  • Our next stop on this epic road trip takes us to Ha Ha Tonka State Park in Missouri, a place rich in history and natural beauty. Located along the stunning Lake of the Ozarks, this park is a must-see destination for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The Lake of the Ozarks, one of the largest man-made lakes in the U.S., spans more than 54,000 acres with over 1,100 miles of shoreline. It's a popular spot for boating, fishing, and enjoying the incredible views that Missouri has to offer.
We started our hike right along the lake, winding through trails that showcase the unique beauty of this region. Our first stop was Ha Ha Tonka Spring, one of Missouri’s largest natural springs, pumping out an impressive 48 million gallons of water per day! The park’s landscape is renowned for its karst formations-a fascinating mix of caves, sinkholes, and natural bridges that highlight the geological wonder of Missouri, also known as the Cave State.
The trail led us up hundreds of steps, ascending through the park’s rugged terrain to reach our final destination: the incredible castle ruins and water tower. The castle has a dramatic history. It was originally built in the early 1900s by Robert Snyder, a wealthy Kansas City businessman. Tragically, Snyder was killed in a car accident before the castle was completed, and his family took over the project. In the 1940s, the castle was devastated by a fire, leaving behind the striking stone ruins that still stand today as a monument to its fascinating past.
This park combines breathtaking natural landscapes with a captivating glimpse into history, making it one of the most unique destinations in the Midwest.

I have fond memories of this area of Missouri from one of my early trips across country back in the late 70's. I haven't been back since, but thanks for reminding me of those happy times. 🙂

Missouri is one of those states that you never hear someone say they are going to hike in or explore lol, but after traveling through there I was blown away by all the great looking lakes and parks. Maybe one day ill make it back to that part of the country.

The color of the water at the spring was so pretty. Very nice overlook and cool to see the shell of the stonework still standing.

I’m sorry I will never see these places as a castle. They are just really big American homes. There aren’t any real castles in America. One they are illegal to build. When someone say castle to me I vision the mid evil castles with the stone towers and keeps motes no windows only murder whole etc. we do have places of defense in America yet, they are called STAR FORTS not castles. I guess if you got enough money to build big you can call it what you wish. Doesn’t mean I have to see it as one though! Thanks for the video. It is very beautiful to see historic places. I travel a lot so I try and stop and see places like this. So thanks for giving me another stop.

I've watched many vids of van lifers on the road and none that I've watched have mentioned this park or the Turkey Run park.
Maybe because van lifers tend to need to budget their expenses and avoid State Parks which often have a fee. I don't know about MO or IN. Ohio and PA are free. NY has entrance fee.
Id like to visit this one someday.
    Thanks for highlighting it.

Thanks for the comment! My goal was to head to some "off the beaten path" areas along this trip that not a lot of folks have heard of, or at least back here in PA. Ha Ha Tonka was free to get in and I believe Turkey Run was maybe 8 dollars? Thanks again!
