  • May 20 -- Tonight David Letterman hosts "The Late Show" for his last time. It will be his 6,028th show, and he promises "lots of surprises." CBS hired Letterman away from NBC in 1992, and a year later, the Ed Sullivan Theater became his professional home. Bloomberg's David Gura reports.

    They almost didn't do it. When they first looked at the building, Dave and the producers almost walked out immediately because it had fallen into such terrible disrepair, and the control room reduced the seating capacity significantly.
    But director Hal Gurnee had a vision of what the theater COULD be instead of what it was, and the rest was history. They turned that place completely around -- including relocating the control room -- in a mere six months.

    Did it retain the name Ed Sullivan Theater after the CBS lease ran out until they bought it years later? I'm guessing yes but have no idea. A bit harder to search for.

    I understand that DL lived in California but taped his show in NYC. What a hassle that commute must have been!
