- In this video I share a look at my lumber storage and give a tour of my workshop. My lumber is stored in my 120sqft shed and in my house's basement. My shop is in a tuck under garage. It is 20'x21' and has 7' ceilings.

Its crazy how you picture what you think someones layout looks like and then be totally wrong when it's all laid out on camera for you. You do really good work Matt. Can't imagine what another 10 or 15 years will bring you.
My pocket hole jig is about as large as your dovetail jig lol
really impressed that you didn't drool all over his wood, Jay Bates ... We all feel sorry for the hardwood drought you live in!
Matt, my friend...you have a serious wood addiction problem. We should all be so lucky! Thanks for the shop tour! Really awesome!
Jay Bates Thank you Jay! I think it's even more different when you see it in person. I had watched Dema's shop tour and when I stopped by his shop for the first time I still felt out of place. lol that is a big pocket hole jig :)
Chris Williams Thank you Chris!
wordsnwood
Jim Challender It's a r4511. I bought it in 2008
Hi could tell me more about the Lenox bandsaw blade you use the hook/Tpi /ect thanks Howie
1/2" 3tpi
Your wife is a saint for letting you have all that wood in and around the house
I do love her quite a bit
Matthew Cremona I brought a few sheets of plywood in the kitchen to store whilst my storage shed was being improved (insulating and lining the walls etc). The plywood was out of the way propped up against the wall but still it was only 1 week before my wife insisted that I move it. So now I am having to finish working on my 10x8 shed with all that plywood getting in my way! You are definitely lucky to have a tolerant wife.
Matthew Cremona Great tour and shop you have there Matt. I REALLY like your positive attitude, and your laughter is contagious. Keep up the good work
Bellevue Woodshop Thank you!!
I love this! Have you considered doing an updated video? Im sure you've made some changes in the last 5 years.
Wow, so much lumber! cool!
:) Thanks!
Great tour, Matt!
I have to ask.... Is that a wooden bicycle seat on top of your dovetail jig? Couldn't think what else it would be.
It sure is a lot of wood, and thick! It's easy to get 4/4 stuff, but rare to see 12 and 16/4!!
Your shed looks bigger on the inside.
Oh yeah, and that's not that large a DC, but some really long runs of pipe. And it works well?
thanks again.
wordsnwood Thanks Art! yes! it is! good eye :) The shed is about 120sqft. With the dormers it looks really big on the inside. There is a lot of height. The DC works well when the filter is clean. Once it starts getting clogged the performance degrades rapidly but that's the disadvantage to all single stage units
Thanks for the tour Matt. I'd kill for that jointer, kind of glad I can't afford it as I have no room for one anyway. I dream of a big open shop like Frank Howarth's, how cool would it be to have space to actually do something without having to move everything else to get at anything and then that is in the way for the next step.
I like Frank's shop as well. I like the way it is laid out and I like the design of the structure as well! Thanks John!
Am insanely jealous of your wood stash....and the Jointer!
***** Thanks Tyler! :)
Stash is ok, the jointer is amazing though
Jealous, I agree completely.
*****
You do like and you're one of the few who have seen it in person
lol. VIP tour for sure
I really enjoyed the shop series, it was fun to see the whole history of how it evolved. Wish I would have taken video or even pictures as I was setting mine up.
Thanks Andy! I wish I had taken more pictures but I'm glad I had some to share. I wish I would have taken some pictures of my first shop.
Thank you for your response. How did you obtain all the machinery and tools, money wise, if you don't mind me asking... I mean everything, how did you get it? :)
I bought it all over a few years; some new, some used
at 2:40 that is a nice slab of wood - it will make someone a nice table;) I'm glad to hear the only ikea stuff in your shop is lighting, lol
Nick Ferry Yeah, it was nice. It found a home last weekend :) I also have an ikea tape measure lol
Matthew Cremona Ikea tape measure? Now I have heard it all.
Everyone needs a beam saw...
You just whiped that thing out like it was no big deal, lol
Great tour, thank for sharing!
Shop built lol That isn't a common shop tool? :) Thanks!
