Oh amazing! Bireli Lagrene playing the bass part like he’s just been hit by lightning! Pastorius lines can do that to you…he was quite possibly an alien popped in to up the human game within terms we might understand!

I will add, Mick Karn wasn’t a great slapper and although he claimed not to listen to Pastorius much because he feared what it might do to him, they have such similar lovely lines whilst being totally unique. Jaco Pastorius and Mick Karn will set you up for a lifetime of study and joy if bass is your game.

I’m sure I’m not insulting Bireli Lagrene to say, it’s great, it really is, but it’s not Jaco Pastorius! There’s something deep in the swing of this piece, very deep, that only Pastorius could go that low without once slapping. He very rarely slapped. To make this jump like he does without even hinting at a slap is why he is worshipped.

This is superb bass playing. But it STILL isn’t Jaco Pastorius! He was that good.
