- I put this video together with pictures and videos I took over the past 14 months or so (well... mainly the past few months). There is still a lot of fine-tuning to do on the sub, but I would say she is 99% "seaworthy" and will be ready for her first voyage in no time.

the third sea trial was in the 'yellow river' and the company who made the kits 'went under' after a while but rebounded back up again ...cool stuff ...it'd be awesome to see for real ..

What an amazing machine you turned out. Incredible detail.It blows my mind how someone can put one of these subs together and function properly... The Russians will be proud.... Fantastic job!

Nice job on the build. The "Kit" if we wish to call it that, has been refined considerably since it first was introduced by Engel. Mine I built in 1999-2001. Fair warning t anyone interested in building this model. This is involved. Not some "quickie" kit like a Revell, etc.Lot's of time needed to make her perfect.
I completely agree with you. This was my first build. I never built a RC sub before, but I really liked the Typhoon even knowing that it was probably the most difficult one to build from Engel. The whole thing took me about a year from start to finish. This master scale is truly great and vey detail.
I like how you're playing the theme song from crimson Tide when you should be playing the one from Hunt for Red October

It is actually a kit you can get from a company out of Germany. (engel-modellbau.eu/shop/en/home/) I believe they also sell just the hull and the fittings. Good luck!

I also built a model Sub, but mine turned out to be a Voyage to the bottom of the see ya.

So this may be a dumb question. But if the water was clear, could this in theory dive 20 or 30 feet? Or does the radio waves not penetrate that deep? If not, what is the safe dive depth for something like this?
Hi Greg, no question is dumb : )
Water doesn’t treat RC radio signal kindly. Signal would attenuate extremely quick in water. The sub also has a pressure sensor. If she dives more than 6 ft or so, she would empty the ballistic tanks to surface.

Seems quite realistic except for the noise. It should be much more noisy. You could hear an Akula from 20 miles away with passive sonar.

Is this a kit that we could buy and if it is where can I get it and how much if you don't mind saying or is this something ya put together by yourself? This is by far the best rc sub I've seen. This is a kit out of Germany. The name of the company is called Engel. They provide you almost everything, which is awesome for someone who tried to build a sub for the first time : ) You just have to put them together, which could take a lot of time... They also list all the prices on their website.

How far can it go?
Technically 18 ft underwater, but it was never tested and the signal probably can’t reach that deep anyways : ) I only went down about 3-4 ft and it was awesome!
Noisy like all Russian subs we could hear them from miles away. During your pond trials you had to stretch out over a few days because you were afraid you might never see it again, right. We used to follow them and do underwater hull surveys.

I am positive that you can just buy the hull. Shoot them an email. They are quite good at replying in a timely manner.
An incredible piece of work ! Fine engineering. It would be great to know the details of how you get her to submerge and surface. Now you need to install little ICBM's and torpedo tubes. Thanks for sharing. It is a real treat. BTW. Your Roll Tide link is dead. Nice music choice though, especially considering what happened to that real crew of the infamous Typhoon. Poor bastards. Anyone who admires Putin's methods should revisit that tale.

At the opening you refer to this RC submarine as an, "Akula", class Russian Sub. If I am not mistaken the Akula, or Shark, class Sub was actually an attack Sub not a missile boat.
You are right ; ) I think it is just called the Typhoon class.
Honestly the Hunt for Red october would have been more fitting music, seeing as Red october was a Typhoon. still great video, though....is the camera weighing it down a bit? because the real sub sits alot higher above the waterline when surfaced...
It wasn’t the camera. At that time, I was playing around with the ballast.

The waterline is correct. When in port, the sub is higher for maintenance.

Never seen a Typhoon with a smooth forward deck like that. Guess this new model fires ICBM's horizontally. otherwise pretty neat model.
