I'm impressed. Think I better get glasses. I can barely see a 100yd target and do good to hit at 75 with my eyes and open sites. 250 with a flint and open sites is incredible.
Most people have no idea how far 250 yards is especially with iron sights.. that's a long shot !!!! 300 yards with my high-powered 280 deer rifle with a 3 by 9 Redfield 5 Star scope on it is a super long shot for me
You are one hell of a shot . But that’s what happens when you shoot a lot . And have a place to do it . I’m impressed as hell . I had 28 years of military shooting, but I’m rusty as hell . I am almost finished with a new .45 cal flint southern mountain rifle and I got to find a range to shoot it .
What a super interesting video with Lovely firearms! Beautiful setting too! When we think of our Revolution almost 250 years ago, it brings to light the accuracy of a good rifle and shooter. Thanks Much and Many Blessings to You and your Family Mike! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
I'm catching up on some of these older videos. Mike sure makes these things look easy. One of the best BP shooters on RUclips. Between him and CapandBall, you can't go wrong.
Smacking an 11 inch target at 250 yards... In 1815, I can't imagine how impressive such a feat must have been! Good shooting! I can well understand how annoyed that made the British down in New Orleans.
Looking forward to coming out this year I've been teaching my close friend how to operate and maintain his pedersoli. I want to introduce him to the rendezvous way and what it's all about hoping I see other members of the primitive outdoorsmen group I joined being the other meets earlier this year faced cancelation. Mike I have been a long time viewer of your content and have just watched in awe of your expertise with antique arms much of what I've learned I've picked up from older guys who care about furthering these traditions to future generations. Thank you for all the hard work you do for our community.
Nice shooting! I am glad you made a video of that. Until I shot mine, I never realized how accurate a patched round ball was. It was great for you to show how a good marksman handles a rifle, whether in 2019 or in 1776. Keep them coming!
Cool to figure that out with help from friends. Interesting to note that if it had been a British soldier, you still would have hit him with the previous "misses". Seems like that!
"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! I greatly admire your gun & shooting ability! YA!! My only "claim to fame" was when I was 33 years old with the Joliet Muzzleloaders in Illinois about 1973 when I lived in Chicago. My rifle was a .58 custom made Hawken by Andy Fautheree in 1968. Don't remember the powder charge. 5 shots offhand at 100yds. Total group of 5 was 6 1/2"; 4 of the 5 were grouped in 2 5/8"!!! Score was 40 of 50. For me that was "Divine providence" as I was never a very good shot! My caplock Hawken was a very beautiful curly maple stock & gorgeous browned barrel with a heavy (1 1/8") Bill Large barrel & Al Osterman lock. At 80 years old now, I still have that rifle in near mint condition!!! I'd love to carry it with me in my coffin! "Gesundheit"!!!!!
Damn fine shooting! Find a worthy young man for the next owner of your treasured rifles. Then both you and the rifles will have the only real eternal life.
Off-hand shooting really isn't that difficult, but the further the target is from the shooter, the more important it becomes to really lock that supporting arm in tight to the body to provide a stable rest for the rifle. That's how the 2nd shooter was able to hit the gong on his first attempt, so you can see how tightly he held the supporting arm against the body. The rifle barrel barely moved.
Good shooting. A few years ago we where trying the same thing buy shooting shotguns and using 12 gauge slugs. I hit the gong on my 3rd try. I haven't tried it with any of my muzzleloaders but will be doing some shooting when winter is over. Thanks for sharing
I know this is an older video, but I'm impressed by the left handed gun and right handed shooting of Mike. I often find some really nice rifles but I'm left handed. Anyone have input on this? I've built a few of my own, but sometimes I want other peoples.
Fine shooting. I'd never seen a swivel breach flintlock until this video. Definitely a cool setup. Also, pretty amazing trajectory for a .54cal. I would've thought the hold over would have been much more.
I've been using Graf powder for the last 5 or 6 years. My primary complaint is that it seems to fowl the bore more than others I've used. Keep in mind I was still using Dupont until I purchased this from Graf. The old stash eventually ran out. I had paid $4 a pound in the '80's for Dupont, so I was alarmed at the current prices. Graf was a lot cheaper than the others AND it's made in Germany, so I stocked up on it. But, loading is harder than it used to be.
I was quite wrong about Graf Black Powder. After watching Mikes video about having fowling problems with a certain rifle and curing the problem by polishing the bore...I gave it a shot. That bore was still easy to load after 12 shots. It might have taken an hour, altogether. Best thing I could have done.
Great job by all! Open sights no optics other than your corrective lenses? Sure would want to be on 5e opposing side in a lead slinging contest against you and your fellow long Hunters! Great job and thanks for documenting for us! I recently purchased a 42 1/4” barrel long Pennsylvania mule ear lock rifle in .50 bore, going to see how far out I can reach consistently.
if some random guy at work, or walmart told me that he hit a gong at 250 yards with a flintlock, i wouldnt believe it. i seen this, and i still cant believe it

I watched a video about 3 days ago "proving" that a flintlock rifle only marginally out shoot a musket. I knew better and you just proved better.
Freestanding with a flintlock, 250 yards! Stunning, I don,t care how many shots it took to achieve, it had to be seen to be believed!
@Garret Phegley he never said it was a musket he said a flintlock. which is correct. so i dont get your point
@Garret Phegley no you’re just being an autistic manchild. Plz seclude yourself from society.
I'm impressed. Think I better get glasses. I can barely see a 100yd target and do good to hit at 75 with my eyes and open sites. 250 with a flint and open sites is incredible.
Good shootin'. I see guys at the range with a modern rifle, sitting at a bench, rifle bagged and miss. Off-hand with a flintlock isn't easy.
Rich StoneHe was using his .45 caliber rifle.
Shows a great understanding of a man's gun. A round ball hit at 250 yards off-hand is very impressive.

People underestimate how accurate flinters are. We use to shoot caps of plastic side bottles at 50 yards when we were ready into shooting them

.54 caliber, with the right barrel twist and correct powder charge cannot be matched. Good shooting.....
Wow, that’s some good shooting!!!
A hit on anything at 250 yds. is admirable! Period-correct sights on a .54 caliber flintlock? You guys rock! Pun intended and admiration glowing
What a beautiful rifle ! You should do a hunting video with a musket
This is part of what Keep and Bear arms is all about. This sort of marksmanship should never be allowed to die, in the United States.
Excellent shooting!
Nice shooting!!
This gentleman make me feel calm when I watch his videos
Super shooting/great gun! Great video!
Amazing Mike
At my age I couldn’t even see it, great shooting
You have the best job in the world! Shooting black powder rifles and sidearms an getting paid for it. Very envious. Thank you.
That was some pretty fantastic shooting! You Pennsylvania guys! No wonder we won the Revolutionary War!
Good Shooting!
That's what shooting is a is about great friends, great guns and great scenery. And a great vid Mike!

It is a rifle. Both barrels are .54 caliber, rifled one turn in 72 inches.
