers [pronounced "slickers"]"
I like it, only problem is it isn't Salt Lake City only and you probably don't want to alienate all those fans not in SLC by changing the franchise isn't from Utah to SLC.
@@mattpotter8725 So call them the Utah SLCers... ;-)

It’s expensive junk.
This branding is turning into an absolute disaster. Not sure how theyd be able to trademark Hockey Club after the trademark office denied Washington the Football Team trademark...
Ditto
@@KWally the Trademark office also declined Utah Hockey Club, for many of the same reasons they denied Washington Football Team. I’m frankly surprised to see it in the list.
Oh, they did?
Did they explain because these "names" are too generic?
@tk80mufa5 that’s exactly what they said.
@@bobaagard ok, thx! 👍
Butch Cassidy and his gang literally called Utah home
@Tampafan33 I'm aware of this. Still not really our brand.
Outlaws used to hide out in the Utah Canyonlands and ambush lawmen there...better than Mammoth to be fair.
I still think they should've gone with Bighorns, Bisons, or Mountaineers.
Wow, all are very good choices!
Both Denver based pro lacrosse teams are called the Outlaws(outdoor, pll) and mammoth (indoor, nll) respectively.
My thoughts exactly, lol. It's basically picking between two Denver lacrosse team names-not that it would be much of an issue for those teams as two teams from different leagues can share a name (good examples being the two teams called the 'Cardinals', and the two teams called the 'Giants').
Nobody cares about Denver nor Lacrosse. They’re welcomed to change their name if they wish 🤷♂️
Pro lacrosse 😂😂😂😂 what will the fan say!?!???
@@adellelo956 Also NLL have the Warriors, Thunderbirds, Seals, Roughnecks... Though I guess it is funny that both Utah names are from a state over
@@CLew9 Utah is the better side of the Rockies so Utah teams take whatever names they want. CO teams can change their names. End of story.
Here in SLC Mammoth(s) is pretty popular, even when Yeti was at the top of the list.
Announcer Tony Schiavone said it was "The Yet-tay."
I don't know. It's wrestling.
Yeti company just being a bunch of jerks
Utah Mammoths this will my vote.
This is getting better than the Coyotes debacle they get a so called building but can’t figure out or decide a decent name this is getting funnier by the day
This whole franchise is cursed. The NHL should disband this franchise and expand to Houston.
@@b.a.sports4361 are you really that dense? How is this a debacle? Every team name goes through a trademark process it’s just not publicized.