Wonderful shop tour! I appreciate your level of detail. I am incredibly jealous of your lumber capabilities. The fact that you harvest it all yourself makes me green with envy. That kind of stuff is unheard of (and in many cases impossible) here in California. I can't wait to move back to the northwest!
I wish that I could purchase some of your lumber. I lead a group of Viking era reenactors and we're always looking pining for white oak and ash. Have you ever attempted quartersawing lumber? Perhaps going old school and doing some hand hewing?
Thanks again for the tour. I'm really looking forward to your next projects!
Michael Howell Thank you Michael! I haven't tried straight quarter sawing. I tend to just plain saw everything and that way you get some of each kind of cut. Hand hewing would be fun and is something I'd like to try some day. Thanks again!
Hoarder
Max Mustermann Just a little lol
Great shop tour Matt! I see no scrap problems, just opportunities :) Your planer is sweet! Its always interesting to see how other people have their setups.
AdventuresInDIY Thanks Chris! I like that way of thinking :)
Just watched a few of your shop related videos, you've got a nice set up. Enjoyed the videos.
The Homestead Craftsman Thank you! I really enjoy your videos!
I take it this was not recorded today! It's beautiful day in MN
Grant Kopka haha! no I think I did this last Wednesday the 14th
And over here in the dog house I keep some more bowl blanks, and behind the dog house I keep the backup chain saw for when a neighbor wants to borrow one and I don't want to let them have any of the five good ones. Oh and up this tree that's where I keep all the pine lumber because what else would you put up there?
And over here under the pile of sawdust is my collection of spalted lumber :)
very nice!
***** Thank you!
How many 240 volt outlets did you put in? Did you use 240 duplex outlets anywhere?
I thoroughly enjoyed your tour. Thank you! 👍👌
***** Thank you!
Have you ever considered renting out your shop (specifically the jointer) to other locals who don't have that kind of equipment yet? I'm also in MN (we met a Rockler once - go figure...) and have thought of setting up a Facebook page for MN woodworkers to create pointers as well as a classifieds for tool/shop sharing.
awesome set up 3 great videos , looking forward to better dust collection in my own shop
jeez and i thought my workshop is cramped :) That is one helluva workshop mate. Question - how do you joint/plane longer pieces, like 2-3m ones?
You are gonna be on hoarders...definitely jealous of your stockpile...Keep up the great work Matt...
Jim Rupert Now that would make a great episode! Thanks Jim!
Where did you get the mobile base that fits your jointer? I don't see any Shop Fox bases that would fit the 40ish inch width of a 12" jointer.
Have you thought about selling the scraps by the pound as "shorts"? A neighbor of mine sells lumber he cuts on a trailer bandsaw mill as a second source of income. He sells, actually his son does as his "allowance", shorts in 5 gallon joint compund buckets he gets from dumpsters at construction sites measured with a hanging scale. it seems like everyone who buys lumber walks away wit a bucket of "shorts".
Thank's for the tour Matt! Gave me a lot of ideas for my shop organisation.
I'm turning into a "Grizzly" snob.. they make nice stuff..
***** I love their stuff. I can't wait to add more.
***** I'd say so. Whenever I sell mine I'll probably only get $800 for it. So for a few hundred more you can get a spiral head, go for it. Maybe talk them down to $1100? ;)
Matt, I need to purchase insert throat for delta table saw 725. Need this asap. Can you help?
Seems odd to have a natural gas heater in a wood shop, especially a shop with a dust collector?Might want to ask your insurance company how they feel about that.
On the whole, do you sell more Banner stock or the larger slabs. I wasn't aware you had all of this smaller thinner stock in your shed, cuz I've always wondered what was in it
You're first bench, was exactly like mine, and I did the same thing, I just put crap on top of crap. That's why I installed my cabinets to eliminate that, and it did. You'll like the base cabinets and drawers. Awesome shop, you need more room like all of us!
Lance's Woodshop & Adventures I can't wait to get started on them. They're really going to clean things up. I hate having stuff out everywhere. Thanks Lance!
It's tough to decide whether I like your shop better or the wood shed! Great shop tour Matt, very thorough on showing all the bits and pieces and how it's set up. I love the jigsaw breakdown station too, very easy to cut and move on.
