Should tourists still travel to Hawaii after the wildfires in Maui?

  • Officials in Hawaii urged tourists to stay away after wildfires killed over 100 people in Maui. But as the island begins to feel the economic impacts, they’re now being encouraged to return. The tourism industry makes up a quarter of Hawaii’s economy, with more than 10 million visitors in 2019 compared to the state’s 1.4 million residents. In #Maui alone, tourists spend about $5.4 billion each year. Hawaii Governor Josh Green said the island’s economy could collapse, calling the lack of visitors “potentially catastrophic.” Tourists are being told to stay out of West Maui, where many locals are still recovering from the disaster.

Yes, it’s obvious to the world that Hawaii state, county, and local government officials are severely lacking in knowledge, skills, and abilities to handle this crisis‼️Even with offers from nonprofits, they are slow to respond such that local folks from churches and businesses are taking care of Maui❣️

As someone who lives on Maui and works in the tourism industry (session/wedding photographer), most of us are incredibly grateful for tourists visiting (and spending local, no chains if can!). We’ve always asked for those visiting to be respectful, some people treat the whole island and it’s inhabitants like it’s Disneyland or something. At the end of the day though, there’s always kind and unkind people wherever you go. Most of the tourists I’ve met over the years have been delightful. We’re all tourists at some point if you enjoy traveling. So please come visit Maui! Most of us will be grateful for the support. Please leave Lahaina alone.

Their land is scorched so no natural resources. Biden is not sending anymore aid. They will be forced to leave and go where the jobs are, or stay and starve to death. Tourism is the only thing that will keep their economy running. The democrats want to buy that land, they blocked off the roads. They need them to leave and they will do so by starving them out.

It doesnt benefit our economy greatly in fact it harms our citizens more to try to keep up with housing increase while being a top destination of the world. And were talking indigenous farming families who have worked their whole lives and deserve more than a lot of us to be able to afford their home. All the money made off of tourist goes to mainland airlines, mainland hotel brands, mainland designers. The original commenter is not suggesting the people who lost their homes should be making videos welcoming tourists back, but the businesspeople elsewhere on the island who are the backbone of the economy probably should. Classic example of a strawman argument in the replies to the original comment.
Tourists should stay away from the affected areas obviously, but if tourusts don't visit altogether their economy will collapse and they'll be in even deeper 💩
That doesn't help anyone and slows down the recovery process even more.
On a related note, the government really should be doing a lot more to temporarily rehouse people and help them rebuild their homes... isn't that the least they could do with all their taxpayer dollars?

Do what you can to help, bring local currency to give out to little kids when you see them, help out local vendors. It’s only insensitive if you don’t do what you can to help when you will literally be in a place to help. Take your trip, educate yourself and your family on how lucky people in mainland America are, and make sure to TRY AND TALK TO LOCALS AND TAKE PART IN/RESPECT THEIR CULTURE. Hawaiians hate tourists that put on lays and drink from coconuts in five star hotels and turn a blind eye while they literally walk around poverty without trying to learn or help. If you genuinely are concerned about what’s going on, take this opportunity to learn about what’s going on in another place and find out what we can actually do to help.

I spent a week in kaanapali at a resort the first week they opened back up. It was very difficult as some of the locals were not happy that we were there and the other half were very grateful to see us. It's a very real situation of being stuck between a rock and a hard place. I spoke with two representatives from FEMA who were outside of a supermarket. They informed me that the funds are there to rebuild Lahaina but the process is going to take a long long time. One of the issues they discussed was that of getting a hold of property owners. Apparently some are very difficult to get a hold of and they cannot go into their property area unless they have the property owners consent. This also keeps them from getting to other neighboring sites as they have to have all property owners consent to start working on and decontaminating certain sections. I feel for the locals of Maui. Their culture and their people is unlike any other in the world and they are wonderful people. Much respect to the locals and all that they've lost.

Well you shouldn’t have treated your tourists customers like trash.

I think it comes down to a defining verdict, and that’s rather the tourists decide to help via donations, and just buying things from local businesses and not just Maui but just the surrounding areas to contribute to the rebuilding of Maui. I can tell you personally that I am not from there, I was born and raised in California, but it hit me deep when I saw that Maui was on fire because it’s always been my dream place to go and it still is and now I haven’t even better reason to go there because I would be going there too be helping hand. I completely understand that everybody’s on the fence about everything that unfolded it is truly truly unfortunate and Even saying that is an understatement.

Conflicting information is keeping me away and I’m sure others as well. I had wanted to go in October 2023 but I canceled because of the fires. I’ve seen islanders making videos trying to shame or cancel tourists for going there and enjoying themselves at the beach. I also see videos like this where they talk about needing tourists to stay afloat and pay the bills. The mixed messages make it hard to decide if vacationing there is ok. I will probably still stay away and try back in another year or two from now.

Not our job, be careful what you ask for! You just might get it. There's a reason for that saying. This is their problem. Don't pretend for a second you're going to go visit. You just like to talk trash. Seriously, don't even say it unless your there wasting your own money like it's going to do anything for these people.

@nathanangerson8595 I do not see how donating money to help people suffering from a terrible tragedy is a waste of money. Thankfully I believe most people do not think like you

90% of the non Hawaiian people don't care about Maui problems, and the other 10% are happy they have them. Sad but true. Maui is a very expensive vacation destination. It just got more expensive on the other side of the island by Four Seasons. What happened in Lahaina is a complete disaster and heart breaking situation. I am saddened deeply by the loss of life, family and the homes of those who were born and raised in Lahaina. I am actually selling items on ebay and sending 100% of proceeds to Maui support. Government help is on the way as well as private support. Please be patient and stop disrespecting tourist like they are the problem. You have made a nice living off the very people you are disrespecting. Tourists are not to blame for your sorrow and loss. You will need to have ability to rape them again one day.
