Washington Coliseum has wonderful memories for me.❤ Grew up in a house right on K Street N.E near 3rd Street. My departed mother used to walk with my older sister and I to see the Ice Capades.❤1970s. Just mesmerized by the beautiful skating there and love watching it to this day. Mother always got us front--row seats. Fell in love with ice skating because of that. Aunt took me to see Roller Derby there too. Thank you for posting and sharing this with us all. Very informative and I appreciate it.🙂

The Beatles playing there was a major first. Wish I could have been there. I was in Madrid Spain then.. Thankfully the concert was filmed. Very interesting documentary

This is truly a memorable DC landmark. As a teen, I've attended several go-go and entertainment events here. So very cool to know that the Beatles played here as well.

The fact that it was the location of the Beatles First full concert in America is enough to maintain this space even if not for entertaining per say, but as a landmark and space that is repurposed and utilized.

My mother would take us there during the 70s to see the Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus, then I started going on my own to Go-Go concerts in the mid 80s

Originally seating about 9000, the arena is one of two buildings remaining in the US that utilize the cast concrete roof construction.
The other building is Atlantic City Convention Hall or Boardwalk Hall as it is known these days.
The roof construction was developed in Germany for aircraft hangars. It was also used at hangars in US airports in the late 1930s which is where Uline probably encountered the design.
At $700K to build in 1941, Uline was relatively cheaply built even for the time.
Even then, it suffered from less than optimal Bus and Trolley service and had limited parking options.
Members of the last iteration of the ABA Capitals team called it the worst arena in the country at the time(c.late 1960s) as far as amenities.
Because it's secondary purpose was also to warehouse ice if needed, it's side walls are in excess of a foot thick and at the time of its renovation after the 50th anniversary Beatles event in 2014, the building was still essentially sound save for a very rough demolition of most of the seating area to accommodate vehicle parking and previously, trash storage.
Its floors were found to be of an inconsistent thickness, though,as little as two or so inches in some spots, causing the renovations to include thickening those areas.
An REI store roughly occupies the floor space that includes the actual spot which is marked where the plywood covered boxing ring on top of which the Beatles performed would have stood in 1964.
While The Beatles remain the most remembered act to play the Coliseum, others included Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones along with major R&B acts of the era.
Profits realized by Coliseum owner Harry Lynn from the Beatles show bought a new Lincoln Continental for his wife.
Because of its location, the Coliseum could not be expanded nor offer adequate parking, ultimately causing it to be overlooked for many promotions in the later Sixties with the 1968 riots as mentioned in the film being a factor in its decline.
However, the Coliseum stands along with its other accomplishments as the venue that actually served as the starting point for the concert industry as we know it today.
Few people in the DC area know that the original site chosen for the Beatles performance was a firehouse hall in nearby Bladensburg, MD.
Unbelievably, in a region that lacked adequate venues back then, many early rock shows were held in halls that held as little as 200 people.
The original show contract was drawn up AND AGREED TO BY NEMS Enterprises who managed the group the early fall of 1963 well before the full effect of "Beatlemania" would dictate a much larger space.
Some have joked that had the show taken place in its original choice of venue, the band would have still been playing it today to accomodate the ticket requests.
It was only after the intervention of Irving Feld, owner of the Ringling Brothers Circus and promoter of " The Biggest Show Of Stars" series in the late 1950s, that the Coliseum was wisely chosen with the original promoter (a local dj)invited to uninvolve himself with the proceedings.
Top ticket prices for the Beatles appearance were $5.50 and most tickets were sold at Feld's "Super Music City" record store in nearby Silver Spring MD.
The Beatles performance clips as shown in the film are from video footage shot by Sullivan Productions for exhibition in theaters during a two day run in March 1964.
To this day, no subsequent legitimate release of the first ever US Beatles concert has ever been licensed beyond short clips.
DC'S old ice house, forever connected to history, almost lost forever, now reimagined as a multi purpose space to serve a new generation of residents.