I think they're both equally full of stuff. Thanks Zac! I'm going to start calling it "The Breakdown Station" Cutting lumber while dancing. Should be fun!
sell your cutting board waste for pen blanks
What model Ridgid saw do you have? I bought a R4512 two months ago.

great walkthrough. you have a great place there and you seem to apreciate it, so it's nice to watch.
Thanks!
Awesome tour, I think the best on RUclips. Sorry you don't have enough lumber to keep you busy for the next decade or two.
Thanks Michael! I think I'll be set on lumber for a little bit :)
Thanks Matt i enjoyed that i need to rethink my shop layout. Look like a beautiful area you live in we dont get to see snow where i am in Australia :)
OneWood - Warren Downes Thank you! I like the snow but I don't care so much for the cold. lol
It must be nice to be in a place that has all those trees available. We don't have it here in California, but then again, we don't have the snow either.
It's certainly a trade off but usually the snow isn't too bad
Thanks. Very nice tour. I love a shop that looks like mine ....................................... and that of most other folks.
What kind of piping did you use for the dust collection runs?
What the heck is all that white crunchy stuff on the ground??
JimE
Thanks JimE! I'm using 26 gauge metal ducting. It went up fairly easily. That white stuff is melting quite a bit today :)
Your shed upgraded a little since them.
I was always told not to store a hand planer face down? Always on the side.
Mmmm the top shelf wood,,,
***** :) The good stuff
Dude holy wood supply!! Haha! How much for the walnut? &u got an awsome shop! How many hp is ur d.c? Inha e the 2hp hrbr fght one and cant seem to get enough suction when I have it hooked up to more than one machine. I know its capable of it cuz ive seen it in almost 100 dffrent shops set up to a few machines (like ur shop) I have the accessories for it ie:other 4"hoses blast gates T&Y branches. Any thoughts I wht the heck im doing wrong? &I even went as far as using duct tape to make sure all the hoses were air tight. I spent 2 days setting it all up to find out it didnt work at all and I only had it hooked up to my planer t.saw and miter saw. Which are all with in a 10-12' radius. I used pvc.
Joe Walters It's pretty much the same size. It's rated at 1.75hp. Do you just have the top bag for yours or did you upgrade to a canister filter? It should have no problem pulling stuff through 10' of 4" ducting...
No upgrades. Just the cloth bag it came with. And yea thts what I thought but man ill telya it loses soooo much suction power when hooked up to 2 machines. And I tried wooden and the plastic blast gates
Matthew Cremona thts what I thought. .
Matthew Cremona does the canister filter make a difference in suction power?
Joe Walters
Maybe, Maybe not. I guess it depends on how clogged up the filter is.
Great space, you are going to have to get busy to get all the wood piles pared down in size!
Trying to stay busy!
Enjoyed your shop video, I too have a problem with space in my shop.........spend too much time moving and setting up equipment. Hopefully in the future I can expand my working space........I also use my basement to dry wood before processing..........I live in Maine, I didn't catch where you are located......
Gene G Thank you Gene! I am in Minnesota.
How do you vent the gas exhaust on that garage heater?
You sell slabs? Are you in new england
Did you go over your electricity outlet set up?
Matt! What kind of Lapel mic do you use? Also, if I ever visit your shop PLEASE tell me to bring a helmet because standing at 6'5" I fell like I'd be hitting my head a lot (story of my life ). Loved the shop series by the way!
It's an audio technica: amzn.to/1CPP6yl You wouldn't be able to jump in my shop either, 7' ceilings :) Thanks!
Great tour Matt! I love that stockpile of lumber in your outside shed. One of the largest obstacles I have here in Florida is locating hardwood lumber (maple-cherry-walnut) for my projects. I wish I lived closer to you - - would definitely relieve you of some of that beautiful cured hardwood!!! Got some good ideas from this vid - - THANKS! You narrate/explain everything so well!
***** Thank you!!! Well if you're ever in the area :)
Holy Splinter Soars Batman! POW! Bam! Kazowee! Glad I don't live closer or I would be bankrupt buying some of your wood! Even though you have some scraps laying around (who doesn't), it seems we are not only the same height but organize our work space very similar. Well, somewhat since I don't have even a quarter of what you do in tools and machines. I must admit, that was the best shop tour I have seen (and I've seen hundreds). The walk through and explanation of the four sections along with the accessories and expendables being near the tools that use them was so cohesive. Anyway, thank you very much for the "Full tour" covering inside, outside and below! Yes I am envious, who wouldn't be?