@ Yea ! It’s a complete shit show ! Their Yeti name didn’t pan out… A big Thank you to yeti coolers and now it’s a panic to find a name so they are pulling names from a hat trying to find anything that’ll work. It’s poor planning simple as that
@@b.a.sports4361 you obviously have no idea what is going on, maybe you should do some reading. 3 of the 4 finalist names were on the list of the 6 semi final names.
Yeah, Eagles, Falcons, Hawks, Kings, Lions, Sharks, Tigers, etc. ought to be the most generic teamnames 😂
I've thought that too
I could get behind either Outlaws or Mammoth as the team name.
@@noahlewis6776 if they don’t change the logo, the current logo is not that. 😒
Beehive State, should be the bees
Outlaws may appear generic, but there are several famous outlaws with ties to Utah, which I think makes it make a little bit more sense. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were both from Utah. There is also an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon Church) who was named an outlaw, who has almost a mythical reputation- Porter Rockwell. I don’t believe he has much of a reputation outside of Utah, but these historical figures may make the name resonate more with the local population.
It should be Mammoth or Hockey Club. If it’s Hockey Club let’s use all the Yeti branding and logo just not the name.
That's the plan. The logo they are presenting with Hockey Club is the unused Yeti. Best looking logo by far
That being said Mammoth feels like the best choice overall
@@CIronbeard that logo is so bad I’m pretty sure an intern designed it.
It has an "Arena football" vibe.
"Outlaws" is a name that's so genericized that they'll be able to get it done.
The instinct argument doesn’t make sense. Toronto has the Raptor’s and they have been doing ok for 20 something years.
*extinct.
30 now
Outlaws is my vote! Mammoths is worst than Yetis. I liked Blizzard, Outlaws, and Taco Carts 😊
TACO CARTS IT IS OR TACO TRUCKS IN CALIFORNIA
They can still work out a deal with the Yeti corporation, just like Seattle did with Kraken Rum. I don't get why Yeti wouldn't do it, would be a win win for both. Maybe that's going on behind the scene.
According to the reports they tried to but Yeti is absolutely refusing everything
Generic names like "Utah Hockey Club" can't be trademarked. So anyone would be legally allowed to create and sell team merch. I doubt the owners would like that!
🏒 Outlaws always #1
They play at the Saloon (the Delta Center).
Utah has a rich Western film history as well had past outlaws.
Old time piano player during intermissions.
Fans in bandannas or cowboy hats?
Most wanted instead of stars of the game
Im no Utah native but I always liked the Utah Outlaws name, it rolls off the tongue nicely and its a very unique identity to pull off.
Sure does, just like Chicago Gangsters and New York Mafia....
its gonna be Mammoth. end of story. I do prefer Yeti but Mammoth is a good alternative
Hockey club is dumb and boring. The only one I think is decent is Mammoth. Too bad there wasn’t anything better.
Brodie, TIME TO MOVE ON.
Yeti is out.
If they go with Mammoth and don't name the mascot "Woolly" or "Willie", what are we even doing here? Printing merch money. But if they go with any other name for the team, I think they should name the mascot "Yeti" ;)
Outlaws, clearly, does not work in that market.
Yes I agree, it would work far better in a city like Houston, Phoenix, San Antonio, or Albuquerque. That’s why I’m hoping Mammoth wins.🦣❄️🏒
Brodie, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you say the patent and trademark office rejected the Utah Hockey Club trademark about a week ago?
I always felt Mammoth was the best name. There's strength to it and it provides more options for branding. Outlaws sounds like a generic high school team.
Outlaws has always been my favorite
The only good thing about Hockey Club as a name as it could allow them the chance to develop an actual nickname organically over time.
Utah Ice works just like Jazz plus it goes with Ice "Hockey" obviously
Still should’ve been Swarm
Utah Swarm was my pick, not gonna lie
Utah Mammoth is by far the best. Utah Outlaws is so bad. Hockey is a winter sport in a state with the greatest snow on earth. Mammoth fits this perfectly. Nobody thinks of an Outlaw in snowy winter conditions. Just seems silly to even have that.
I’m sticking with mammoths, it just seems more marketable
YETI
I like Outlaws, but i think theres one or two that never got looked at was Pioneers or Explorers either of those sounds good. Mammoth is good to but i think of the Colorado Mammoth of the NLL, Hockey Club could work but it would only be successful if the logo looks good. That's what this really comes down to what is marketably and does the logo look good on merchandise that people would buy, if they kept Hockey Club let the fans call them Yeti as unofficial nickname.
Hockey Club would be the MOST boring choice. It has to be Mammoth.
When Miami announced Heat would be their NBA team's name, a columnist wrote that in some neighborhoods, if you say "the Heat are coming," half the people run and the other half start swallowing things 😂
Wooly Mammoths 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 Wooly Mammoths 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 Wooly Mammoths 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
FIGHTING MASTODONS
"Mammoth and Outlaws are unoriginal and boring names"
Later: "Hockey Club is the best option"
So do people who already voted get a chance to reconsider?
good question
Voting starts tonight at the the next 3 games
Yes, the slate was wiped clean before the game last night vs Columbus.
Wasatch was added last minute to replce the yeti option, and used the yeti branding. In the survey you could choose keeping the name hockey club and using the yeti branding. But the yeti logo sucks. I will see the outlaw logo tonight, but I’m guessing mammoth will win.
Couple questions! You have to get tickets to vote, right? Also, did the color scheme change with the names when you saw them?
@@IanEskelson yes you need a ticket, the colors stay the same
@ClearVod Interesting. I don't think the light blue color scheme would fit Outlaws. Thanks for the reply!
@@IanEskelson we wont know until tonights game. However, the color scheme was the same for mammoth, uhc, and wasatch so probably will be the same for outlaw.

Beehive state
Utah Swarm
Great team color possibilities, interesting use of Bees and beehives in branding / mascots, and the word Swarm has lots of potential in marketing or in arena fan participation
The baseball team is the bees too though. Very unoriginal within its own area
Waylon Jennings just now said about the Utah Hockey Club that don’t you think this Outlaw bit just done got out of hand. What started out as a joke y’all don’t understand.
Not from/in Utah, but I really favor mammoth. I just like teams that use prehistoric mammal/ lizard names, (raptors, predators etc)
LETS GO OUTLAWS! Every other season ticket holder I know will be casting their votes for Outlaws HARD next couple of games 🎉🎉
Y'all getting hoodwinked by Ryan Smith. Promised a new arena, now he just wants to renovate. Classic bait and switch. This franchise is cursed.
i vote for the Outlaws
That outlaw looks like he wants to steal our hamburgers
Always thought Utah Raptors would’ve been the best, especially considering the Utahraptors was an actual thing. Mammoth it will have to be.
I'm not sure which I'll be voting for tonight. Mammoth or Outlaws.
@@jimlittle5769 what did you decide?
Yeti is just the Asian name for Sasquatch... why not try to find other areas of the world where there is a "yeti" but under a different name.. I am not sure if Sasquatch is trademarked or not
Not exactly, Sasquatch would be the temperate climate equivalent, yeti is more akin to the show monster version
Outlaws is my favourite but Mammoth works as well.
