John you’re wasted mate you have such a good way of getting this theory across.
I’m 65 playing guitar for years and its only now that I’ve had these things explained in a way that I can understand.
Okay I may have to go over it a few times but it’s going in
THANKS. By the way that HB black cherry prs tribute is absolutely brilliant, Roswell pickups really well finished and set up, slightly out in intonation but 20 to 25 mins and it’s now spot on.
    Thanks again Wayne T

I enjoyed illustrating your 5 points which are 5 theory aspects. There is a huge number of famous guitarists who never arrived to your 5 points. They cant read or write music, but when they hear smth, they can just play it. Lets just say that music is more than that. Music for me starts with rhythm. point 1. The ability to hear notes and chords, finding the root of a song, point 2. Master your barres, point 3. Play what you hear in your head, point 4. Finding the chords of a song by hearing them. point 5.

    Greetings from Saltburn
i learned the hard way back in the earl to mid 70s...playing along with the radio in the 70s...radio 2 usually.....many different styles on there....by the time punk came along i could already play most things by ear....punk seemed simplisitic to me...but great
soon figured out hows and whys....rhythms...what notes went with chords and why...and mood of the song..but was always in the dark with scales...still dont know em...but play in many styles and keys...from flamenco to punk.
the way you explained it...in good borospeak makes it simple ...cheers marra

Hello John, thanks for this clear and understandable lesson about fundamentals of music. I reviewd this vid when you published it, and few months later, I return to it. Transfering this knowledge into my brain takes lot of work and practice. Making a use of it is another step. Did you notice how fast the time passes ? Thanks again 👍

Cracking lesson...I recall the first proper guitar lesson i had..play me a major scale he said...so i did..that's a minor scale he said...DOH..!! Because i hadn't got the Major/minor third bit..or the formula quite right..
Circle of 4ths/5ths..baffled me..until it was explained much as you have..Chords i think of in 3rds..same thing just easier for me. Modes..some find that confusing..it's not if its' explained properly. If i had to only know one bit of music theory..it would be intervals..because i'd have to know the chromatic scale and how to build scales..intervals..
The Pythagorus bit is good because..and i can't remember where i heard this..Music is mathematical..we think in numbers like 4ths..5ths etc..roots..Degrees of a scale..So music is the sound of maths...
I think music theory to many people is scary..too difficult..it is maths and many ain't good at that...But the basics aren't rocket science..Christ if i can get it anyone can..

The relative minor to major scale thing is quite an important thing, especially in lead guitar work. It is quite a trick to know which scale form - major pentatonic or ( it's relative ) minor pentatonic 'sounds' right for that song. Tonality is the key word here. The circle of 4ths you explained and made very clear. Good stuff John R. Next video please!

I'm pretty sure I've just found my favourite guitar tutor & I've only been playing
my Maton CW80/12, Fender Lead I 1981, Ibanez RG with EMG81n & EMG85b buckers, Marshall & Blackstar amps (my most recent additions) for 43 years, I'm 51 nowadays.
Many thanks Mr. John Robson mate, ya bloods worth bottlin'.
Your dead-set rippers of videos all things guitar related are the bees knees
the lizards gizzards the ducks nuts, fair-dinkum, they're flamin' grouse.
Too much rock n'roll is grossly inadequate woefully insufficient & nowhere near enough.
Peace respect & be nice to ya old chook!

Nevertheless this is a great wrap up sumary of elementary guitar theory. Great job!

    Very informative.

  • @brunoCondor

Thanks John, this is very usefull and well explained. Especialy why some people talk about the circle of fifths, wich we all heared off i guess. But i wasn"t aware about the circle off fourths and that can be very confusing in what's the difference, because some people refer to it as the exact same thing. Recently i started to learn theory, after 35 years of playing, and i thought, i'll start with learning the notes on the fretboard, followed by minor and major scales, then pentatonic, natural and harmonic related scales all over the fretboard extended, and that would bring me really far, along with this knowledge you teach in this vid. BUT.. a few days ago i found a guitar course by Tom Morello ( Rage against the machine ), and he explains 7 box types of minor and major pentatonic, instead off 5 ?? And it makes sense. And he even shows for both minor and major scale a note box, by shifting every time 1 fret, and you never can't go wrong ? Now my biggest fear is to learn something wrong, and i trust you in every way. It's better to stay with one good teacher. But i'm really eager to know what's that all about and should want to hear some input about that from your side, if that's not to much asked ? So, i will send you that short video trough mail, and hope for some input. Thanks again John ! Greets, Bruno. EDIT.. I just did send that lesson file from 15 min to your email with We Transfer.

Musical theory was a mystery to me until recently when I learnt a sharp or a flat was the same note just a different name depending on how you looked at it. Music lessons were such a waste of time. Did not learn any of this? Hope music lessons are better these days.