MRrwmac Thanks Mac! If you ever make the trip, you won't go home empty handed :)
Hmmmmm. Are YOU a wood hoarder? haha! At the rate gas is going down I might be able to make a road trip....Just kidding. It would be a long trip from Rhode Island. Nice tour Matt..
Dave Pelcher Just a little bit lol If you're ever out here, you're more than welcome to stop by. Thanks Dave!
Hey Matt. Cool video. It's never been real clear as to what you actually do for a living. Are you a woodworker by trade, or is this a very passionate hobby? You seem to be doing very well, whatever your career!
Thanks Chris! It's a passionate hobby right now :)
matthew, does the 15" planer meet your needs? would you entertain the grizzly 20" I have the Dewalt 735 now, I believe the 15 " would suite my needs but I only want to buy one more planer in my life.....
I actually bought the 15" as a stepping stone to the 20". I'm a fairly heavy user and I like to work with wide boards so a 20" would fit my workflow better. That's also why I just got the straight knife cutterhead instead of spiral because I know that someday I'll end up with a 20" with spiral head.
Hey Matt,
I’m new to the TWW Guild and your site. My attention got grabbed by your Rikon band saw, I’m considering the 10-324. I’m also considering the Rikon 25-130H benchtop planer, I don’t have space for a floorstanding unit. What do you think about Rikon in general? Do you have any thoughts about how that Rikon planer might compare to the DeWalt DW735? The Rikon does have a helical cutter.
thanks, Alan
Hi Matt! Thanks for all your content and congrats on 100K subscribers! You didn't really seem to cover your table saw at all, only the blades and sleds. I'm wondering if you feel like a contractor style table saw limits you and you wish you had a cabinet style table saw. I have been eyeing a Sawstop 3HP PCS for a while now, but having a hard time justifying the cost... even though it would be the only table saw I feel like I would need for the rest of my life. Thoughts?
Thank you! I have the 3HP PCS now. User experience is much better on a cabinet saw but as far as functionality goes, they both cut wood
You MAY have a wood hoarding problem... just sayin. =)
It's a maybe :)
Nice shop Matthew! I should do one at some point, might need to do a bit of tidying up first. Very jealous of your set up.
I'm interested in how you custom mill up your lumber for sale. Would it be possible to do a video showing the process of felling the tree, slabbing, drying, then milling into useful boards and timber? I'd love to see your process.
Thanks for sharing. Like most people here I check every day to see if you've posted a new video.
I think I spent most of the day cleaning up my shop for this tour. It had never been cleaner! (and it didn't last long). What I'm hoping to do with the video showing the making of the secretary doors is show the whole process since I have footage of the tree all the way through construction of the doors. That should be a fun video. Thanks Andrew!
Matthew Cremona Great stuff. I look forward to it. Thanks again
You have a great set up and it doesn't like you will have a shortage of wood for a while :-) My biggest problem in my shop is the cut offs. I really hate to get rid of them because I always end up needed something. And since most are exotic woods I like to get my moneys worth out of them :-) That doesn't seem to be a problem since I just picked up a second mini lathe and am doing a lot of small turnings. Thanks for the tour. I look forward to your videos.
Jim Coogan I'm running out of places to put it! Small turnings are a great way to get rid of some scraps. I'd be overrun if I didn't make cutting boards. Thanks as always, Jim!
Did you mill all that lumber with just your chainsaw mill?
Jeremy Thompson Just the stuff on the right of the shed and the slabs stacked out behind it.
Matt,
Do you ever worry about bugs with all the wood in your house? I suppose if its all been through a solar kiln that's probably killed everything, but anything that is still drying could potentially have a wide variety of home-destroying critters in it. Just curious to know if you worry about that and what you do to mitigate the issue.
Thanks!
