I own a Rockstead Shin in ZDP clad.
I thought it was a lot of money for a knife until I opened the box and realized I had just purchased a light sabre.
I purchased the Chi and was completely awestruck when I first handled it. It’s truly a work of art and engineering precision. It’s a slippery slope; one month later I bought the Higo II in ironwood, and it was more of the same. They’re at a level of sharpness and durability that far exceeds any other top-end knives I own (CRKs, Shiros, Arius, Paysan, etc). These are two I won’t be parting with, and am considering the Ryo next. I know they’re expensive, but there are very good reasons why. Incredible. Thanks for your content!

I would be scared to use it if you can’t sharpen it.
@@jackchueh1231 There’s two compelling reasons not to be too concerned about sharpening: 1. They stay sharp with regular (non-abusive) use, and can be restored easily by stropping; and 2). Should the blade actually need to be restored, Rockstead will do it under warranty- you need only pay for postage to Japan. It’s a good deal.

It's the 2nd Rockstead I have seen (the first was that giveaway by Neeves) and both are works of art.

That’s great. Which GS do you have? I’ve not yet gone into GS but there are a couple I like.
I have a Koi as well. I want to carry it, but I tried to remove the part where the clip goes, no luck. Any suggestions?

I went with the MBK Slayback to sate my ZDP-189 desires in a way that wouldn’t make me feel guilty or nervous using it. I still love the look of many Rocksteads and may simply have to get my wife to engrave some scales for me.

I’m half Japanese and I need this. That’s MY excuse. I’m Japanese and love knives … it’s a must. But that’s RIIIIIGHT after we get a nice trip over to begg’s!!! I’m ready for it. I’ll get a good weekend for us and see when you’re free Dirk. This knife is outstanding man. The engraving, the model in its design, and the fact that it’s a rockstead is a great reason to have any ounce of pride of ownership and fun. That slow roll looks very elegant and I wouldn’t be able to stop rolling it while watching a good show lol. That is one stellar piece and think you have added a perfect piece to round out the collection. Stellar gent’s carry. Ugh. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I’m a big fan of Rockstead knives and own 2, a Higo II and a Hizen. Both are EDC users. I’ll not be rude and link my videos, but I’ve made a few, including a two years of use and recently a repost to someone who said that when I said I used them, I was either a billionaire or a liar. I’m neither, but I made a video of stripping down the Higo to show how gunky it was inside. These are such great knives to cut with, so why not? The original purchaser only, non-transferable warranty makes them terrible investments, but great users.
The Koi engraving is beautiful, by the way!

That is a really beautiful knife! I really like Rockstead knives. I’ve wanted one for a long time. Rockstead would be a grail knife for me.
But they are extremely expensive for production knives. If I can bring myself to buy one, and a Todd Begg Norseman Bodega my collection will be complete. Really looking forward to your interview with Jim Skelton. I would love to know how many knives are in his collection lol. Thank you for sharing an awesome knife.

hey dirk .... rockstead knives all of them imo are stunning and owning one is a pleasure. i can feel the corners of my mouth rising when i open mine. i was a little surprised you didn't like the higo but hey we are all different. the box is made from paulownia wood , thanks for sharing , ian uk. 👊👊

@@DirkWerning no worries dirk. out of interest how many knives do you own ? i have 35 and that's too many for me but hard to narrow it down, especially as i have two of some 🤣🤣i don't think slip joints appeal to you guys in the us why would they BUT the spyderco pits in m390 is very nice and mike reads pits mk 5 😉😉

Excellent review and thank you very much for taking the time and sharing your thoughts. Stunning looking knife but as you say, may be a better display.
Someone else said this, but Rocksteads are slippery slopes. It's very cliche but pictures/videos really don't do them justice. I snagged a Hizen (basically a small version of the higo) for a really good price on a whim to see what they hype was about, and I fully expected to resell it. As soon as I got it out of the box I knew I was in trouble, and that I would be buying more. I've owned everything from the cheapest gas station knife up to full blown handmade customs, and I have to say that Rocksteads are truly the best of the best in the world of quality and attention to detail. Not for everyone with how they look, but if you're a knife person you should try to handle one at least at some point because the craftsmanship will blow you away.
Absolutely agree they are a must handle at a minimum.

It wouldn’t cost much to print a nice authenticity card , the label looks like it’s come off a tin of noodles!!!

Turns out in an attempt to save money I spent 300 on probably the most expensive neck knife in the world 🤦
Bandaid on your finger made me chuckle and think it would be funny if your hands and fingers were all bandaged up as a gag for the knife channel.

It’s too bad this would be a display knife. I own the SHU, Hizen, and the KEI. These are harder than a file. Do not coddle them, but put them to the test which they were designed for. If you are collecting this knife to preserve for the next owner, think about that strategy for a minute.
Use these knives hard. A simple stropping will keep this knife sharp for a very long time. You may never have to send it to Japan - ever.

Could you share or check your other sources for knives please, everywhere in my bookmarks is out of stock on the shin in dlc and I'll have money to get one finally next month, I've already had money before but couldn't find one then either. Really want me a shin. Nothing worse than having the money for your rockstead and not finding it anywhere.
They are hard to find for sure and sell quickly when they do.

Try knife center. They usually have a good selection. I have two rocksteads from them.

they could have branded it somewhere else.. that "made in japan" is so proud, its kinda tacky and ruins the attention to the engraving