Adam
Adam Baird Hey Adam, I'm not too concerned about it. I don't typically bring in lumber that is live edge, where typically bugs would be hiding. As I am unloading the lumber, I visually inspect each board for signs of insects. I don't bring in anything that has signs of active/recent insect activity. Thanks!
Thankyou very much for letting us in to your wood world.... I am going to build my shop out of a 30' x40' addition to my garage and I have similar size tools that you have but are spread out into to room one 19 steps above the other one... How big is your shop???
Thanks for checking the video out. My shop is a bit more than 400sqft. Roughly 20x21 ish
Wow Mat, you have a great shop and such great tools! I'm not envious at all. Cripes, so much wood! Congratulations on having such a great wife to let you have alllll those toys. good job.
stephen dickinson Thank you Stephen! I have an amazing wife :)
Thanks, Matt, for another great video. While I'm very interested in everything you showed, I also wish you could do a video about the equipment and process (workflow) you use for making your RUclips videos.
I've seen your Canon dSLR for some B Roll stuff, but I'm intrigued with what else you use. What wireless mic system do you use?...and where do you run the audio input? (Camcorder, Canon, etc,) What software do you use for cutting your videos (I have used both iMovie and Final Cut Pro)? Major kudos and high fives for your mastery of creating compelling YT videos that tell your story so well. Keep it up, sir!
-Dr. Larry S. Anderson, Tupelo, MS (birthplace of Elvis!)
Matt ... my shop looks more like yours than it does Toolify's shop! Just watched his shop tour where you made a guest appearance. I wished mine looked more like his in the organized department! 🙄. Nice tour!
I like the carbide bandsaw blades also. I have a Timberwolf 1" carbide blade and it is excellent for resawing.
Mat Very nice shop If you ever build that freestanding shop pour hydroponic heat tubes into the slab Use a water hearer as a boiler and set a thermostat to 50 deg With that white stuff on the ground you would not believe the difference having a partially warm floor makes. A lot of farmers in the Midwest use it as a way to help heat their shops. Also build with 6" walls the extra insulation and strength make a big difference.
Peter Menningen That would definitely be something I would do if I ever built a shop. It would also be a lot bigger than this one is. Thanks Peter!
Probably a good idea to have safety glasses at each entrance for visitors :p Do you like the air cleaner (efficient)? I've always wanted one. But I'm so use to walking around with a respirator the whole time that I have been able to manage without one. Carbide tipped band saw blade? Another example that I've been out of it for a long time. I've found a miter saw mobile space saving and very easy to setup right by the garage door (inside or out) whenever I need it. Would be nice to have a Kapex with those sweet extension wings.
diycentral safety glasses and a hard hat :) I like it. I can visibly see the dust getting pulled out of the air. It also helps to circulate the air from the heater. If you're wearing a mask all the time already, that's better anyways. I wonder what else you've missed. One of those Kapex setups would be super nice!
Matt, Where in MN are you located? I may be interested in buying some lumber from you. I am in the mpls/stp area.
I'm in Brooklyn Center. Shoot me an email: matt@mattcremona.com
Awesome tour Matt, hell of a lumber collection you got!
Lane Bros WoodShop Thanks, glad you liked it! :)
You have a video on air cleaners?
Your wife must be a saint. She parks outside in the snow and uses the treadmill next to 2,000 board feet of lumber just to feed your sickness, called woodworking.
Paul Snowden She's incredible. Absolutely incredible.
Great shop you have there Matt. I do have a few questions about how you price and sell your lumber. I assume you sell it by the board foot, more in how you decide on a price rough and planned. And where you sell it at. And I would guess that you sell both dry and green boards. How do you price them also? Thanks again
Brian Bennington Thank you Brian! I keep the pricing simple. Most everything is the same board foot price. I currently just sell through a listing on craigslist. I don't sell green lumber. People seem to be a little too impatient for that most times. They don't want to wait for the material to dry. For surfacing, I just change an hourly shop rate.
Too messy for me!
Yeah I need to get some more organization going :)
YEAH Grizzly! Got the same sander too. Very nice!
:) Good stuff!
Complimenti per le tue idee ed i tuoi lavori veramente bravo-ma la domanda è COME FATE CON TUTTA QUELLA NEVE E QUEL FREDDO?
haha! I live with it. It will be gone eventually :)
OMW There is a lot of wood! the only thing that grows in South Africa is pine! You are so fortunate!!
:) Thanks!
I really enjoyed this tour of your shop Matt thanks for doing it. lots of ideas for when I have a bigger shop. jumbo radial saw at 16:50 cracked me up. also, I dont think you have enough wood eh
Thank you Jorge! That saw is a lot of fun! And there is more wood out at the farm where we log :)
If you start thinking about putting lumber under the baby crib you should probably get help.: )
David ODell Well if I don't do that, it's just wasted space :)
Nice shop. Looks like you need to get started on building some baby furniture now. Can't wait to see that :)
***** Thank you! I'll be starting on that soon :)
What size air compressor?
Very Nice! I think you may want to build a bigger storage shed in the back, lol.
Love your videos Matt. Keep them up. Beautiful work too. -- Chuck from LA
Hey Matt,
With the heater in your shop - do you find that when the area cools down once heated you get condensation on all the cast iron surfaces? I thought Gas created moisture when used for heating. I ask because my shop is freezing and I'm trying to figure out what kind of heating to put in - I had thought I'd go for gas but the condensation thing put me off!
I don't have any condensation issues. Gas exhaust has moisture in it but my unit is vented to outside so that is not an issue. I like my heater a lot. It works great!
What do you do with all of your bowls? craft fairs, craigs list, etsy etc. I love turning bowls, but i have too many in my house and all of my family and friends have a few too!
lol I leave them rough turned. Whenever we need to bring a gift somewhere I either grab a cutting board or I grab a rough turned bowl and finish it. We're running out of friends and family to give them to
Enjoyed this video. What's that white stuff all over the ground?
El Rayo X Thanks! I have no idea... Some sort of toxic waste...
I love the tool and your work Matt.... but I’d be frustrated by the clutter to be honest! Keep building! You’re awesome
Fast 30 minutes. You have a great shop.
Ted Alexander Thanks Ted! I was hoping it wouldn't feel too long.
Matthew Cremona
it didn't feel like 30 min.
Very nice Matt, I feel like I know you even better. Tell me you don't use that treadmill!!
effeinc Thanks Mike! Lindsay uses the treadmill fairly often :)
Wow, so much lumber! cool!
Matt, you have a serious wood fetish. Have you ever gotten rid of a piece of wood? Great video, thanks for sharing. Paul
pcorlis Hey Paul! I do. I really do. I have a fire every now and then to get rid of things too small to use. I don't really get rid of anything large lol
If your shop and my work in progress metal shop were neighbors we would be able to make some wicked projects, to bad that we are continents apart lol
Well done matt nice shop and thanks for the detailed tour, also take control on your wood issues :p
Ryan Degiorgio We would be unstoppable! Thank you! I think it's time for me to make some more cutting boards :)
"The start of what you'll see is a scrap problem". Lol!
What a nice set up Matt, it's no wonder you produce quality work pieces. I'm envious of the set up.
Great video, very in depth. Thanks for the tour!,
Thank you Paul! I've got some organizing to do and then I'll be even more productive!
Please will some American tell me how u get to the point of calling a surface planer a jointer? It really does not make any sense at all! It doesn't joint anything it planes :-/
I think the nomenclature come from the edge jointing operation. That's my only guess
Awesome shop... If I would live close to you, I'd sure stop buy for some of that wood ;-)
Robert Echten Thanks Robert. If you're ever in the area :)
I am not a wood worker, so it tok my brain a few minutes longer than I would like to admit why you would need a jointer and a planer.
Could you at some point make a work desk or a TV desk, where you show ways to hide wires, and maybe even have hidden sockets. biggest frustration for me is to see cables every where, makes me want to come over and clean up your ceiling its a mess :)
i got a question. your cv06 dust separator, how good would it work if i hard pipe it to table saw and wood lathe?
The separator would work fine. How well it would work would depend on the vacuum you have hooked up to it and a lot of that would depend on how long the runs are. I think if you keep them under 10' it would work well with a standard shop vac. Thanks Wayne!
Man, you have all the toys and a 2-car garage to keep it all. But, damn, that is one messy workshop.
